South Beach Dieters......... Unite

It's really hard to deal with situations like that, I think. Especially when it's family...food almost becomes an extension of their affection. In some instances, someone on a diet can almost seem...selfish. My friend and I were actually talking about this last night. She lost a lot of weight last year on the SB, and she was saying that some of her friends would be upset with her...like she was ruining their fun girls night out because she wasn't drinking beer or having a dessert.

The in-laws thing...I really relate here. I'll be seeing mine in a month, and I'm really nervous. I love them and they've treated me so well, but they are very opinionated and have very definitely ideas about what is or isn't healthy (I found one evening when they made gentle but pointed references to my being overweight). They always welcome us home with a TON of food (Italians) so I'm going to have to be really strategic.

I think the best strategy is just anticipating those moments...like when someone goes to the kitchen for dessert, just tell them that you are really full and maybe you'll just have coffee. If they get all bent out of shape, say you'll take a piece home with you...then you can just dump it in the trash later. Or just be honest...but be prepared for the longer conversation that might follow.

Happy Monday everyone!!

I lost 2lbs this week after a couple of weeks of not losing. I have now hit the 20lb mark. I am hoping to lose 20 more before my vacation in December. I went to have my cholesterol checked because it had gone up to 273, and it is now down to 219. Hopefully in a few more months it will be below 200.

I hope everyone has a great week!!! :cool1:

Congrats Michelle on reaching the 20 lb mark ! :cool1:

Calena - great that you're seeing results in how your clothes fit ..... that's been a fun part for me in this process - fitting back into clothes that have been hanging in my closet for YEARS waiting for me ........ Being in phase 2, the way I handle the social situations is that if I'm at a b-day party and want a piece of cake, I'll have a small slice and move on .... I'm looking at this as a way I'm going to eat for life and I can't pretend I'm never going to have another piece of cake again.....you just have to try not to let any treats you give yourself or major slipups (as I just had this weekend - carb central! ;) ) derail what you've already done or make you feel "I cheated so what's the use" ...... just get back on plan as soon as you can and move forward ! :)

Calena, it is hard to handle those types of situations. I've had to deal with them and I just still try to find whatever I can eat. Eve nthough now I'm at goal, I still stay away from so many foods as it is what makes me feel more comfortable. Stay strong :goodvibes

Michele :bounce: :Pinkbounc :cheer2:

I am so into the last minute packing for my trip. Sorry if my posts are short. I am really thinking about you all and wishing you al the best. Let's keep on going "down"!!!!!

Hi everyone- I'm just starting day 4 of phase 1. I had a bad day yesterday, but I didn't cave. Food was the first thing that came to mind when I got upset (pizza, to be specific), but instead I took my cranky self to Curves and tried to get out my frustration in exercise. Interestingly enought, while I was there, one of the women said that the new South Beach packaged pizza (she found it at Wal-mart) was really great! I might have to give it a try once I reach phase 2.

Have a good day! :)

Keep going Christin! I also found about day 3 or 4 got tough, but look at me now, I am almost at Phase 2. Keep up the good work. I found I could not push my body too hard as I got used to my new eating plan, so you are doing great to be able to work out at Curves. ;)

I am almost at the end of my two weeks of Phase 1. I will weigh at the official end of the two weeks - ;) Thinking of staying on for a couple more days, maybe a week. For you experienced SB folk, how did you ease into Phase 2. I am interested in fruit at this point more than anything else. So I think I will be reintroducing fruit and my slow-cooked oatmeal which I love in the a.m. Any suggestions/experience welcome. :sunny:

Hi Celena

When I transitioned from phase 1 to phase 2, I spent a couple of weeks in what I call phase 1 1/2. I added back just one phase 2 food per day. Then, increased it to two foods and so on. It seemed to help keep the weight loss up during the transition.

Well... its time for my two-week check-in with Phase I. Total pounds lost... seven! :cool1: (I had been hoping for that elusive 15 lbs in 2 weeks on the book cover but hey...) This also brings my total pounds lost to 11 since starting WISH, so I feel pretty good about that. I have gone from a BMI of 29.1 to 27.2 so that is great. Another 15 lbs off and I will be at BMI of 25. My goal is another 29 lbs off which puts me at a comfortable BMI of 22.3. My jogging is also helping my body composition so I feel better about how I look now, but will keep going!
So.... I will be easing into Phase 2 slowly I think. Now that I can eat fruit I haven't gone nuts, (hey, I could eat nuts for awhile :rotfl2: ) so we will see. Saw some great looking cherries in the store last week and if they are still at a good price... It is amazing to me that after two weeks I am looking forward to fruit as oppossed to cheese croisants or turtle ice cream... not that I would not enjoy that stuff, but I don't feel this overwhelming desire. I can see that this plan is working for me and I understand my cravings a lot better.
SO.... any hints on Phase 2? I will be there for awhile I think! THANKS FOR ALL THE ENCOURAGEMENT ON THIS BOARD! :flower:

Calena - congratulations on graduating from Phase 1 and on your terrific weight loss.....I was hoping for the max loss during the first 2 weeks and lost 8 instead....but now I'm up to 41 so keep it up ! As for phase 2 tips, I would echo what Jeremy said and start things slowly - don't add too much back at once and see how your body reacts to it. It sounds like fruit is what you missed the most so I would probably choose that - a treat that's legal :) For me it was my morning cereal that I missed the most so I added that back in daily (although some of my favorites are not on the good list :() and would then have a piece of fruit every other day ........ keep up the good work - you are having success on the beach !

Calena, how wonderful for you. I too advice to add in slowly. Start with berries. They seem to be lower on the glcemic index. Don't try breads at every meal or anything like that. It might be too much to soon. Both Jeremy and spb999 have given you some great advice! :cool1:

spb999, you are still doing so wonderful! 41 pounds is a great thing :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Hi Everyone ~ I'n new to this board, just started looking around and was surprised to find a thread devoted to SBD. I have a question that may have been addressed in a previous post but I haven't gone through all 107 pages of the posts yet. Sorry if it has been addressed previously.

I was wondering if any of you have signed up for the SBD program on-line. I got an advertisement for it tonight and am considering it. It's about $5 a week, provides meal planning, guides for eating out, shopping lists, chat rooms, support, etc. (Of course, now I see from this thread you can find the support for free! :goodvibes )

Anyway, if anyones has had any experience with the program on-line I'd love to hear both good and bad.

Thanks for any help!

eeyore....I remembered reading about this a couple of pages back

I signed up for the online beach experience and can't really recommend it. The customized menus are just the menus from the book. I'm sure there are other bells and whistles that might make it worthwhile, but I haven't had time to go digging for them. Am I missing "good stuff"?
:confused3

Lori, I signed onto it when I first started and then after 2 months cancelled because it didn't help me much. I know some like it for the updates, but for me, it wasn't worth it. There are many other online sources that would help you out much much more.

Thanks, everyone for the quotes. ANd I'll start working my way through this thread a little more!!!

Thanks again! :)

eeyoresmountainpals, you are more than welcome to keep asking questions. I understand that it's a lot to go back and read. I would have responded earlier, but I'm prepareing to leave for Disneyland. I'm not taking my laptop with me this time, so I won't post again until I come back which will be around July the 1st! There are others here who I'm sure know enough about the beach to help you out.

eeyore--even with that info, I have just signed up for SBD online yesterday. I was reading on another forum that there are a lot of recipes on there. There is also a fairly active message board. My current plan is to give it the first three months (For $65) and then see what I think at that point. I will be happy to post and let you know what I think.

sm4987 ~ Thanks! Have a wonderful time! Let us know how your trips goes!

disneymom3 ~ Please let me know how it goes. We're going on vacation 6/25 - 6/30 (to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge) so I was figuring on trying it when we get back if I decide to do it. I liked the idea that you could cancel after four weeks and get a refund of all but $20 if you decided not to do it so at least I look at it as only losing $20 if I don't care for it. I did like the idea of the recipes. I think I can do pretty well on something like this but I also have to be able to cook for my family. Thanks again...and good luck with it!
