hey i need some help. i dont remember why but last time i went to wdw i didn't go on space mountain. this time i really want to get on but need some help. i know its probably not that bad but i want to make sure i can handle it. i can do big thunder mountain, test track, soarin, tower of terror, and can probably handle everest. i WILL NOT do RNR because it goes upside down. i know space mountain isnt that bad but im just wondering your opinions. i know the top speed is like 30 mph but what is the biggest drop? also if someone can try to tell me what really happens in the dark part. any information would be helpful. thanks.

Honestly in my opinion Space Mountain is just like Big Thunder in the dark.
So if you can handle that, you'll be fine! :thumbsup2

I love SM! It really is like BTMR in the dark - it goes about the same speed. The only difference is that you can't see what's ahead of you because it's dark (which bothers some people and makes the ride seem scarier to them). I would give it a try if you like Thunder Mountain! SM is my favorite ride at MK.

The good thing about being in the dark is that you don't really know what's happening. I don't at least. If you can handle the others you mentioned I think you can handle SM. It's a cool ride. A little jerky, but not too scary IMO. I also need to tell you that I was terrified of RNRC because of the loops and refused to go on it. My DH felt the same. We could handle all the other rides, even managed ToT once, but the thought of RNRC scared us to death. But in 2004 I decided to ride, just wanting to live up to my fear. It was awesome! I didn't feel the loops because I was too busy singing 'Love in an Elevator'. So I ran out and told DH how much fun it was, which pumped him up so he rode it with me. You should try it!

I remember reading somewhere (I think it was TGM) that Space Mountain is actually SLOWER than BTMRR. Hard to believe because it certainly does seem to go faster with somewhat steeper drops and sharper turns. IMO, it is a more intense ride, but not by much. My 8-year-old has been riding it since she was 5 and she is not a fan of thrill rides.

SM isn't really that much of a thrill coaster. Like other posters mentioned, the darkness factor is really the only scare tactic (not much of one for me). One thing to note - as you make the giant climb up the hill, normally you'd expect it to drop you down when it reaches the top, but SM doesn't have a big drop at the top. It only has one significant drop and it's not really that much of one - no more so than BTMRR in my opinion. It's fairly tame for a coaster, and it's been my DD6's favorite ride since she was tall enough to go on. Again - I don't know the exact drop footage of that one drop, but it's pretty quick, so it can't be that much. If you like BTMRR and you don't mind the dark (It's not completely dark - you can see other coasters after your eyes adjust), I think you'll love it! Go - and enjoy!! :cool1:

SM is more "fun" than scary or thrilling. I love it! If you can do ToT (which TERRIFIES me every time) you should be fine on SM. Have a great trip!

If you saw SM with the lights on most of you would never go on it and for surely not let your kids on it .

It looks like just a twisted bunch of metal.

Now with that being said it really is not as bad as the others Btmrr and no where steeper then splash.

It's basically a WILD MOUSE type ride in the dark.

I agree with a few of the above posters, in that it's like BTMR in the dark. Because of the thrill of being in the dark (other than the fantastic ceiling!!!) and not being able to see what's ahead, the intensity factor is kicked up a few notches from BTMR. You don't get the hyper butterflies in your stomach like you would on Splash Mtn., but there are definitely some hairpin turns.

Oh yeah! If you do choose to ride (which you really should because it's a very good ride IMHO), don't forget to turn and wave to the people going past you on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority during your ascent! It's positively priceless when they wave back. :wave2:

thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts and just to let you know i think i WILL ride it. the only bad news is i gotta wait until august to get on but hey im going for 2 WEEKS why should i complain. lol any other information would be helpful though because im trying to get my dad to ride it with me.

thanks

Actually, the "dark" isn't even all that dark...

IMO it is a LOT darker on Space Mountain in Disneyland... and longer... and better... with music...

I have ridden SM several times and absolutely love it. Yes, its a little jerky but if you scream through the whole ride it makes it more fun. And, by the way....this year while riding SM for the second time with my DS and DD I caught a glimpse of this ride just at at that perfect moment when you catch some light as you are just approaching what I call the first "hill" and I saw all that twisted metal and that was the first time I actually felt like "what the heck am I doing on this heap of crap". I still screamed through the whole thing and had a blast but that image still sticks in my head. Won't stop me from riding it again though !! Love it.

I didn't like SM only because it was so jerky. I believe one side is more jerky then the other, I can't remember which one is. Other then that, it's a simple ride. My 6 year old LOVED it.

As for any ride, get fast passes instead of waiting for an hour for the ride. Both you and your father will enjoy it a lot more after that. I've been riding SM since I was about 10, and I've always loved the ride. And it's quieter than Thunder Mtn., which I see as a big bonus.

If you sit up front you can almost see where the coaster is going to go. I like to know what's going to happen - aka be in control. That why I'm not sure I can do TOT. SM is fun and you will enjoy it.

What's the height requirement on Space Mountain? I was surprised to hear of 5 and 6 year olds riding.

I would actually suggest to sit in the last seat available (I think it is 6), you can actually see the first car (seats1-3) and where it is going up and down. To be honest, I was disppointed after riding it, expecting more. i am going to try the front next trip to see if it makes it any more "thrill"ing
I think from the other rides mentioned, you should be more then ok.
Have fun!

BTW, the height req is 44"

RNRC is rock n roller coaster starring aurosmith. its a dark and fast roller coaster at MGM Studios. its the ride with the big guitar in the front next to tower of terror. most people say its scary (and i will NEVER ride it) because it is dark fast and has loops.

Huh, well then it sounds just like Space Mountain in Paris France! (I've been there). That was a good Space Mountain. Probably the best of all the Disney parks. (But I know nothing about the Tokyo SM so....)
