Well, as I am entering my final stretch of pregnancy, I just am not sleeping well. I was up at about 2:00 am, and got up to get something to drink. My two dogs, Orion and Copper, got up with me and I let them outside really quick. Well, all the sudden, there was growling, clawing, barking and then WHAM....the unmistakable, horrific and disgusting smell came wafting in the house. They have been skunked....I mean directly sprayed.....nailed by the stinky rodent!:scared1:

Those poor dogs...We live in a neighborhood that has its share of wildlife...lots of foxes, coyotes, rabbits... and yes, skunks. We have been wondering if one has been living under our house, and apparently we got our answer tonight...those poor dogs were sneezing, drooling....pretty miserable!

I have to call PetsMart first thing in the morning to get them anti skunked:eek:And I hope the smell leaves the house soon....even Merrick woke up because it smelled...he said, "Uh, oh Momma. Poopie!"

Since I can't sleep, I may as well share this lovely story!;)

UGH!!! Snunk smell during pregnancy! That was one of the worst things I encountered. Good luck with the dogs and getting the smell out of the house. Do you at least have some nice weather to help air it all out?

You poor thing.... I hope you can stay as far away from that smell as possible.. I am sure it can't be very pleasant.

Here's the formula I give all my clients. No matter what you do they will have a faint eau de skunk when they get wet for months to come.

In a gallon of warm water add 1 bottle hydrogen peroxide, 1 cup vinegar, 4 tablespoons baking soda, and 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Sponge this mixture onto the dogs coat until saturated and allow to air dry. Repeat as needed (usually takes 2-3 applications)

Good luck.

Ewww...luckily this has not been something that our dog or us have experienced. I feel terribly for you to have to deal with it plus the last few weeks of a pregnancy!

Oh dear. Worse for you having to deal with this when pregnant! Reminds me of the time when we caught a skunk in our have-a-heart trap (unintentionally). Surprisingly it did not spray when we let it out, but you should have seen the get-up DH had on when tackling the job.

Best of luck to you.

Well, since I am losing the ability to bend down easily;) and wash those stinky buggers myself (DH works nights and got in late this AM), I was able to get an appt at PetsMart for their skunk wash....I hope it works! I gave the recipe recommended to my parents, though, who camp around the west for retirement. Now, the SUV needs to be aired out from the transport! Well, at least the smell in the house is lingering out a bit...not completely gone, but certainly working its way out.

Now to break the news to Copper that he will NOT be sleeping in bed with me tonight!

Should have listend to you first!!! A week later, both the dogs (although the shep more than the little one) still smelled. We followed this recipe, minus the vinegar, and it worked. Wasted $100 at PetsMart....just goes to show that sometimes it is worth it to do it on your own!

Ok, I kow this is weird, but I kinda like the smell of Skunk.

Ohh boy, I sooo sympathize with you.

This happened at our house when I was pregnant with DD, not one, but TWO nights IN A ROW! The first night, our Beagle ran in through the dog door afterward and rubbed herself all over the carpet in our bedroom! The second night at least we were smart enough to have the dog door closed, but it still stunk up the whole house for days.

I was so nauseous for the first 6 months of my pregnancies, I could barely stand to be in my own house. As it was, I had to sleep in the family room (Across the house from the bedroom) for days until the smell dissipated!

Sadly, it has happened a couple of times since as well. As you have already found out, nothing works totally but we have had the best luck with the formula you tried. She still always smells of skunk when she is wet for about 6 months afterward.

I have never smelled Skunk (we don't have them here) what does it smell like?

I am glad you got the smell out! Baking Soda always does the trick, its great for making the fridge smell nice too!

That is tough to describe!!!! Imagine wet, stinky feet...mixed with rotten eggs, last weeks trash and a bit of sulphur. It just smells bad! Considering it is the animals defense mechanism, it has to be bad! (If you ever smell one here in the states, it will be a smell you probably 'know', then never forget!

It was the worst smell to have at 36 weeks pregnant at 2 AM, right after we had the carpets cleaned....:scared1:

I may try to give the Shepard one more dose tomorrow of the bath mixture. He still has a bit of an odor since he's dried, but it is soooooo much better than even this morning!

Sorry you wasted your money at Petsmart -You didn't need it anyway right ?
I had this happen to my dog several times and it never gets much better -
But wanted to say I have tried many formulas and this one does work the best
I was also told to specifically use "Dawn" dish soap -
Oh I hate after you wash them and you kinda smell too-yuck

PS -It could be worse -It didn't happen at my house but my meter reader got skunked herself one early morning
