Sheree--what are your thoughts on carrots? I know that they were originally on the list of foods to avoid for phase one, and then sparingly in 2 and 3...but then they changed their minds and put carrots as OK all the way through. I love baby carrots and could eat them all day long...if I wasn't terrified of them...LOL

Clang, welcome. :welcome: I would recommend doing phase 1. It really does help get rid of the cravings and the wants for sweet foods. Read the book from cover to cover, and although everyone slams Atkins, he also has a book on good/bad carbs and how to eat for life. He doesn't promote eat nothing but meat and cheese for the rest of your life!

3disneykids, my thoughts on carrots. I still do them sparingly. I haven't really had any carrots at all either in the last couple of years. Why, cause I got terrified of them. Of course they are in your salads when you go out or buy premixed, and that about all I use of them. Potato? What is that?? I haven't touched them at all ever never. Pasta, rarely, but I do like dreamfields pasta which hasn't had any impact on me at all. I always find a sub for the carrots, because I like you could eat them quite often, just not raw! I can munch on celery, brocolli, but not on the carrots.

Here is my take on things with how he changed the SBD. I think he did everything in his power to make himself not "low carb" and I think that's why he added in so many exceptions. However, I find that when I stick to his original plans, it works out so much better for me than with all of the updates. People get angry I think when they are told to limit their foods or they can only have their favs every once in a while. However, I look at it like this. Any kind of plan from Weight Watches to the Zone limits or tells you to watch what you eat. If it makes me gain or causes me discomfort, I ask myself, how bad do I want this. It has worked like a charm. Try carrots, if you don't find yourself gaining, getting sick, then it might be great for you. Sometimes you have to experiment to see where your body will allow you to go. If you start gaining, back off and realize that this is a food you can't have all the time but enjoy it occasionally and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Hi There!

I just bought the SBD yesterday and plan to go grocery shopping today. I'm wondering if this really works and once you're off the "book" do you gain all the weight back. I'm hoping to drop, at least, 10 pds. before my step daughter's wedding, which is June 10th.

I have 3 half marathons planned before the full marathon, at WDW, which is in Jan. 07. Iam 50 pds. overweight and have gotten away from exercising....I look/feel like garbage and want to get back down to a healthy weight. I'm hoping that the SBD will help me jump start my motivation

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. :)

Hi, Monte, welcome :welcome: My first suggestion would be to read over as much of the thread as possible. Lot's of good suggestions and advice. Drink plenty of water, stay on Phase 1 and follow it to a T! It get's easier as you go along on the diet. Come back if you have any questions and let us know of your progress!!!! :goodvibes

Welcome Monte !

SBD really works ! I've been at it for a year and a half and I lost about 50 lbs. Had a recent setback and gained back a few because of having lots of extras I knew I shouldn't, but I'm doing a Phase 1 again to jumpstart my healthy habits again.

I started the South Beach diet yesterday :teeth:

I have about 15-20 pounds to lose that have not budged despite the fact that I run about 6 miles/day and eat (what I thought was) fairly well. I lost quickly on Atkins before, but it was SO restrictive that I fell off the band wagon fairly quickly. I'm hoping that I'll have better luck staying the course with SB, as I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that really works for me is lowering my carbs/sugars.

Anyway, day 1 went fairly well with minimal cravings, and I woke up this morning 2 pounds lighter. :) I know this was mainly water weight, but it still gave me the extra motivation to continue on today instead of stopping by Dunkin' Donuts on the way to work! Today I'm feeling a little more shaky and light headed than I did yesterday, but not as bad as it was on the first few days of Atkins when I walked around with a constant migraine for the first week.

Glad to join this thread as I'm sure I'll need some extra encouragement through the next several months!

Jynohn, welcome!!! :cool1: Happy to have you here! Read some of what the other's have done, and I've posted many threads with receipes to be found to help with the weight loss. I think you'll do well on the Beach :cloud9:

Well I bought all the food needed for phase I and was able to walk 4.28 miles :cool1:

I have a 10k at the end of the moth and 2 more half marathons during the summer.......then off to WDW in Jan., for the full marathon! :woohoo: I was able to complete the half marathon this past Jan. and had a ball. Anyone else planning to participate at WDW?

I wish I could, but hate running with a passion!!! Good luck to you though! Keep snacks around, they come in handy................

I did the full two years ago, and the half last year with DH a month after he came home from Iraq. We had so much fun! We're on the fence about signing up this year because we're not sure if we'll have someone to watch DD (6) while we're running. Hopefully we'll know for sure before registration closes. We are doing the Disney triathlon in September though :teeth:

One thing I was worried about with this diet is that I wouldn't have the energy to train. When I tried Atkins last year I literally struggled to get out of bed, I was so tired. But I'm on day 3 of South Beach now and haven't felt that way at all. In fact, got up at 4:30 this morning to run, and it felt great!
I was down another pound this morning, so that was motivating. I know the weight loss will slow down after the first week or two, but I'm really enjoying the rapid weightloss while it lasts!

Well I'm not a runner either, but I do love to walk, so maybe you could walk the half? It's alot of fun :goodvibes

OK, I've just finished day 2 of SB Phase 1 and don't know where else to get experienced SB information. Here's the problem, I've always turned to certain foods when a GI bug hits - none of which are compatible with SB Phase 1. They now call the GI bug diet BRAT for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. I have a reaction to artificial sugars and can't consume diet sodas or SF jello. What works for your upset stomach etc. that is compatible with SB Phase 1? Today I ate half an avacado and some hummus as "subs" for banana and applesauce. I'm thinking chicken broth for breakfast if eggs aren't in the cards? TIA for any advice that may help me get through a possible impending bug without losing my SB Phase 1 ground. :listen:

Linda,

I've been lurking. Just wanted to say if you can find acidophilus tablets they will help with tummy bugs tremedously. Its also found in yogurt so if you can handle that go for it. Dairly isn't normally a good idea but the acidophilus helps you digest the "milk"(lactose) and balances your good bacteria in your tummy and intestines to help speed recovery of GI troubles.

Hope you are well soon and find a suitable way to avoid those things.

I've got acidopholus and various digestive enzymes and ginger tea which do help, thanks. I just wish I could find something to eat with the tummy soothing feeling I'm used to from applesauce in jello, ginger beer or Dr Pepper (both with real sugar and/or fruit juice and no corn syrups), brown rice, or bananas without busting Phase 1. Best so far was avocado followed by lemon/lime (natural flavor - no sweeteners) sparkling water and sugar free peppermint candy. Still looking for more ideas on what to do when there is no way your body can handle anything you have to chew or digest much but your body is more hungry than queasy and needs food. I'm OK now, but would like more "just-in-case" tools in my toolbox. Or is my body just so out of whack that I'm the only one to whom this happens? (Yikes)

Linda, I wish I could help. I've never experienced any of that! I'm hoping so others will check in on the board and read and give you some advice. Take care of your self!!!

I had no idea that there was this type of board on the DIS boards and I am thrilled! My DH and I have been on SBD since the day after Easter and I lost about 10 lbs. so far, but have not lost since starting phase 2. I think that I am eating too many "good carbs", but I am having trouble figuring out what I should be eating daily as far as carbs. We do not really follow the meal plans in the book, so is there a limit on the number of good carb foods allowed in phase 2?
Any advice to help increase my weight loss is appreciated! My goal is to lose about 10 more lbs!

Laura

I'm struggling with Phase 1, so take my input with a grain of salt. The SB Diet book that I've got talks about adding a fibrous fruit (apple, berries) first on Phase 2 and only then with lunch or dinner. Breakfast sugars cause a bigger insulin reaction than sugars later in the day due to sleep/wake cycles of hormones. Per book, carbs are supposed to be added slowly and with awareness: if you still lose weight after adding fruit, then you can add one slice of whole grain bread at lunch or dinner but not both. Phase 2 doesn't sound that great when I read the details of the examples given.
I'm looking forward to the fruit (Phse 2 in 7.5 days for me) - I plan to use it as my snack in the afternoon with a protein. One problem I think I'm having losing weight (am losing in Phase 1 but less than I should be and such a miniscule percentage of what I need to lose) is that I'm substituting the carbs I can't have with sugar-free treats. I am staying within the suggested limit of 75calories of SF treats, but I never used to eat dessert and candy every day. I want to get off this slippery slope, even if it is a "sugar free" slope. Anyway, since I've been researching Phase 1 and Phase 2, that's what I know. Hope it helps.
Don't know any specifics about your situation, but I'm also looking into combining SB plan with suggestions from Mary Shomon's The Thyroid Diet and Peter D'Adamo's Eat Right 4 your Type. It's quite a juggling act, but I'm hopeful...

Welcome Laura! Phase 2 is rather difficult. I have always said that I didn't follow the phase 2 quite well. My good carbs came from lower carb veggies, La Tortilla Factory tortillas or Mission tortillas and I never added fruit back. Then again I am not a big fruit lover. I did find a wonderful grain bread that is 5 grams of carbs per slice. I would use that for hamburgers and such. I like the wayt he book was before all the changes and I ended up doing a SBD/Atkins mix most of the way. If you have a whole food market anywhere, go look for the bread, it works wonders. I went light on the popcorn and only ate it as an occasional snack. I ate oatmeal once a week to every two weeks. I ate what would help me continue to lose the weight rather than follow the book and the "suggestions" to the T. I think that is exactly what it is, a suggestion of what you can begin to add. However when I stopped losing or creeping back up, I cut out that food. Why do I tell you that? He tells you that when you begin to gain, cut back on the carbs or go back to phase 1. I think what he doesn't want to say is that carbs are really the culprit and you should really watch how much of them yo consume on a daily basis. This is just my opinion because I had to make the plan work for me.

Hellow Linda, how are you doing on phase 1? Once I got the hang of it I was alright. It became very easy to eat like that. Heck, sometimes I find that even while maintaing, I will do it without even trying!!!!

Thanks for the help sm4987 and DVCkidsMOM, I am going to try to lean more toward phase 1 this week and try to only add one wrap or yogurt a day. My problem is that DH & I bought the SB pizza, wrap kits, cookies, meal replacement, and cereal bars. I think that I figured since the box said phase 2, it was alright to have, but I realize only ONE time a day at first. Thanks for your help. Fruit doesn't excite me in the least and I never ate it much before either!
Laura

Laura, anytime. I hve red on other SBD boads and threads that many feel like these pre packaged meals make them stall and even gain some weight. It confuses me because the ingredients on some of the products are things that he tells you not to eat :confused3 I stay far, far away from those except for the bars. The cinnamon vanilla I think it is, is my fav., but with all the sugar alcholos upsets my stomach so I can't eat every much of it.!
