Sooo... Maybe Next Year?

We've long debated becoming DVC members. We go every year for Christmas and - I know - it's the most expensive time of the year, the highest points, etc. We're sold on it and it seems to work for our family.

We've decided to look into resale. We have our hearts set on either Boardwalk Villas or Beach Club Villas. We have a close family friend who is a DVC member at Boardwalk and loves it. He sold us on Sunday and said that he'd help us out with the resale and all.

My parents are older (60s) and realistically feel as though they can only do Disney another 10-15 years. Boardwalk costs 306 points. We decided that we would maybe do 250 points and borrow from the next year each year. That would deplete us by year 4. We'd take a break that year and do a shortened trip during an off-peak time (or bank those points), then start all over again until we deplete them again.

But here's the thing - we know that you have to book your home resort 11 months out for Christmas week, otherwise you run a very, very low chance of getting it. We figured we'd make our decision by the end of the week and move forward, but now I'm seeing that the process of buying resale takes around 8 weeks. Is this true?

We would rent points, but life is so uncertain. I'm a young professional and think that I may change jobs within the next 6-8 months. There's a small chance - a few things have to happen. I love Disney so much that I've considered putting off changing jobs until early 2017, but then I recognize that Disney will always be there - a job offer may not.

So I guess I'm asking - has anyone ever bought resale (I'm sure some of you have.) Did the process take that long? Should we just rent or stay in a regular hotel and then decide on DVC in a few months? I think when making a purchase this big, it may pay off to have some extra time to weight the pros and cons.

Resale takes so long because Disney shows it's greediness to make money. They are the reason for the long resale purchase time. If you know for sure that BWV is where you want to buy, I would start looking at the different brokers for the contract size with the correct UY.

Thanks for the reply. I figured such was true.

Another idea is to buy a stripped contract without the current year's points since it will be too late to book for Christmas of 2016 when you close. You could pay less per point and be ready to book at the 11 month window for Christmas of 2017.

A good estimate is 3 months from purchase to points loaded. We signed our contract on 10/30 & points were just loaded today, 1/12. I am already a DVC member and have online access. Otherwise, I would have to wait (guessing 1-2 weeks) for the letter in the mail, etc. to get online account set up & use points.

Seems about what both of our contract were.
