Sorry, but no need to sell "Cosmo" magazine for all to see at resort gift shop...

What happened to discussing things with kids? If you don't approve of something on a magazine cover that is the perfect opportunity to open a discussion of why you don't approve. BTW, have you read the objectives for sex ed in your public schools these days? More than I was taught in nursing school about STDs and BC options for my 7th grader. That is why I discuss embarrassing subjects with them, so they know my point of view on the subject instead of what the rest of the world throws at them. And boy do they love it when I find another object lesson and bring up yet another thing they don't want to talk about with mom.

My sentiments exactly. When we disagree, we can't do it politely? Whatever.

I wish they wouldn't even sell those magazines, but someone is buying them so............

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a woman from Indonesia that attends my church. She is 29 and when she lived there, she was an architect. She was from a city over there, can't remember which one, but she wasn't out in the country. They moved here about 5 years ago. She commented that she was amazed to find so many conservative people like herself here, since the movies/magazines from the U.S. had them believing we only care about sex and how many partners can we get. It didn't give her a good impression. But she loves it here now that she knows she doesn't have to be a swinger. :rotfl:

I got the same when I commented on the insulting slogans on the T-shirts Disney is hawking at the Tower of Terror gift shop - "Will you hold my beer while I do your girlfriend" isn't exactly what I want my teen to wear.

Oh, please tell me you're joking or misinformed or something. I can't believe that.

What in the world does that have to do with ToT??? :confused3

Offtopic but........I discuss everything with my DD. In fact, we have an overnight every year, just her and I. We do some fun things together, like shopping and stuff, but there is also time for some "girl talk". We've discussed things that she would rather me NOT talk about, but it's out there and I want our family to be the "filter" that it goes thru first. But why does that mean that I want her to be hit in the face with it over and over again? I hate it now, I can't believe how I'm going to feel when my DS6 is that age.

Geesh....sorry I mentioned it.

I think many of you are missing my point, and it has nothing to do with Cosmo itself or what it puts on its cover. Sometimes I buy it myself. My thought was that I was surprised to see it displayed as it was in a Disney gift shop. That's it. Nothing else. I love that "sheltered" feeling I get at Walt Disney World, and when the real world makes an appearance, I guess I make it more of an issue than it needs to be.

Please don't turn it into a debate on what our kids see and hear in the real world, what they know and don't know, and how we all parent them. I am not trying to hide anything from my children. I deliver babies for a living, trust me, they know plenty.

If Disney is going to hold itself out as the paragon of family vacation entertainment, they should be more sensitive to this kind of stuff. Remember Disney is famous for attention to detail. They missed the detail in this instance IMO.

Just because they sell Cosmo at other places commonly visited by children, like the supermarket or pharmacy doesn't make it appropriate for a "Disney" resort gift shop - again IMO.

I also disagree with some of the tone used by some in responding to the OP. I got the same when I commented on the insulting slogans on the T-shirts Disney is hawking at the Tower of Terror gift shop - "Will you hold my beer while I do your girlfriend" isn't exactly what I want my teen to wear.

I agree with this poster. Well, I don't know about the Tshirt at ToT, but if that is true, then that is awful.

I am no prude...I have been known to *gasp* watch a naughty movie now and then, and read magazines like Cosmo (not Cosmo itself...that magazine is just too cheesy! LOL.) There are plenty of things that we run into in the ouside world that I'd rather my DD (she is almost 8) not see, but I know that's just the way life is, and this is the world we live in. BUT, that said, I don't expect to have that stuff condoned by places such as WDW, her school, etc.

Mom of sleepybashful and babydoc-I like your idea of the overnighter with your DD. That is sweet. And yes, that is how I feel...I hate that our kids are just slapped in the face with all this stuff all the time.

As a Mom I can understand how you feel. Personally, I agree with the other posters in that they see it in the supermarket and it doesn't even interest them. I also can't lie- I love Cosmo!!! princess:
I dont think of Cosmo as a "bad" magazine. I would be offended if they prominently displayed Hustler or Playboy or any of the other porno magazines but I always grab a Cosmo at the airport to read on the plane and I have never even considered that it might be offending anyone. My kids have never been interested in any of my magazines unless they need to cut them up to decorate a shoe box for school. :rotfl:

I've not seen that shirt anywhere on WDW property. The worst I've notice so "I'm With Goofy" etc.

I can see the OP side as a mom to an 11 yo DD. However, I also have a 21 yo DD that we "drag" to WDW for family vacations. Cosmo is a great way to shut her up when we are poolside. Cosmo, for us keeps family harmony. :teeth: She shuts up and stops complaining and the rest of us are blissfully happy. There's 2 sides to everything.

How is sarcasm rude?

Completely off topic here, but sarcasm is defined as "a cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule." (American Heritage Dicyionary) Thus, sarcasm is, almost by definition, rude.

As has been stated earlier, they will see it in the grocery store anyway AND I think it's best not to "shield" kids from reality because it's there. So, I don't really think this is a big deal.

HOWEVER - I would love to not see magazines and newspapers at Disney - I'm there for an escape from reality. It brings the real world to my fantasy. Dirty articles or not. I hate it when they leave a newspaper at my door.....I refuse to read a newspaper while @ Disney. And sexual positions are meant to be tried on vacation, not read about. :-)

I have no issues with it....the Disney name is on many things that aren't so wholesome.

Maybe the kids need to live in a bubble...of course one they can't see and hear out of. I would bet that most kids hear way worse from their friends as school than what is on the cover of cosmo.

I know I may be asking too much, but do the resorts really need to sell Cosmo and other such magazines that boldly announce "30 new sex positions" etc. right at the check out for all to see? I understand I may be a little prudish when it comes to that, but any child who can read couldn't miss it, or the others. I go to Disney (with my 13 year old) to get away from that crap. Anybody else notice that?

I think Disney does a pretty good job of keeping the magazine area isolated so it wouldn't catch the eye of kids. As another post mentioned, there is so much eye candy for kids of all ages (and adults too LOL) that you barely notice they even sell them. Just my opinion. It looks like you stayed at the BC and I do know that when a line forms at the one register, it can snake to where the magazines/sundries are located. The other register is on the food/marketplace side and very far away from it though.

For my part, I am not bothered by the glamour magazines at the checkout in any store. While I abhor the messages they send (that being sexy, looking sexy, and having sex are the only things women should value), I don't find them offensive or inappropriate overall.

Well, the OP felt it was fine to want us all to agree with thier view on "morality" so...IMHO you post something like this on the DIS to create a stir...No other good reason.

Add me to the list of posters who disagree with the OP. Magazines that are displayed at supermarket check out racks and 7-11 don't have to be hidden at WDW.

I agree. We have a 7-11 near us that puts the xxx rated magazines in front of their counter at the level of my 4 year old son!! The only thing blocking his innocent little eyes is one piece of cardboard, which if he is curious enough, can easily take out.
