South Beach Dieters......... Unite

Julie K.
Congratulations on dropping 10 lbs. SB definitely opens your eyes to a new way of eating (WOE) rather than "dieting". I agree with you about the apple/pb snack. Who ever thought they could get excited about a Granny Smith apple, cut into wedges & spread with natural peanut butter. But I'm salivating as I write this. Alas, no apples in the house, so I'll have to "settle" for a sugar-free fudgicle. SGG

I'm stuck at 4#s so far but have faith it will begin again. My body is a little confused. Discovered low carb Ice Cream bars( Blue Bunny, Skinny Cow) I use it as a little reward if I hang in there all day. I sleep better and don't have heartburn like I used to. I haven't gotten my exercise started yet. We're finishing the basement of our new house and I takes a lot of energy , so I think I'm okay after carrying 20 sheets of sheetrock and screwing it down with a screw gun. Painiting today! Love to paint! Carpet next. I'm going to try to get in a 30 min. early morning walk a few times this week. I live where it gets -35 below in January and today it's 36 above. Heat wave!! Love this country though! Snow is absolutely beautiful!! When Spring gets here , we will be landscarpeing and gardening. THink that will burn a few calories. Hope everyone has a great week and drops at least 1#and 1 inch.

Hi everyone!

Just checking in before the weekend is over. I mentioned earlier in the week that I cheated and weighed myself on Thursday instead of waiting for today. I am happy that the 2 pounds is still gone so it's official now (lol). I am 1 pound away from my 35 pound clippie and that's exciting. TOM is on the way and I've started working out with heavier weights so having this 2 pound loss this week is just great for me.

Julie - congratulations on the 10 pound loss! That clippie looks beautiful on you. Keep up the great work! I never thought about trying the apple with the natural peanut butter. I may have a new favorite snack here. Could you post the recipe for the mock danish, that sounds delicious!

decaff38 - you have a great attitude. I know a lose is headed yoru way.

Jerry - thanks for the suggestion about putting our veggies on the Foreman grill. I've never thought about it before. We'll have to give it a try.

I hope everyone has a good cheat free week!

Good morning everyone! Congrats Julie!

I have been doing vegetables on the Forman for years now - What I like to do is to soak the veggies (broccoli rab - the long thin things - are my favorite) in balsamic vinegar and garlic.

I want to confess that I had a terrible weekend - in fact I blew it out and completely abandonded my effort at starting the SBD. I meant to do it BUT......

I brought my book with me everywhere I went and finished the reading of it I still needed to do - I have two days under my belt and a few pounds managed to slip off (which may be due to working out but...) - and now I am more comfortable with the diet and what I need to do. I was getting hung up on having to make exactly what they listed. I now get the concept better and am doing great on my new first day (hopefully I don't keep coming back here every Monday and declare it is my new first day ;) ) I love turkey roll-ups and I happen to give my son mozzerella string chees all the time so I have it handy. My crockpot is already going with roasted chicken breast for tonight. And last but not least - even though I was intentionally blowing the diet I found myself doing it nonetheless. I had no interest in any morning bread stuff and lunch at my sister's of Meatball sandwhiches were much more appealing to me as just meatballs with sauce.

I CAN DO THIS!

castlegazer- It's o.k. to have a bad time. Just get back on the wagon and resolve to do better!

I didn't get an answer (two pages ago), so I'll try again....

Can someone explain the whoosh theory to me? I read the book but don't recall this.

I'm hoping that there's something to it because I seem to be "stuck" on 10 pounds. I barely began eating Phase 2 foods this past week and haven't had a single white starch, cookie, piece of bread, cracker, anything for over three weeks. No cheating. Why no budging?

I wish I knew. Someone explain the whoosh theory to me too.

I'll give "whoosh" a try, based on my recollection from these Bds. The concept is definitely not in SB book. I believe people noticed that, at times, when they followed the diet, they had no weight loss. But then suddenly, they would have a substantial weight loss, almost making up for the earlier lack of loss. I think it was unofficially attributed to the body making certain adjustment to different eating patterns. I know from my own experience that I lost weight at about 1-2 lbs. per wk., so I can't offer personal "whoosh" experience. Someone feel free to correct my "whoosh" explanation if I'm completely off base.

Castlegazer- Don't get down on yourself about giving in to temptation. It's okay. It happens to us all at times. Just remember that it's in the past and keep with the plan today. You can do it!::yes::

Lisa- Basically the mock danish tastes like the cheese from a cheese danish. It's pretty sweet, so it's not something I would want every day; but it's a nice treat every once in a while for breakfast. Anyway, here it is:

2 or 3 oz. light cream cheese, softened
1 egg
1 tbs. splenda
1 tsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix cheese and egg thoroughly. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

Dodie,

I have only lost 6 lbs so far during the first two weeks of SBD. I was fairly sad about this at first, I mean hey why aren't I losing like some people that have done this. I think there are alot of factors at play. I think the more you have to lose the faster you see the lbs come off. (at least at first) also this isn't a lose it fast kind of diet it is a way of eating so as your body adjusts you will lose it. (the whoosh theory you've heard about) You also have to look at other things too. How are your clothes fitting, better I bet. Has anyone commented on how you look? Your skin, hair, energy level, etc. Although, I've only lost 6 so far. I notice a big difference in all of those things. Have you lost your sweet tooth? I have and it is a wonder to me. (I thought I would crave sweets forever!) So, I look at it as little or really not so little victories. The weight WILL come off, just stick with it. I know I am although I really, really would like to see that scale move...LOL

Keep up the good work and "onward and downward"

I have found that having some success with South Beach has changed my outlook on a lot of things. I no longer dread working out - I enjoy it. I am starting to see some muscle tone again, and I have greater strength in my muscles as well. What used to be a difficult test of willpower now has become second nature - for example, drinking water instead of soda, or bypassing the candy basket in my classroom (although I did celebrate the 30 poung clippie and allowed myself some small Reese's Peanut Butter Cups). I guess what it comes down to is making a lifestyle change and accepting that change.

So, what's next? :D

Well here goes. This is my first post over here on this board. I think I am finally ready to get rid of this weight for good. My name is Lisa and I am addicted to Coke, sweets, and bread. I have slowly put on about 40 lbs over the last 6 yrs and finally have to stop and do something about it. I read the SBD book from cover to cover yesterday and went to the grocery store last nigt so I am ready to go today. I am proud of myself, I went for a 30 minute walk this AM and have been right on track so far with my eating. I really hope this works. It would be so wonderful to not always be so selfconscious about what I am wearing or how I am sitting. I read through this whole thread and I think it is wonderful how well you have all done and the support you have given each other. I would love to be a part of this. Thanks for the inspiration. Lisa

Welcome aboard, Lisa (wow - we have a LOT of Lisa's around here :D ). Congrats on your decision to join us on the Beach. This is a great place for encouragement and support. ::yes::

Before you know it, you will be adding WISH clippies to your signature. ::yes::

Welcome again,

Can I join too? I've actually been doing South Beach for about a month now and have lost 4 pounds. Before that I was on Atkins for a month so in total I am down 8.4 pounds. (but who's counting :p )

I love SB so much more because of the variety and also because I was really feeling weak and tired all of the time on Atkins.

Anyway....as soon as I figure out how to put a thingy on my signature I'll do it.

I'm going on the Disney Wonder in less than two months and am hoping to lose 10 pounds by then so I can be in a size 16 instead of a 16W. My biggest problem is exercising...or finding the time to exercise since I'm a single mom with two girls who works fulltime.

Well enough out of me!

Lisa- Welcome, I'm so glad you've decided to join us. You will find lots of support here. I'm also a sweets and bread lover. I have to say that I don't really miss either one on this diet very much. I've found that the food is really satisfying. Hope you have lots of success on the Beach!

Bostonlass- Welcome to you too!!:wave2: It sounds as though you are already on your way to that size 16 for your trip. I'm sure you will be successful. SB really does have a good variety of foods to enjoy and it's a very simple diet to follow. Please make sure to keep us informed about your progress.

Hi to Lisa and Bostonlass!

We sure do have a lot of Lisa's around here and I'm one of them :).

It's nice to have you both aboard. This is a great place for encouragement and inspiration. Come back and post often.

Lisa - once you get the hang of the program, it will become second nature and it truly can and does become a way of life.

Bostonlass - you'll be in that size 16 in no time. Have fun on your cruise.

Have any of you guys joined the April 1st challenge? This is my first official challenge and I hope it helps me stay on track to lose 10 pounds by April 1. It would be fun to have some SBDers on board. I apologize if you have already signed up and I missed your name.

Guys - I have a question on my third day. I did Atkins for a year prior to my wedding four years ago so I am familiar with doing that diet. When I get hectic, I seem to lean more to an Atkins like diet than I SBD during this first two week period. Is this bad? What is the difference - I know the difference after the first two weeks? Am I doing this wrong?

For example, today I did not have time to make breakfast at home so when I got to work I had an egg and two strips of bacon (they don't have canadian bacon at the caf). I then did low fat string cheese for snack and now for lunch I have baked chicken and a salad. I have for afternoon snack some celery and some pistachios (I love that these are allowed). This seems to be plan, but it also seems to be a lot like Atkins.

What you are planning sounds good to me. I don't know how similar Atkins induction is to SBD Phase 1 because I've never done Atkins but what you are doing sounds like it's on plan. Personally, I don't like turkey bacon and don't really care for canadian bacon either so I don't eat them. I always eat regular bacon.

My take on Phase 1 is that it's pretty much lean meats and veggies with an allowance for nuts, eggs and low fat cheese. The real differences will come once you get to Phase 2 and you can add the whole grains back to your diet.

You're doing good - keep it up!!!! :)

Hello everyone!

My name is Lynn and I started SBD on 1/31/04. I've lost 14 pounds so far. I would like to lose 86 pounds. I did the yo-yo dieting thing for most of my adult life. Unfortunately, when it all came back, it came back double. Then I had a baby and never lost that weight. I also had a rare adrenal tumor which wasn't discovered until I was 35 and once they took that out, I really don't have any metabolism left. So, not that I'm looking for excuses, because I'm not. I'm the only one opening my mouth and inserting the food. However, it's been a difficult and frustrating road to try to lose this weight. I've got to get back on my treadmill because that will jump start my metabolism as well. I'm so glad to have found you and I hope you can offer lots of advice and encouragement.

Luv2Dream- welcome. You definately have a suppot group here. I never lost my baby weight either, and that was 4 years ago. Then I had surgery on my stomach because I had a hernia (resulting from the last pregnancy). I also decided that something had to change. I've lost 15 pounds since the start, and am very happy. Good luck with your journey and come back here whenever you need a lift, or just a sounding board.
