South Beach Dieters......... Unite

leanne - how distressing to have the scale at the doctor's office be off by such a large amount. I'm also sorry you'll be starting meds. Like you said, maybe once you get to goal, you won't have to take them anymore. Please take care of yourself!

Vicki - woohoo on the 4 pounds! I don't think it's a problem not to have certain foods (eggs for example) for breakfast every morning. I have them most mornings but it's because they tend to keep me more satisfied until snack time than on the days I don't eat eggs. But I think if ate them every day I'd get tired of them. About the water, there are two camps on this subject, I'm of the thought that nothing is like water except water but I know there are those that feel any liquid (including tea) counts toward your water intake. See if having the tea helps or hinders your weight loss. I think that's your best gauge. I'm glad my tips are helpful.

Cris - thanks for the link. I've gotta try making my own cheesecake again one of these days. My one and only attempt when I first started SBD wasn't all that great.

MickeyMagic - I have to admit the first six months on SBD, the weight just seemed to melt off me but now I have to fight for it. Nothing major just watching things that I could take for granted before like I used to be able to eat late and eat larger portions plus have my sugar free treats liberally. Not anymore. But I really do feel this program has been a godsend for me and my husband. I can't speak highly of it enough! Congrats to you for staying on Phase 1 an extra week. You will love Phase 2!

:wave2: Everyone

Leanne, dont' worry about the medication. I was taking Atenolol for an irregular heart beat when I started this. I have been off now for 2 months and I feel great. It does come in time. Of course the Atenolol was also helping my bloodpressure. I do find that destressing helps. I will pray that you can get off the medicine real soon. Oh and the extra weight on the Dr. scale, isn't that horrible!!!!! Don't worry about it. Go with what you always weight on.

Vicki, four pounds is great. I know you must be so very proud. Just look at the weekend as any other day. Also, everytime you get tempted, just remember that you just lost 4 pounds and you don't want to put it back on.

First timer checking in. Thinking of starting Phase 1 on 7/19. I am waiting until that date because I have been talking to my 11 year old son about doing the diet with me and he will be returning from camp that weekend.

Any thoughts on doing this diet with an 11 year old? I think after Phase 1 he will not be nutritionally deprived and will be learning to eat a lot healthier. My son is about 168 pounds and is already participating in a weight management program which emphasizes portion control and physical activity. The nutritionists frown upon what they call "fad diets" and lump SBD into that category. From all that I have read, it doesn't not seem like a fad to me, but rather a healthy way of eating for life. So my only concern is really Phase 1 for an 11 year old. From what I see he will not be having any milk or fruit. What are your thoughts? Perhaps I can have DS skip Phase 1?

I'll be starting at about 168 as well. Though truth be told, I have not had the guts to weigh myself all year. :guilty: :scared1: . I think 140 is a good weight for me. I will be sure to work up the nerve to hit the scale before I start.

I have only read about the first 20 pages of this thread, but hope to read it all before I get started. I am wondering whether or not we will be able to eat vegetarian products such as Boca and MorningStar Farms. Any one know? Also have some questions about the menus for Phase 1. I was thinking that as long as we stick with the foods listed on the permissable list for that Phase, and do not over do it on nuts, we should be ok. Is this correct? Also, I see that fat free milk is on the avoid list for Phase 1, but I can put non-fat milk in coffee. What is the diff? Does non-fat mean powdered? If so, would glasses of powdered milk be ok to give to my son?

I am looking forward to this, and am so glad to have been referred to this thread by someone on the CB.

Okay--confession. A big part of the reason that I will be starting on 7/19 is that with our son out of town, my husband (on Atkins) and I plan on eating out alot. Originally I had planned to have a week of Phase 1 under my belt before my son came home from camp. I will use the week as a study in how well I can eat out while on SBD. I will do my best to wave off the bread basket before it arrives.

IMGONNABE40!, welcome. This thread is just growing by leaps and bounds. I know the feeling about trying to get it all out before you start the diet. I think you will do fine. It is a great plan and the eating is manageable. If y our husband is doing atkins, phase one is similar, but then after that you start adding good carbs back into your system. To answer your question, I have heard those vegetarian meals are allowed. I believe he thinks it is acceptable because of its low fat content. Sticking to the list for phase 1 is a great way to start.

As for your son, I think as a mom, you know best. To keep him away from fruits and milk for 2 weeks may not be a bad thing. If milk is a big concern, try using some of the low carb versions. They are more expensive but it may help. Also if you feel as if he needs the fruit, let him have some wih the lowest carb count and sugar count. I think that any time you cut out excessive carbs, he can lose weight. Also try splenda, I love it as a sugar substitute.

Again welcome, and everyone else have a great day:wave2:

Happy Weekend everyone!

Thanks for all of the encouragement! I knew if I needed motivation for my diet I could find it here at Dis!

So far so good this weekend! Had Canadian Bacon Egg cups (yum) for breakfast and then my apt. complex had a pool party so I went and had salad and a hot dog w/o bun and water.

I didn't weigh so I am not sure if the tea had any effect on my weight or not but I am drinking water today and might have tea later but not for the whole day. I'm trying not to weigh everyday! I have always been a scale watcher and it would either make or break my day it seemed. So I am just going to weigh every 4 or 5 days and try to work up to once a week at the most.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Vicki

weighed myself on saturday morning (day 26) and had lost 4 lbs this week. thats a total of 16 lbs so far.

This weekend i have gone totally off and am going to go back to normal south beach stuff starting in the morning :teeth:

stal, that's great! Congratulations on your big loss!

IMGONNABE40!, non-fat milk and fat-free milk are the same thing. I'm going to hazard a guess that although you shouldn't be drinking it during Phase 1 in general, a dollop in your coffee won't hurt and makes it more drinkable. Eating out on South Beach is a very easy thing, by the way -- I'm sure you won't have any problems at all!

CoMickey, you're making me think happy thoughts about Canadian Bacon egg cups!

Happy Sunday, fellow Beachers!

:sunny:

I want to thank everyone again for all of the advice that you may have unknowingly given me but just posting info on this board!

I have made it to day 6 and feeling strong...excercised 6 days also! I am confident that I will get through the 2nd week of the first phase okay but there is one thing I really miss is a SANDWICH! I will look forward to week 3 when "maybe" I will chose to have a piece of whole grain bread for lunch with my turkey breast. Sometimes there is nothing like taking that first bite into a sandwich! Although maybe it's just a mental thing and my tastes for things will change! It seems like it has for many of you guys!

Just wanted to check-in and thank everyone once again :)

You'll do the happy dance when you taste them! I am thinking of making extras and then having them for breakfast during the week. A quick and easy breakfast.

The wonderful thing about the SBD is that I have liked all of the recipes that I have tried. And my DD and DBF also have not complained about having to eat 'diet' food.

The weekend has been good so far! We had beautiful weather so it was easy to stay busy.

Hey all:

Well, tonight marks the end of Day 5 and I'm pretty proud of myself;) We unexpectedly went away for the weekend with some friends and even though we ate out for 4 meals, I was really quite good about eating properly. It's really not so difficult. Day 2, for some reason, was the hardest but I toughed it out. DD and DH are also doing it so that helps immensely. I even came up with some more creative ways to cook/eat my eggs.:D

Onto Day 6 tomorrow.......

everyone is doing so well. That's terrific. panfan, CoMickey, TimeforMe, stal way to go. Phase 1 will be nearly over and you all will be so much lighter. Stay with it and stay strong:wave2:

I'm joining you on the sand.....I decided to start this yesterday... have almost 60lbs to lose, and going to DW in September--am hoping that I can get a chunk off before I go.

So far, so good...no cravings. The thing I don't like about SBD is the cost of groceries.

Had the Vanilla Ricotta Creme last night---yummy!!

Will keep you informed!

Great thread, and I've loved reading your stories.

Welcome, Monica!

It isn't only the groceries that are pricy, by the way -- buying all those new clothes after your old ones start to swim on you adds up, too. Whee!

mishoe-Welcome to the Beach. I did find the first couple of weeks to be expensive for groceries, but I stocked up at Costco on meat, seafood, etc, which did cost a bundle. After that, the budget seemed to level off. It was more a case of getting used to shopping the SBD way. Actually, I think the junk food I was buying was costing more.

Timeforme- My DH is also on SBD, and it REALLY makes a difference when both of you are on it. Cooking wise, it is easier to cook the same thing for both of us, rather than making separate meals. Also, we keep each other honest, and cheer each other on.

Hope everyone is having a good week. I am coming up towards two full months on the beach and couldn't be happier. As of last count, down 18 lbs, but I'm definitely feeling skinnier. Clothes that were snug a few weeks ago, are now looser. I have been very reliqious in my exercise, and am now seeing the rewards of using my Bowflex twice a week. That under-arm jiggle is getting less and less. :D

My total goal is 40 lbs, but wanting to lose at least 30 before my October trip to WDW. I should be on track for that. Again, thanks to everyone on this board. Your encouragement and support have helped tremendously.

Well....I have made it a whole week !! Managed to keep myself off the scale until this morning and.......

I lost 7 pounds....I couldn't believe it. I even "moved " my scale around different places in my room to double check. Now I know the first week is the most loss and so on, but what a great motivating factor to keep it going !!

I did have one "slip" tonite though. I was DS's 3rd birthday party. I had two bites of the cake. On the one hand I shouldn't have eaten it I know but on the other hand I don't think I would have ever had "two bites" more like two platefuls. Other than that I ate totally SB. I feel good about it . I made a great big salad that everyone complimented my on and had other assorted foods but ate just some turkey breast with my salad. Also my mother arrived with two plates of the most delicious "looking" candies that she made.....Notice I said "looking" cause I didn't try it !! Yeh for me !! I knew If i tried one I would be in trouble. It was a small pretzel with a 1/2 melted hershey carmel kiss with a peanut M&M on top..

I had two major hurdles this week ( with the Dunkin Donuts test last friday) and I will be back to normal tomorrow. I plan on getting my excercise in early to keep the motivation high! Gotta keep it going the rest of the week cause I have vacation the next week and I plan on doing well then too!

Off to start my Second Week on the Beach....

Thanks again so much to you all....gonna go do my new clippie now !

Actually all four of my family is doing this...

My husband and kids LOVED the "mashed potatoes" - ( I kinda thought they tasted like mashed caulifour - but hey - they LOOKED like potatoes... :bounce: )

The very bizarre thing is that we HAD to weigh this morning after one day - and my husband and I were both down 5 lbs each.. my son - who is quite large... was down TWELVE.. ) I really believe that there was some weird gravitational pull yesterday - as we all lost so much.. but we decided no more weighing until next Monday.. :hyper:

So far so good - my eating was a little weird today due to a stress test at the cardiologist.. but I certainly survived it.. not sure if that little chili at Wendy's was ok - but oh well...

Oh - and my family is not a fan of the ricotta stuff - hubby went to the grocery this afternoon and bought a BUNCH of the sugar free Jello.. :teeth:

panfan and pamlet, Congratulations on the weight loss. You all did so terrific. Here is a big:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
Way to go you guys, keep up the good work. Isn't SBD great!!!!!

panfan and pamlet, that's terrific!! Good for you!! :cool1: :cool1:

Leanne, wow! Nice going! You must be totally proud of yourself! :sunny:

Okay. Getting ready to start Phase 1 on Sunday 7/19 when DS gets home from camp. We have run out of most of our food and I will throw out some other stuff that may prove too tempting for us to keep.

Can anyone help me put together a good Phase 1 shopping list? It is not likely that I will have time to do many of the recipes that are in the book, but i will likely prepare a lot of chicken and fish with an occasional beef meal thrown in. Any advice appreciated.
