I just did online check in for Southwest for tomorrow night. I was about a half hour after the 24 hour mark. We got B21 and B22. It is myself and my 6 year old son. We have flown Southwest several times and are very familiar with the way boarding works. I have always been able to check in right at the 24 hour mark and we have almost always gotten As. What do you think of these numbers? How will early bird check in affect when we board? Do you think there is a good chance we won't be able to sit together? I am kicking myself for forgetting and checking in late :(

You won't get to sit in the first few rows of the plane, but with those numbers, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting seats together.

You have already been impacted by early bird check-in. Those are the people that got the low A numbers.

Let's assume for the sake of argument that the number of business select passengers is low (3) and the the family boarding is about a dozen. That means you would be around the 81st and 82nd to board.

There are 23 rows, 137 seats. If EVERYONE that boarded before you sat in either an aisle or a window (or sat 2 in each 3 seat section), it would be IMPOSSIBLE for you NOT to have 2 seats left together! You would in theory have a "small" potential to not sit together after the 92nd person, but again that means no one has three people in a section.

We are a family of three and I have done the math for this one! If you have more than three, it is much more important to get an A.

Thank you for making me feel better. You have both said what I was thinking and hoping for as to how it will work out :)

If you don't happen to find two seats together (though I'm pretty sure you will), I think people will be pretty accommodating and will change seats so you can sit with your son. Or, look on the bright side, THEY can watch him during the flight while you relax.

We just flew on SWA a few days ago. On our outbound flight, I checked us in within a few seconds of the check-in window opening. We got A29-A31.

On our return flight, I forgot to check us in until about 5 hours after after the check-in window opened. We got B10-B12 for the first leg, and B27-B30 for the second. On both legs, all three of us got a row to ourselves, but it was near the back of the plane.

In any event, with such a small child traveling with you, I am sure that you would not have any trouble getting someone to move if necessary, even if you were the last ones on the plane. People have moved for us before, and that was just so that all three of us could sit together.

Update - We were supposed to fly out at 6:30 pm but our plane didn't leave until after 7:30. My son and I sat a little more than half way back; we had no trouble sitting together. They had announced it was a full flight so we chose the aisle and middle seats, figuring it would be easier if he had to get out to use the bathroom. Nobody ending up sitting with us. We had the three seats to ourselves which was nice later on in the flight because my son was able to lay down and sleep for over an hour and a half of the flight.
