Space Mountain questions.

Hello, Space Mountain used to be my FAVORITE ride as a teen/when I was younger. I won't say how old I am now.lol I remember the seating being that you could almost/kind of hold on to the person in front of you behind you or didn't they have it where two people could seat together? The last time I rode it a few years ago, I felt it was very different and did not like it. I am a smaller person and felt very unsecure and even with the lap restraint I moved/slid around way too much for my liking. Each seat was then individual. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

Has anything changed with the seating arrangements/restraints? Thank you!

At Disneyland it's a 2 sitting next to each other


At Disney World it's 3 front/back


The restraints are different between the two. I find that I cannot ride Space Mountain at WDW any more. I don't feel secure (like you mentioned) but it's also motion sickness gets to me. When we went to DLR in 2019 I decided to try it out there and I loved it, I didn't get really motion sick for the most part and I noticed I felt so much more secure, the side to side arrangement is likely the biggest contributor to me feeling that way and I was seated more like normal at DLR.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I feel like I am not the only one! My hope is someday they will reconstruct the cars like Disneyland. I most likely will never make to Disneyland but I am lucky I only live a few hours from WDW.

That was basically the same seating configuration that existed on the Matterhorn bobsleds up to maybe a decade ago.

Eta: yup… change happened in 2012 from cars that could hold up to 6 people per bobsled (x2 connected bobsleds, for total of 12 passengers per ride vehicle) to cars that can hold 3 per bobsled (or 6 per vehicle). The original bobsleds had two seats, which could accommodate up to 3 persons each. One seatbelt encircled all three passengers at once. Riders were directed to load largest passenger first with next smallest seated ahead of them and the smallest taking the front position. I always thought of it as sitting in each other’s lap. As far as I remember, no one was ever seated with anyone that wasn’t in their party. So sometimes only one or two would be in a seat designed to hold 3.

Another quick bit of Matterhorn trivia. Until the change in the bobsleds, there was no height requirement… instead it had an age restriction: “must be 3 years of age or older to ride.”

I never knew the WDW Space Mtn seats were the same or similar to the Matterhorn ones. Learn something new everyday.

Having ridden Matterhorn I'm glad it's the current design it's rough as is i don't think we would have enjoyed it the original way. Really interesting to find out these tidbits.
