My DH and myself are going to a big birthday party in FL. It is a joint bday for people turning 50 and 60, respectively. On the invite it states the attire is "Southern Casual elegant." Can anyone tell me what that is? Being from MA...I'm not too up on my southern casual elegant. Although, I do know WDW park attire. ;)

I've lived in Georgia all my life and I'd have no clue what "southern casual elegant" is. How random!

If I had to guess, maybe something you'd wear to an outdoor wedding in the afternoon...

:lmao: Wow, that's obscure. A knee length hoop skirt?

I've lived in SC all my life and have never heard that term. :confused3

Where is the party and what time?

Jacket and tie, or a suit for DH. Nice skirt or dress for you. Something between a denim skirt and a fancy cocktail dress (unless party is at night, then a cocktail dress may be appropriate). "Southern casual elegance" is like "dressy casual". Nicer than anything you would wear to WDW parks. What would you wear to dinner at California Grill or the restaurants in the Grand Floridian?

Hope this helps.

What a ridiculously unhelpful description! Who comes up with these things? :confused3

Just a little pretentious. I have lived my whole life in the south, my family has been in the south since the 1800s and I have never heard the term. But as previous posters have stated if it is afternoon I would wear a nice dress like you would wear to an afternoon wedding with heels. Men khaki pants and blazer or a suit. Even if it is at night I don't believe "southern casual elegance" calls for a cocktail dress.

So glad some people from the south hadn't heard of that either. Makes me feel like I am not so stupid after all.

The party is 5pm on a Saturday night. It is a catered dinner then maybe going to the beach?? Thinking a dress would probably work. I was originally going to wear capri's and a blouse so I'm glad I asked.

I wore a cocktail dress to the Cali Grill....ohhh....I think I will just wear that one again, then.

Thanks for all your replies!

I have no idea what that means but I would love to see the wide array of interpretations of "Southern Casual Elegance" when you get there!

I know some people where that would mean their best (i.e. least wrinkly) Hawaiian shirt and switching their beer from a plastic cup to a glass one ;). I never care what people wear but if you're going to put some sort of requirement on your party at least be specific! :)

That sounds so pretentious. I have definitely never heard of this phrase in Texas.

Southern girl here, that is the FUNNIEST thing I have heard in a while, next to Business Smart request I received once. Is there a Business Stupid dress I didn't know about ?

Someone is sounding a bit uppity to me.

It's what you wear while sitting on your veranda sipping mint juleps. :lmao:

I have lived south of the mason-dixon line for 15 years and have never heard of this expression.

This one had me spitting out coffee on my keyboard!

I would tune into the Golden Girls to see what Blanche was wearing. Then copy her attire:rotfl:

Thank you everyone! I really thought there was something wrong with me not knowing what that was. I feel so much better now.

I really have no idea what "southern casual elegant" is supposed to mean, but I just got a vision of ladies at the Kentucky Derby wearing huge outlandish hats.:rotfl2:

Made up
I don't think that is an official term in the handbook we all have;)

Never heard the term, but this is what immediately came to mind. This or the type of attire worn at "high-falutin'" horse races like the Kentucky Derby.
