Has anyone been to South Padre Island? We're thinking of taking a weekend trip there since they've got $60 one way airfare. :D I've never been before and would like to see the ocean. Could anyone give me advice or pointers on things to do or see? Thanks!!!

Never been, but hopefully someone else has :bounce:

I haven't been to South Padre in mumblemumblemumble years.

I remember it was a beautiful and fun place, though. Sorry I can't offer any info

We went a couple of years ago in August. Spent most of our time at the beach. My boys & DH rented waverunners for an hour. They had a blast. A couple of people in our group went horseback riding. We went to an arcade or two. Kids drove go-carts. The usual things you do at the beach.

I don't know how much there is to do this time of year. I know it's packed Spring Break with College kids.

South Padre is much nicer than Galvaston. Probabaly the nicest beaches in TX.

Hope this helps????

You might want to avoid South Padre during spring break. Its gets a bit wild around that time.

Galveston is the brown sand beach.

And the brown water beach. Yuck :p

Never been to South Padre but friends and family tell me it is a nice place to go.

The only time I went, the beaches were littered with medical waste from Mexico. I'm not in a hurry to ever go back.

I went a year and a half ago, and it was beautiful. We went horseback riding on the beach, and took something called the Dolphin cruise" We got to see pods of dolphins and their babies, plus the boat drags a net and they pull up sealife and put in an aquarium and explain what each creature is, what it eats, what it's function is. At the end, they turn all the animals loose. It was really cool.

We've been to South Padre Island MANY times-we live less than an hour from there. As a matter of fact, the airport you'll fly into (I know that Southwest is the one with the $60 special and they only fly to here, not Brownsville) is within walking distance of my house, and the airport land abuts the school where I work. Yes, avoid spring break time, which for SPI is the entire month of March-we have the Canadian school week, 8-15 is South Texas, 16-22 is most schools in North Texas. And avoid Easter weeks (the week before and after Easter)-it gets rather crazy out there then too. We have a little insert in our local paper about upcoming goings-on out there-feel free to PM me or Email me if you have any questions. Oh-unfortunately this area is very slim on Disney fans. It'll feel good to know there's going to be another one around (if you see a Toyota with a DVC liscence plate, be sure to honk!)

Ok that was TMI for me. ;) :D

Thanks for all the tips guys. We will definately avoid spring break!!!! And Easter weeks as well. We were thinking about the weekend after Memorial Weekend. My birthday falls on a Tuesday that week. I think it will be a nice getaway for us. (Crossing fingers) HOPEFULLY we'll be in a new house by then. And Simba's Mom, I'll be sure to wave to you when we go by your house. And I'm sure I'll be emailing you once the date gets a little bit closer. :D
