Space Mountain

Hi all.....my DS is a very tall 5 year old (turning 5 the day we arrive in WDW) which means he meets the height requirement to ride Space Mountain but I am not so sure I should let him. My concern is that he will have to sit by himself and I can't be right next to him to help hold him. I remember the days when you used to sit on somewhat of a middle bench with your child between your legs and you could hold on to them (that is how I used to ride when I was a kid with my parents). Anyway, how old were your kids when you first let them ride SP the way the seating is now?

My DD, now 6, rode SM when she was five. She loved it but she is a major ride junkie, with ToT and RnRC tying for her favorites. When she rode, I leaned forward and kept my hand on her shoulder. That is until she removed my hand and kept yelling, "I'm fine!". Good luck!

my DD was 6 (she's 20 now).....she enjoyed it...
DS on the other hand didn't ride it until much later....his early teens i think....he was very scared of everything.....but now HE (at 17) is the major coaster junkie....

Thanks for the replys......I am so undecided, he loves Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad but I am just not sure about Space Mountain because he can't grab onto me if he is a bit scared especially being in the dark. He is tall enough but is he mentally ready for it??

there is nothing wrong with being apprehensive... not scared...

space mountain is scary but fun. i dragged my lil cousin on there when she was 6. she flipped out on me and sed that if i ever made her go on that again she would rip my eyes out. but, before i did that, she would only go on like dumbo. if hes an adventurous lil guy, then i think he may like it.

Both of my dks rode Space Mountain at 5 or 6 and really liked it and have ridden it since!

My son was around 5 when he first rode. I sat in front, he sat in the middle and my husband sat behind him. He was able to reach up and touch his shoulder every so often to make sure he was okay.
