Southwest & Ding Question

So, I already have my airfare booked with a Ding of $84 each way. Well, today a ding came up for $74. I didn't take it because my morning flight was not available but my evening flight was available at the $74 fare.

Would I have been able to just do my return flight? If so, can someone tell me how? Would I have to cancel out my original flight & rebook (and that's a big gamble that my original flight would be available at $84)? Can a Southwest Agent do that for me?

aarrggghhhh!!

I am not an expert but what I read about doing and did was to originally book all flight segments seperately for this reason. Now you know for next time, what you can do now I believe is call southwest and have them seperate the flights and then you cancel the flight you want a ding for and book it using your credit for the ding and get a credit for any remainder.
hope this is right and that it helps..
