SOUL legend Edwin Starr has died at the age of 61.

The US-born star - known for his hits War and Contact - is thought to have died of a heart attack.

Starr lived for many years in the UK and died at his home in Nottingham, his manager Lilian Kyle said.

Rock singer Suzi Quatro, who has known Starr since she was a teenager in Detroit, led the tributes.

"He was the best. There was nobody better on stage and he was the nicest man you could ever wish to meet," she said.

Starr was born Charles Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee and formed his first group, The Future Tones, in 1957, recording one single before his three-year Army draft.

He was offered a solo deal in 1965. His biggest success came with his outspoken single War, a US number one in 1970 and number three in the UK.

Starr has continued to be a live favourite at soul weekenders. He performed a pair of shows in Stuttgart, Germany, at the weekend.

Rainer Haas, Quatro's husband and the promoter of the Stuttgart shows, said: "He was just superb. He played to 16,000 people over the two nights and he put on a great show.

"The shows were actually recorded for television so we will have an enduring memory of how brilliant he was live."

He was a legend. And yes I did NOT know Suzi Quatro knew him.

My 9 yr old son had asked for his CD last Christmas. He listens to it quite a bit. Actually he asked for it two yrs in a row, I finally got it for him last christmas. He was giving up!

I remember a concert he gave back in NY in a club I went to about 15 years ago. Most of the kids in the audience didn't know his songs so he ended up singing mostly to my table who LOVED his stuff. I particularly liked 25 Miles.

His signature song from 1970 is quite an anthem these days:

War
what is it good for?
absolutely nothing
Say it again
War-I despise
'Cos it means destruction
Of innocent lives
War means tears
To thousands of mothers how
When their sons go off to fight
And lose their lives
I said
War-huh
It ain't nothing but a heartbreak
War
Friend only to the undertaker
It's an enemy of all mankind
the thought of war blows my mind
war has caused unrest within the younger generation
induction then destruction, who wants to die?
It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War
it got one friend that's the undertaker
War has shattered
Many young men's dreams
made him disabled, bitter, and mean
life is much too short and precious to spend fighting wars these days
war can't give life, it can only take it away
It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
We've got no place for it today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's just got to be a better way
War
War
War-Good God, yall
Give it to me, yeah
What is it good for?
