Hollywood to Vegas

Woke and started packing almost immediately. No point hanging around especially when we have way too much luggage to pack (especially new footwear). The checkout queue is busy and Deb leaves it to me, which is a mistake as I don't have the patience to wait around. I get told off for that and rightly so given how badly Loews had cocked up the bill in San Diego. I had forgotten about that and so spend a good part of the journey wondering if the Roosevelt had also overcharged us. Of all the places we’ve been to I wouldn’t put it past them. The van is pretty much loaded when I join them and there isn't much space at all so it's lucky there is just the five of us this time as we'd have had to strap one of the kids to the roof if Charlotte had come along. No chance of that happening ever again apparently so there's no point dwelling on it. The weather is gorgeous today, brilliant sunshine and blue sky to send us on our way. The freeway is pretty clear but it still takes us a good hour to leave LA behind. I am sad to say goodbye now and would rather be heading to another beach today rather than heading back to the desert and the inevitable heat.

We turn north and head towards Barstow, which is the next real town and our planned destination for lunch. The change in landscape is as sudden as it is dramatic. The green hills give way to rocky slopes, dusty plains and scrub land. It’s not a place to break down or to be stranded unless you are in one of those horror movies I try my best to avoid. We are heading upwards nearly all the time and the straight roads only serve to highlight the heat haze that tells us things are warming up outside. The van is also feeling it especially on some of the longer inclines that stretch for miles at a time. I think about turning off the air con and opening the windows but then think better of it. If she really starts to struggle I will but until then I decide to take a chance and roll the dice. Given our destination I think it’s an appropriate response.

Barstow is in the middle of nowhere and the sudden sign of life provides welcome respite visually at least. We stop at the outlet centre (we do that a lot I know) as it also has a few restaurants dotted around it. I open the car door and feel the heat for the first time. It’s hot, make that Sunday lunchtime oven hot. The temperature must be over a hundred degrees here but as there is no real humidity I feel like I can cope with it better than I do in Florida. We all need to visit the restrooms and then split into two groups, boys and girls, again for a quick wander. Yes, I did buy something and yes it was foot related but I am saying nothing else. We simply had to have them as it completed Nick’s Angels outfit. I justify it further by swearing to Deb that they are the last pair of shoes I’m buying this holiday. Of course I had no idea of what was waiting for us in Vegas. Actually that’s not strictly true as Deb had already spotted a shop whose sign claimed that it was the world’s largest wide fitting shoe store. We didn’t have time to visit it the first couple of days we were there and at this moment in time I had completely forgotten about it or perhaps I was more concerned about getting my backside kicked by you know who. I’ll leave that for you to decide.

Food is a no brainer as it is the first opportunity we’ve had for a Taco Bell. The Chicken and Jalapeno wrap is fiery and doesn’t need the normally obligatory fire sauce. We head back to the freeway refreshed and ready for Vegas. Time passes quickly for me on this leg of the journey I don’t know why particularly. We saw our first ‘dust devil’ which looked like a little mini twister. In the distance we notice some dark clouds looming ominously above the mountains. I think it looks like rain and sure enough large drops start hitting the windscreen as we play cat and mouse with the storm all the way into Nevada. At one point near the town of Primm (home of Rickety Pete’s casino) I swear we are being chased by a tornado but nobody else believes me but then nobody else can see through the rear view mirror so how could they possibly know? From here the drive into Vegas feels very familiar and doesn’t take long. Has it really been 10 days? In one way it feels longer as we have done so much and been to so many different places but in another way it feels like we only left here a couple of days ago. It’s probably the sign of a good holiday but scant consolation as we are now on the downward slope so to speak.

We pull up at the front of Caesars Palace, unload our luggage, valet the car and make our way to check-in. Deb and Alexandra queue while I set up camp with Nicholas and Lucy around the hand luggage, which is not inconsiderable in itself. It takes ages for them to reach the front of the queue. I can’t remember if I go over and join them at the desk or Alexandra comes and gets me. Either way there appears to be a problem. According to Caesars booking computer we are not scheduled to arrive until tomorrow whereas our paperwork shows the correct booking date of today. The clerk says that he needs to confirm it with the local Virgin office as if he alters the booking and it turns out to be incorrect Virgin won’t pay. Apparently it has happened before which is nice to know. Typically Virgin is not answering the phone as their office closes at 4:30pm in Vegas, which I find unbelievable. He says the only thing they can do is charge us for two rooms tonight and then sort it out with Virgin in the morning. I should have asked to speak to a manager at this point but instead ask if they can at least upgrade us to make up for the inconvenience. He does but on reflection I wish I’d have kept my mouth shut.

The whole check in debacle has taken well over an hour and I am well and truly exhausted so we make our way to the rooms with a view to eating, bathing and sleeping tonight before taking on Vegas properly in the morning. The upgraded rooms are unnecessarily long but extremely well appointed. They are at the very end of the Augustus Tower, which overlooks the building site of the new extension to the hotel. Not the best view but it looks like everyone has finished working for the day so at least it is quiet. Tomorrow I don’t plan to spend much time in the room during the day so I don’t care how much noise they make. We order food from room service and the Chinese makes for a welcome change and is very tasty. The bed is very welcoming and it is not long before I am sound asleep.

I wake around 3am to the sound of banging, drilling and men shouting to one another. In other words the building site opposite is up and running nice and early. Deb is also awake and we are both finding it difficult to comprehend why the buggers would put us here. Again, on reflection I should have called down to reception and gotten a manager to come up and hear what was going on especially as they denied it later. Instead we fume and try our best to go back to sleep but it is impossible to do anything but doze for the next few hours. Consequently we both feel like crap when it’s time to get up but we are determined to get something sorted as there is no way we are going to spend the rest of our holiday in these rooms. Of course that means wasting more time and energy when we should be relaxing and having fun but we have no choice. I can’t believe that every single hotel we’ve visited has given us one problem or another. Is it us or are hotels and holiday companies going downhill? All I can say is that having traveled with Virgin almost exclusively the last 14 years I have definitely noticed a decline in service both by the holiday company and the airline. Sorry Mr Branson but you are definitely putting profit ahead of your customers.

Changing Rooms

We head downstairs to eat first before trying to sort things out. Caesar’s food court is in the middle of the casino but then so are most things I guess. The entrance to the Forum shops is off to the left of where we are sitting and the main theatre where Elton, Cher and Bette do their stuff is directly opposite. This weekend it is being used by Jerry Seinfeld and I would love to see him but I don’t think we will have the time and I don’t particularly want to leave the kids alone here. Breakfast is the usual affair and Nicholas is particularly pleased to find they serve it piled high in a croissant. We head into the Forum shops to find Planet Hollywood, which is where the daily Virgin welcome meeting takes place. Deb has her game face on and I wouldn’t want to be the rep who has to deal with us. The meeting is already taking place upstairs except that it is not much of a meeting really. Several couples are seated waiting for the solitary rep to make her way to each of their tables in turn. It could take forever and I don’t expect we’ll get very far so the decision is quickly made to head out to the Bellagio to see if we can get tickets for ‘O’ and maybe ‘Love” and sort out the problem with the rooms when we get back, as hopefully the lad who was checking us in yesterday is due to start work at 1pm.

We head over the bridge to the Bellagio to try and get Cirque tickets. Primarily we’d like to take the kids to see ‘O’ and as Lucy spent last term learning about the Beatles I thought that L.O.V.E. might be entertaining for her. The signs for the box office are either non-existent or confusing. I think we actually head for a restaurant rather than the theatre but get there eventually after doing a circuit of the Bellagio’s casino, which is one of the larger ones I’ve seen. One of the girls at the box office is announcing that there are no tickets available for this, that and the other and I start to panic that we will be out of luck. Instead we end up being out of pocket by the tune of two thousand dollars almost. For this we have tickets to Saturday’s early performance of ‘O’ and L.O.V.E. on Sunday. Plus we are also going to see Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo tonight. We’ve never seen a magician before and I read that his show is great for the kids and I am pretty sure they’ll enjoy it. As usual time has disappeared so we make our way back to Caesars and stop for a drink at the outdoor bar on the way. Luckily there is some shade and one of those mist machines that stands zero chance of keeping anything cool in this heat.

Whilst Deb queued again at the check-in desk I made my way back to the rooms with the kids as a number of them needed the toilet. Unfortunately neither of our keys work in either of the doors, so back down to the check-in desk to see if Deb has found the clerk who dealt with us yesterday and had faithfully promised to sort things out with Virgin as soon as he started work. Of course he’s already busy somewhere else and can’t come to see us and so we are passed on to a nice young lady who listens to our story. I end by asking her how she would feel having spent the amount we have and she immediately asks me if I want to speak to a manager. “Yes please,” we say in unison. The chap who comes out is quite young but listens to our story attentively and assures us that he will deal with Virgin and sort out the problem with the rooms so that we can get on with our holiday. Finally, I feel that someone is listening and has the power to sort things out. He intimates that he may be able to offer us something upgrade-wise for our inconvenience but makes no promises and says that he will call us soon with any news on our move to different rooms. We make our way back to the rooms and Deb has promised Lucy that she will take her down for a swim, she would spend the whole holiday like a shriveled prune if she had her way, so the rest of the family get their swimming togs on and make their way down. Unfortunately they are soon back as the entrance to the pool by our tower is closed and they would have had to walk all the way through the casino to get to the other entrance, which much to Lucy’s disgust they have decided not to do today as we have to start to get ready for the evening. Deb is in the bath when the phone rings. It’s the manager we spoke to who is calling to let us know that everything has been sorted and that he has arranged a room upgrade for us to a suite in the Centurion towers and it is ready for us now. I explain that we are going out to a show tonight and that we are in the middle of getting ready so he tells us to call the bell services when we are dressed and someone will come up and transfer us to the new accommodation. We dress quickly and get all of our luggage together and call reception. They send up a miserable old bugger who moans and groans about the weight of the luggage while I wonder how much of a tip we should give him for all his trouble. How the hell he got it all loaded onto one trolley is beyond me but he manages it and leads us off to our new home for the rest of the vacation. We follow him into the middle of the casino to a couple of lifts that provide access to the suites above. I forget which floor we are on but I do remember it was the one from the top (Deb: it was the 36th floor). He takes us down a short corridor to the last door on the left. My first thoughts on entering the room was “how are we ever going to go back to a normal hotel room again?” Immediately on our right is a toilet and next to that is a small kitchen area, which looks out over a living room which is large enough for a sofa and chairs and a dining table. This kids room is off to the left of this main area and is a typical adjoining room like the ones we’ve had at DVC in the past. The piece de resistance is the main bedroom and en suite, which is tastefully decorated and has a sofa at the end of the super king sized bed and forty two inch plasma on the wall. The best thing about this room though is the view, which provides us with a panoramic vista of the strip. The best thing about the en suite was the oversized bath or walk in shower room with its own seat and room enough for six or seven people. Easily as big as if not bigger than our kitchen at home (Deb: it was definitely bigger), I could happily stay here for months. Seriously, if I won the lottery this is what I’d do while our mansion is being built in Arizona.

We barely have time to drop our bags and take in the surroundings before its time to leave for the show. Although the Monte Carlo is only two hotels up that’s a long way in Vegas terms and in the current heat I don’t fancy sitting though the show in damp clothes. It probably takes longer for the car to arrive from the valet than it would if we’d have walked it but I am not bothered. Five minutes later we drop the car off at the Monte Carlo valet (I like valets) and head in to find the Lance Burton theatre, which is at the far end of the casino of course. Our seats are downstairs near the back but the view is ok. The show starts and I am relieved that I can see what is going on. I would like to be closer though because I can’t quite make out the detail on some of the costumes that his group of shapely assistants are wearing. Before you know it an usher comes over and asks me if we want to move towards the front and then leads us down to the third row on the opposite side of the theatre where we can really see everything although I still couldn’t tell you how he did any of the tricks. The reports about the show being kid friendly were spot on. He interacted with the kids in the audience a few times and got a load of them up on stage with him at one point. They all had their hands on a birdcage, which he then made disappear while their hands were still on it. Lucy was asked if she wanted to go up but declined. He even made one boy disappear and when he came back we could hear his parents asking him where he’d been. I don’t think he told them though, he just said ‘I don’t know’, I wonder how much they paid him to keep quiet. Like me Lance knows how to play the old switcheroo and even though I knew it was going to happen I still couldn’t see when or how he did it. Even the juggler who came on during the interval was funny and entertaining. All in all the show was brilliant and I would happily recommend it to anyone. As the woman at the Bellagio box office said earlier today it is one of the only shows in Vegas suitable for families and she wasn’t wrong. I’d definitely see it again.

We exit the theatre on a high. It’s been a good day and now our attention turns to food. Luckily the Monte Carlo has its own food court with the usual mix of burgers, pizzas, Subway, etc. We sit down to eat and enjoy reminiscing about what we have just seen. The drive back to Caesars is quick and we are soon back in the suite and happy to end the day on a high still not quite believing where we’ve ended up I think. I spend a good while just looking out of the window and watching the strip, which is mesmerising. Who’d have thought we’d get the chance to see it from a viewpoint like this? I go to bed incredibly relaxed and happy.

Mark,
I am amazed by your concluding remarks for this day and I applaud your ability to not let the many obstacles thrown in the way ruin your good time. Reading the report it seemed that it was an endless list of things going wrong--things taking longer than they should or not happening at all. Several times customer service was an outright oxymoron. The fabulous room you eventally got and the terrific show your family enjoyed must have gone a long way to redeem the day for you, but I'm sure there are many people who wouldn't have been able to enjoy those lovely outcomes for all the bitterness stewed up by earlier events in the day. You did well and deserved to be "relaxed and happy." Bravo.

what a stressful day !! im glad the upgrade did the trick...it sounds lovely

do you have any pics to share ?

Too many pics really... we're stil sorting thourh them all. Deb is currently setting up a blog with the report and pics as well so I will post a link when it is ready.

I trhink we were just 'relieved' to have it all sorted out.

The show sounds excellent. When we went in 1999 our DD was only 6 so too young for any of the shows (but MGM had an excellent kids club so we managed to see Tom Jones and another show, FX I think. so glad things worked out in the end. You definately do get spoilt with DVC accommodation, your view on such a high floor must have been amazing.
