souvenir sand

The first time I cruised, I gathered some shells on Castaway Cay (it was about 10 of the) and put them in a baggie and then put it in my beach bag. While boarding the ship a little girl in front of me had a cup (about the size of a soda cup) filled with seashells and they took it away from from at security, mine went through in my bag just fine. I felt really bad for the girl, but I guess not enough to give her one of my shells. I probably should have done that.

No, you shouldn't. You should have given up your shells to be returned to the beach.

I hope that now that you know you aren't supposed to take them, that you will do better in the future.

Since they have asked you not to, do you feel it is ok for you to take them?

Just to share a different idea...

When my sons were young, they loved looking for shells and bringing them home, but we were conflicted about whether this was good for the environment, plus most of the shells they found were small and broken and smelly...

So one time, before a beach trip we bought some nice shells from a store and scattered them on the beach just before our kids got into that part of the beach (there weren't many other people in that area). They LOVED finding so many large and pretty shells, and we didn't feel bad about taking them with us because, after all, we had brought them with us.

Of course, it leads to another dilemma, do you let your kids forever think they hit the jackpot, or do you fess up and risk them feeling deceived? In our case, we fessed up later that day, once the initial excitement had died down. They were fine with it. They had kinda figured that something was up because they never usually find so many shells. Anyway, it was a nice memory for our family.

P.S. I don't think sand would be a problem in small quantities. After all, as a PP said, plenty comes home unintentionally in peoples shoes, etc., and no one is worried about that depleting the beach.

Fantasy 1x per week 4000 people.
Dream 2 x per week 4000 people.
And some months:
Magic 1x per week 2000 people
Wonder 2 x per week 2000 people.
So a few shells or just a cup of sand adds up to a lot.

Another thread on why the rules don't apply to me....
They didn't check for shells.
There are lots of shells.
A little sand won't hurt.
My child is well behaved.
My child looks older.
There was no one else in the adult pool area.

Well, first of all I didn't see the notice about not taking any shells from the beach until after I returned to my stateroom and looked at the Navigator because I heard them talking to the little girl about why they were taking them away. I wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying, but I heard something about the Navigator and then I saw a little girl bawling her eyes out. I wasn't going to leave the ship to return them then. And it wasn't like I was trying to hide them.

I have been on other cruises and I have NOT since taken anything from the beach. So I guess I have done "a little better in the future". I guess we can't all be as perfect as you seem to be I guess you have never broken any rule because you know everything all the time right. It seems to me that you are getting some sort of thrill of being so sanctimonious and preaching at others. I suppose you think it okay to lecture people and demean them. Do you feel it is okay to feel superior to others? And why just pick on my post others have said that they brought back sand and you didn't feel the need to berate them. (This is all rhetorical, I really wouldn't care what you thought of me.) So perhaps you will do better and berate everyone on the future. Respond if you like, but I will not respond to this thread anymore.

I'm continually amazed when people that are called out about their behavior, they then go on the attack.

I don't know how you can possibly know what thrills me.

There are so many threads just on this first page of the DISboard about people deciding which rules apply to them.

I have a large collection of sands from all our vacations. We're taking our first disney cruise this march. How can I bring some sand home or is this strictly forbidden. I want to get some from Castaway Cay and Nassau.
To quote a recent Navigator:

  • Due to our commitment to the environment, we ask that seashells, coral and other natural treasures be left undisturbed at Disney Castaway Cay for all to enjoy.

As others have posted it should fall under 'natural treasures'. I assume it does, so I have never tried. Maybe someone here has had Disney confirm sand is OK? (they do haul it in from other places I hear, fwiw)

Just to add my 2 cents, I think the wording includes the sand and the flowers/plantings, along with the shells. These things are all natural. I treasure them and think the natural beauty of Castaway Cay is something very valuable, both to DCL and the passengers that visit.

If you need something to jog your memory of this beautiful place, take plenty of pictures.

It does not matter if it is a treasure or whatever, because it is definitely against the rules because they confiscated ours when we tried to get back on the ship with it. They told us you cannot take sand from the beach onto the ship. It was a small amount and they saw it in the xray machine. For those of you who insist on breaking the rules, maybe you will get away with it. But now that we know it is not allowed, we won't do it.
