Howdy, Folks!

I've been a DVC member for almost 2 years and I'm still trying to get the hang of the banking system. In my ignorance, I forgot to bank 34 points that went unused this year. They need to be used by the end of this month or I'll lose them (yeah, right! I can go to WDW on a moments notice. I Wish!!)

The MS rep told me that I can use my one time "exception" to save these points, but this means I would NEVER be able to use this "exception" again.

So, my question is: Should I just lose these points (so that if some day I may need to "save" more than 34 pts.) or should I save them and vow to be extra vigilant in my banking going forward. BTW, we're going to OKW in Oct/Nov so they WILL be used this year if I save them.

Thanks for any advice!

Happy Day!

You will really have to make that choice yourself. But if it were me I would use the one time banking exception and just be very careful from now on. Since I only have 300 points a year, 34 is a lot to me. We had to use our exception when we purchased because we bought a February use year in September and were already past the banking deadline. I haven't had any problems with banking on time since then. I use a spreadsheet to keep track of my points. It includes banking dates with warnings.

It's a tough decision to make. Banking rules can be a bit confusing, so I can understand how it happened.

Eva, I'm surprised that they made you use your exception, (unless it was a resale). When we did an add-on through Disney, they made an exception but it definitely was not my "one-time" option. I made sure of that.

As a matter of fact, the CM at MS who advised me told me to contact my sales rep as it has to be done through them. He wasn't familiar with it, and was very skeptical, but, once he followed through, it worked out perfectly.

You can try to rent them - on the rental site here - for less than the $10 I would only try for a couple weeks - then bank them (but I really believe you could rent them).

you never know what problems you might have in the years away - all 39 years - so I won't use my one time banking right now.

I would also suggest that you rent them over on the rental board. Since they are "distressed" points, ones that need to be used by 7/31, you won't get $10 per point for them. You will probably be able to get at least $5, which will pay for your dues. Good luck!

BTW, a DISer came up with a great program that will help you track your points. It's available here: DVC Manager

We decided to "save" our points and use our one time exception. If we weren't planning a trip this fall, I might have tried to rent them. I never even considered that option until I found these boards. At least now I'll know where to turn if I ever end up in this predicament again.

Thanks again!!

No, we didn't buy a resell. But when we bought back in 96 we didn't know much about DVC or we would have argued the point. They did make it clear that we were using our one time exception and had us sign a paper for banking that stated that we understood we were using our one time exception. It really shouldn't be a big issue unless we make a reservation late in the year that we have to cancel. I will probably be sweet talking MS if that ever happens!
