South Beach Dieters......... Unite

calena, yes, it's probably sugar withdrawal. Hang in there, it will go away. WTG on staying on, it will payoff real soon!

Day 3 done! I was feeling lousy around noon so I took a short nap... I do think the headache was sugar withdrawal.... but I didn't cheat. Feel a lot better tonight. Grilled steaks and veggies for supper. It helps me to post on here too to know others have done this ;)

keep it up Calena. By the end of next week, you will be down several pounds, feeling stonger and healthier. Your menu sounds great. Any questions, come back and we will be happy to answer them for ya!

Day 4 done! Yesterday was tough. Went to in-laws for lunch. They had served red wine for all the adults (Phase 2) and then it was time to eat and DH was spooning out mashed potatoes and he puts some on my plate... I was like "I DON'T want potatoes!" So... I just didn't eat them... but I did drink about half of the glass of red wine. Otherwise lunch was great. Chicken, salad and asparagus for me. Then dessert came. DD, 10, wanted to make chocolate mousse and I helped her make it. We had whipped cream on top. Anyway, I had to try a spoonfull... just to see what it tasted like. But I kept it at a spoonfull. :flower:
Then... we were all playing at the pool and DS, 5, jumped backwards into the pool and hit his chin hard on the cement edge. It really started bleeding. I had visions of busted teeth but he just had a cut on the chin, so... I cleaned it up. It looked deep to me, so I took him to the ER for a check. I would have hated for him to have needed stitches and I didn't take him, so I just took him in to make sure. He didn't need stitches... but I got a reprimand on "how dangerous it could have been" by the doc. She tested his neck too because that could have been a bad concern. I'm glad I took him in at least for the neck thing. So... by then it was "my" snack time. Feeling low, but as we drove by all the fast food places I did not succumb! VICTORY! I got DS a slush puppie which he loves and we went home loaded down with lots of colourful bandaids and ointment for the chin.
Went for a jog with DD, 10, but felt drained. Did more walking than jogging. Hard day emotionally with DS getting hurt.
Today is Day 5 and I started with a South Beach breakfast and have my almonds here for snack this a.m. :flower:

Hope DS is doing ok today Calena !

Sounds like you handled yesterday well - a couple of minor slips but overall you stood strong......back on track today - way to go !

Calena, You are doing great!! Good job on handling the diet/WOE with all the extra stuff going on for you yesterday. Enjoy being proud of yourself for your success.

I am just finishing my second week of SBD. I made the choice to starte Ph 2 last Friday and had some whole grain toast with Laughing cow for breakfast but did all Ph 1 stuff for the rest of the day. Sat, I stayed Ph 1 for the morning, forgot to eat lunch and then had a wedding at 3:00. There were appetizers served at the reception--some cheesy artichoke thing on very white french bread which I watched DH eat and had none. I did have a little chicken on a stick and an aritchoke heart with a little cream cheese in it. That seemed pretty safe. Then dinner we had beef, but the vegetables that came with it were carrots, beets and potatoes. Nope, can't have those. Cake came and I had a few bites but decided I wanted to save my off program cals for.....the chocolate fountain!! Oh yes, I definitely indulged in that and it was a choice I made to do it. No regrets. I also had two Kahluha and creams which were not quite planned for diversions but they were darn good! Oh yeah, there were these really good chocolates on the tables and I had some of those too. :earseek: They were dark chocolate at least

Yikes, okay confessing here, it sounds like a lot!! They also had an evening snack and there were chips and crackers and little rolls, but there were also meats, cheeses and lettuce tomato and pickles so I just had those and had a breadless sandwich.

Yesterday, I had a tortilla with black beans and cheese, and a roast beef sandwich with the bun. I also drank a ton of water all weekend. The rest of the day was totally Ph 1 stuff.

AND this morning when I weighed in (and I can tell I am retaining water)I have lost about 1.5 lbs. May not seem like a lot, but I haven't lost anything for 3 weeks, including the last week I was doing my shake/meal replacement, so I am thrilled to have seen the scale go down a little!! I am at 19 lbs down now and I am feeling soooo psyched!!

OK -

I'm going to come clean here!

I've been on the SBD since April 6 and did phase 1 religiously. I managed to lose 5 or 6 lbs on phase 1. I started out really well on phase 2. I ate my veggies and avoided all the bad stuff. After about 3 weeks I had lost another 4 or 5 pounds.

And then I started to slip -- yikes! I can't say that I'm on the SBD because there are things that I have that I shouldn't have and there are things that I should have that I don't ---

Like the veggies with the meals, etc. I'm still very bad about fruits and veggies.

But the good thing is that I am still losing weight, slowly, but I'm losing. I know if I start to exercise I will definitely boost this loss.

And the other good thing is that I eat a LOT more health-ily than I ever did. I don't eat ANY white flour (that includes pastries, pasta, white bread, rice). I eat whole wheat flour, brown rice, whole wheat bread.

I am very very very good about avoiding sugar. Now, I will allow myself a treat once in awhile. Maybe an ice cream or small piece of cake at a birthday or other celebration. No chips or that kind of thing.

And I really like the change in lifestyle and eating habits. I'm bound and determined to take off the rest of the weight and I know I can keep up with my healthy way of eating.

So, just curious if anyone else has modified things successfully?

Kris

calena, sound like you are ding great. You are making great food choices and making right choices. I don't drink so I can't tell you if the wine will effect you at all. I hope your son is doing much better. Can't wait to hear more from you! :cool1:

disneymom3 :goodvibes 1.5 pounds may not seem like a lot but that is 1.5 pounds that hopefully you will never see again. Wait until you know you are no longer retaing water and you will probably be down much much more

Kris  That is the way I eat now, but in the beginning until I lost it all, I stuck to the plan. However, if this is working for you, keep at it. Just changing your eating habits (leaving out the white stuff and sugars and such) may have been what your body needed :cheer2: :cheer2:

Hey ladies. We are always complaining about bloating. I found some tips on the firm website. I have always told my husband that for some reason eating eggs on a regualr basis keeps me slim and I didn't know why. Now I do! I think I'm gonna eat more eggs for breakfast!

"Ugh, I feel so bloated." We've all said that at some point in our lives, and we've probably had friends complain to us about their bloat. So, what's it all about? Why do we get bloated, and is there anything that we can do to combat those puffy eyes and swollen fingers? The answer is a definite yes! There is a lot that you can do with your diet to combat bloating and to help you feel lean and svelte. This article comes out at a good time of year, since the summer's heat and humidity tends to make bloating even worse!

Major causes of bloat
Dehydration
You might think that being dehydrated would cause you to be thinner and less bloated, the thought being that less water in your body would cause you to be less bloated. But it actually works in the opposite manner. When your body does not have enough fluids coming in, it will conserve every bit of water that it can. Your kidneys will stop producing urine as to hold onto your water, which will in turn cause you to bloat. The best way to combat dehydration-based bloating is to drink tons and tons of water. If you wake up in the morning feeling heavy (i.e. your rings feel tight, eyes are puffy, and shoes are smaller than usual), start drinking water! Guzzle room temperature water (as it goes down easier than iced water) by the glassful. Continue to drink water until your urine is just about clear, and you have the urge to pee about 2x per hour. By this time, your rings will likely feel looser and you'll be a lot more comfortable.

Sugar
There are many things that I dislike about sugar, but one of the biggest detractors is that sugar will cause you to retain water. Sugar is made up of refined simple carbohydrates, and your body stores one gram of water for every gram of carbohydrate that you ingest. So think of it this way - if your bag of candy has 50 grams of carbs, you will store 50 grams of water - no way around it. You might notice that if you go on a sugar bender, you will wake up the next day feeling heavy, bloated and maybe even "hung over." So to look your best, avoid sugar and refined carbs as much as possible.

Salt
This probably comes as no surprise, but salt causes the body to hold onto water. In order to dilute the salt that you have ingested, your body will conserve water. This water and salt combination is deadly. Any of us who enjoy Chinese or Japanese food has probably experienced this. So my advice is to watch your salt intake and opt for low sodium products whenever possible. If you want to look good the next day, I would avoid saucy Asian food. When you do choose to indulge in a salty soup, or some salted chips, be sure to pair it with a large glass of water.

Alcohol
While there is nothing wrong with a single glass of wine or a light beer, over-imbibing will cause you to be downright bloated the next day. It has been said that alcohol will cause the most bloating in your face, and that Hollywood actors make a strict rule to banish cocktail consumption while on the set. The cause for the bloating is numerous, but the major culprit is that alcohol will dehydrate your body. So… if you want to have a few extra cocktails, and still look human the next day, be sure to amp up your water before hitting the sack.

Hormones
This unfortunate cause of bloating is the one that we have the least amount of control over. Sadly, once a month, you can count on a few days of bloating that cannot be prevented. The good news is that you can plan on it, and can try to fight it by avoiding all of the aforementioned factors (i.e. with PMS, be sure to avoid sugar, salt, and alcohol - and drink more water than humanly possible).

Piecing together the anti-bloat diet
So now that you understand what makes us bloat, let's talk about what we can eat without risking puffy eyes and swollen feet. At The FIRM we are always talking about "clean eating," which is a style of eating that incorporates lean protein, fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy, whole grains and lots of water. When you follow a clean diet, you will find that it is also a good anti-bloating diet.

Beyond eating a clean diet, there are some "super foods" that are thought to contain anti-inflammatory substances. Without getting into too much detail, some of the foods that are considered anti-inflammatory, and will further decrease bloating include:

Multi colored berries and melon
Salmon and other fish high in omega 3 fatty acids
Oatmeal
Eggs
Broccoli
Olive oil
Avocado
Almonds

Now that we know what to eat and what not to eat, let's make an anti-bloating meal plan!

Breakfast
½ cup cooked oatmeal, (preferably not instant) A small cup of lowfat yogurt topped with strawberries and blueberries 16 ounces of water

Lunch
A large green salad topped with chickpeas, avocado, low-fat cheese, sliced tomatoes and roasted red peppers, dressed with olive oil and vinegar and served with melba toast 16 ounces of water

Snack
10 almonds A large wedge of cantaloupe 16 ounces of water

Dinner
Broiled salmon filet topped with fresh lemon, served with broccoli sautéed in olive oil Side salad with romaine lettuce, sliced tomatoes and slivered almonds, dressed with olive oil and vinegar 16 ounces of water

I like the meal plan.... can I come for supper? :flower: I miss my oatmeal. I always made the large flake kind for breakfast, so that will be part of my phase 2 occasionally.
Day 5 done on South Beach. Still feel light headed a bit :sad2: , but no cravings ;) ... I did a search on hypoglycemia and I think this is my body adjusting to the "good carb lifestyle" for now. I am making an effort to drink lots of water to flush my body out and not push myself too hard this week with my exercise plan. Yesterday I swam so that is great. I had been jogging four times a week but I walked more than jogged on Sunday and will see how I feel tonight when I go to jog.
I am struggling with finding food I can eat on the run. I just want to find something fast to eat and am struggling with that... I don't crave the cookies/ice cream/bread right now, but at times it is tempting because it is accessible and fast. DH was eating a sugar free fudgesickle last night I bought for the program... so that is better for him too. This morning was hectic... so I had ricotta and tomatoes for breakfast and decaff green tea. Have almonds for my morning snack. Going grocery shopping today to get me through the next week! Any suggestions on phase 1 meals on the go would be great. ;)

I don't know if I mentioned this yet, but I weighed yesterday and am down 2 lbs since starting South Beach. I also already feel it in the tummy area with my shorts etc. :cool1:

Hi all things are going OK here. I'm not gaining weight but not losing much either. A lot of bouncing up and down about a lb. Fortunately each down is still a little lower than the one so I'm still creeping down.

Calena - Great job on the 2 lb loss. I too felt a little light headed for a couple of day. I never had major cravings but I just felt a little off. When it passed, I felt better than I had in a long time.

Kris - I have had some success combining features from a couple of different plans. When I eat out, I tend to try to go more Atkins Friendly. I also have added a few off program foods that I try to eat in moderation. It has slowed my weight loss way down these past several weeks but I also feel the way I'm eating is more sustainable for me. I'm still trying to tweak thing but it the long run for me, finding something sustainable is more important than speed now. When I first started, the speed was a real motivator. I had about 150lbs to lose when I started and if I had been losing 1/2 a lb a week like I am now I probably would have never stuck with it. Now though, It's not as fast as It was but I'm also 70% there.

Calena, remember you can add some of these foods back in stage 2. Eggs you can have now, not to mention Salmon and other fish high in omega 3 fatty acids, Eggs
Broccoli, Olive oil and I believe the nuts. It's been a while since I've been in stage one. Check it out, it might be able to help!

Day 6 done! Had a great chicken ceaser salad last night. No crutons for me! Grilled chicken on it. GREAT. I had my first sugar free fudgesickle and it was good... satisfying. Swam with the kids for 40 minutes. Lightheadedness is better - much better, so plan on jogging today. Still feel good and staying on the plan! ;)
Hope I'm not posting too much... it helps me to know there are other successful South Beachers out there.

Calena, you can never post to much. It helps with accountabilitya nd we are here to support you. Keep coming back and trust me some one will respond!

Jeremy, how close are you to goal? I know that the closer you get the slower it goes! Keep at it though, it will come off.

Today I got to thinking and decided I would try to figure out when I started SB. Figured out (from this thread) that it was six weeks ago today.

So far, 6 weeks and 16.75 lbs. gone (just wish someone would notice). I feel better. No more episodes of light headedness and shakes that send me reaching for everything in sight. Eating too many almonds. Too many calories, plus getting a little boring. Need to figure out some different snacks.

Went to the movies with the family on Sunday night. I ate 1/2 of a low carb wrap at Arby's before we went and then had the children's bag of popcorn. I know it isn't on the "good" list, but I knew I was going to do it going in, and felt no regrets. Only ate what was in my bag, and no refills! DD6 sat next to DH, so I couldn't sneak into his bag either.

Still feeling strong about SB. Feels much more like Phase 1 1/2 than 2. Haven't added a lot of fruits and whole grains, but do eat a ton of veggies and "good" salads (not iceburg).

Oh well, back to work!

wtg Momster. 16 lbs gone and never to return again

Great news momsters.....16 lbs is great !!

Calena - keep on posting !! We're here for you :)

I returned to Phase I on Monday after taking a break for my vacation at DW. I only gained 2 pounds on vacation, but I got majorly addicted to the carbs again. I have been doing well on Phase I--no cheating. I have already lost 1.5 pounds, so only 1/2 pound left to go to be at my pre-vacation weight. I am actually wearing a suit today that I have not been able to fit into for 7 years! Everyone at work thinks it's a new outfit. ;)

I have been so proud of my weight loss and how I look, but I was reminded on vacation that I must keep going when a nice lady turned to me and asked me when my baby is due. You should have seen her face when I kindly replied that I am not pregnant. Geez people, you try having a washboard stomach after 4 kids (including twins) in 5 years! :rotfl:
