South Beach Dieters......... Unite

great advice from johde. I just wanted to say welcome. Do follow the food list and look at the receipes for phase 1 to see if anythign there interest you. It is hard the first two weeks, but you begin to feel great immediately. Again welcome and come back, we have lots of support to give:wave2:

Thanks for the kind words, Sheree and PrincessMichelle!

Welcome, Barb! You've already gotten great advice, and I don't have much to add, except that first off, you haven't blown anything at all -- you are definitely supposed to eat a snack between breakfast and lunch, and nuts are certainly allowed. The beauty of this way of eating is that you should never feel hungry -- if you're peckish, you should eat something (on program, of course!).

Also, while Phase 1 can be tough for some, it's also the time of the greatest results in the shortest time, which is immensely exciting and motivating.

Be sure to get your starting measurements as well as weight -- sometimes the scale doesn't register a loss, but the tape measure does.

I think you're wise to start after Thanksgiving -- holidays should be enjoyed, which is hard to do when you're figuring out a new eating plan.

South Beach is extremely flexible, and I can't wait to hear how you're doing on it!! There's a lot of help, advice, and support to be found here -- post as often as you like!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I was hoping to hear something back.

Didn't too to good at watching the carbs today! I guess I have it in my mind that I'm starting after Thanksgiving, so I really lived it up today, eating pizza for lunch, a pear, pasta & chicken for dinner and , gasp ... ice cream for desert. I'm sooo weak and have not will power.

Even though I'm not officially starting the program until the day after Turkey Day, I'll try to watch the carbs and what I eat again tomorrow.

Barb, I do think it will be beneficial to you if you do watch them as much as possible before your official start and sort of ease your way into it. It's tempting to "go all out" before beginning a plan like this but I'm not sure that it really gets you off to the best start. It will take a lot of will power and determination to get you through those first two weeks. Trust me, I'm living there right now, I have two more days to go and it was pretty easy at first but I'm looking forward to saturday and eating a piece of fruit! ::yes::

August 10, 2004 - that was the last time I was here, and I have been really bad since then. Between work and soccer season, the SBD pretty much went out the window for SWMBO and me. I put about 15 pounds back on. We have picked the Monday after Thanksgiving to hit Phase 1 again. I need to lose this weight. It is strange though. I put the weight back on but everything still fits and I don't look any different (except in my face - you can really see it there). That tells me I have added some muscle mass, which I don't mind (especially at the ripe old age of 44). I had to stop working out for a while due to being sick, but I am now back on track. I started running on the treadmill as well as lifting three times a week, and I have noticed, again, that my energy levels have increased.

I need to adjust my clippie again to reflect the gain, but I plan on being back to where I was by Christmas at the latest. Wish me well, please.

I promise - I will do my best to check in more often.

:wave2: Hello Jerry, long time no see. I hope everything is going well and that you will be able to get back on track. We're here for ya!!!:jumping1:

Welcome back, Jerry! I'm new to the thread since the last time you were here but I did read every single post on here so I feel like I know you already. :)

Judging by how well you did before I'm sure you won't have any problems reaching your goal! Best WISHes to you! :)

Welcome back, Jerry! It's good to have you back with us!

It's funny, but a number of posts lately have made me reflect on what I like most about South Beach -- that it isn't a classic diet as in 'I'm going on a diet' or 'Man, I really blew my diet last week.' Rather, it's a way of eating that's designed to be possible and healthy for a lifetime -- taking into account that there will be times when you stumble or overindulge in an old pleasure or whatever. But you can just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and say 'Time to get back on track!' and do so! I'm totally inspired by everyone who's showing the gumption to get back on the Beach! Good on you all!! ::yes::

Jerry - I need to go back to Phase 1 again, as well. Was all set to start and then realized Thanksgiving is in there  So... I"m going to wait till after Thanksgiving as well and then hit Phase 1 again. Now, I just can't let myself go crazy between now and then!!!!!!

Woo Hoo! Phase 1 is officially over!

I managed to drop off 6lbs. during those two weeks! :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

I'm cautiously entering Phase 2, I'm going to add in one of the new carbs every other day and see how that goes and then add more from there.

I don't think Thanksgiving will be too bad really. I will probably eat more than I should but I will still avoid the "bad" carbs. I won't be having mashed potatoes, I'm modifying my famous mac & cheese recipe to make it as SB friendly as possible. Hopefully it will still turn out good, I have my fingers crossed. No rolls unless I can find some whole wheat ones. All the other foods we generally have are completely acceptible, ham, deviled eggs, vegetables. Since we'll be celebrating my birthday, which is actually 3 days later we're getting miniature cupcakes, just one for each of us so that there won't be any left. I think it will be alright. :)

What is everyone else having for Thanksgiving dinner?

Congratulations, Jerry, on getting your head back into the game. I'm in pretty much the same boat as you and am currently "cheating my clippie" by the 4.5 pounds I've gained. I have a good friend in my TOPS chapter who has helped me figure out how I got myself derailed. I think I know what I have to do to get myself straightened out. I'm walking again (though it's starting to get a bit nippy in Chicago which means it's time to dust off the Nordic Trak) and plan to start Phase 1 again right after Thanksgiving. I'm going to stick to phase 2 this week (with a Thanksgiving parole) and then walk the straight and narrow. I embarassed myself in the Thanksgiving challenge (I'll end up with a one pound gain), but I really hope someone puts up a challenge till the end of the year.

Michelle, how great for you!! I know you are feeling better and a wider variety of foods!!! Keep up the good work.

I'm not having any carb heavy foods except for maybe some dressing, which I am trying to make low-carb. I know that I can have whatever I want now that I'm at goal, but some things just don't taste as well anymore. I've gotten so used to Splenda that real sugar is gross to me. So, we're having fried turkey, dressing, cabbage, green beans, mac and cheese for the kids, squash, broccoli, low carb brownies, almond cake and ice cream. THat should about do it for me.

Just wanted to pop in to tell everyone that I test-drove a couple of recipes for Thanksgiving dessert today (and invited the neighbors over so there wouldn't be leftovers), and found a BIG winner. I baked the Flourless Chocolate Cake from the South Beach Cookbook, and it was such a hit that the kids were fighting over who got the most crumbs from the empty plate after they had vacuumed down the entire thing. I had a slice (and -- ahem -- a half) (okay, maybe more like two-ish slices, but VERY thin), and it's just unbelievable. Totally rich, moist, brownie-like -- mmmmmmm.

I've got 15 people on Thanksgiving, so I'm baking two of these beauties.

It's a Phase 3 recipe, and has a half-cup of sugar, and nothing else off-plan. I wanted to find something that wouldn't be too much of a detour for me, but not be noticably 'diet-like' for the non-SBers at my table, and I'm so pleased I found it!

Well, I am still working out, and, after reading some of the messages on the Men's Health web site, I plan on upping the cardio with some high intensity interval training. One site I checked for this suggested a combination sprint/jog routine, alternating 30 seconds of each. I tried it the other day after lifting and I was gassed after three sprints. This may work but I may have to switch to the Nordic Track because the running gives me too much joint pain in the left knee.

If you all don't hear from me before next week, have a very Happy and SAFE Thanksgiving.

(I fixed my clippie :( )

thotfulspot ~ I'm glad to hear that the flourless chocolate cake is good! I've had FCC at the Food & Wine Festival at EPCOT before and thought it was completely delicious!

Jerry ~ I hope you and your family have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving as well! Don't fret too much about the clippie, I'm confident that you won't be keeping that one very long. :)

Have a safe and happy thanksgiving Jerry. Good luck with the exercise, I know interval training is hard.

Thotful spot, thanks for the tips. I have a whole list of things I'm making starting tomorrow that is SB friendly. I know that now that I'm at goal I can eat whatever, but I'd rather stay healthy and stay within those foods instead of going overboard.

To everyone else, Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you and your families have a blessed, safe day.

Well everyone I survived Thanksgiving and I did very well. I didn't gain anything, and for that I'm proud. I know this is a way of life and learning to maintain is part of it. I hope to hear from everyone else soon.

Congratualtion Sheree'!!
I was up only a lb on my Friday weigh-in but it is gone and then some by today. I limited my portions on the goodies I had over the weekend which helped. I had only 1 tablespoon slightly rounded of mashed potatoes and gravy and 3 or 4 pieces of pie over the weekend (about 2" each so really only about 1 1/2 normal pieces split over several meals). There was two types of bread dressing this year one made with 100% whole wheat bread for those of us on SBD.

Good job. We were travelling to visit relatives in the Cleveland area, and my sister made a HUGE meal and we stuffed ourselves. I then spent the most of the rest of the night in the bathroom with my 12 year old son who picked up a touch of the flu and couldn't keep anything in his stomach. Poor kid - he is feeling much better now, though. SWMBO and I pretty much blew off the South Beach Diet this weekend, and I lost a pound. Go figure.

Phase one started over again this morning with breakfast. Ham and cheese omlet. So far I have had some cheese for a morning snack. No diving into the candy baskets here at the office today. So far so good.
