I want to introduce my 3 kids (12, 14, 15) to pin trading.
I have read many posts regarding how to buy the pins, ebay scrappers, etc.

What I still don't understand is the trade itself. If the CM has a "special" pin, do you still trade a standard pin for it? Are all trades "one pin for one pin" regardless of value?

The trading will be for fun memories only, not an investment. But I want to explain how it works so they know what to expect when we get there.

Thanks in advance.

When trading with a CM yes, it is simply pin for pin. You give them a pin from your lanyard and let them know which one of theirs you would like in trade.

Pixiewings71, thanks for the quick reply.

You state "when trading with a CM"

Are you implying that there are other trade opportunities at the Parks?

And one other question:
Do most folks who trade pins wear them on a lanyard?
Where else do you wear/carry them?

Thanks!
Joe.

Welcome to pin trading! Remember that having fun is the most important part.

Disney had a website that has a lot of useful information when you're starting out.

Trading with CM is the easiest because they will almost always accept the trade. There are a few limitations:
1. They cannot accept a pin that they already have on their lanyard.
2. They can only accept Disney pins (must have the Disney copyright on the back)
3. Only children can trade with the CMs wearing the green lanyards

Regarding the "other trading opportunities" in the parks and at DTD...there are other guests that bring pins with them to trade with other guests. They are not governed by the same rules as the CMs. So they can refuse your trade, they can ask you to trade more than one pin for one of their's (i.e., you give them two and they give you one), and they can ask you to buy them new pin or pins. While I am sure there are very nice "professional traders", the ones I've run across have always seemed to business-like. They want to get the best (financial) deal possible. So they seem to take the fun out of trading.

Lots of guests wear their pins on a lanyard, but most are not trading with other guests. Wearing the pins is a fun way to show off your collection, but be careful not to lose the pins (the rubber backs can fall off) and others have reported that it can get heavy and make your neck sore.

When you're starting out I would stick with the CMs for trading. It's a lot less pressure and you know that the CM will trade for the pin you or your child wants as long as it meets the rules.

Hit the nail on the head. A CM will ALWAYS trade with you and will never say "nooo... i don't want that one". They have to trade according to Disney law. :)

We wear our pins on lanyards, I usually wear 2, 1 with traders and 1 to show off. :) We also usually have a pin bag with us and we do trade with other park guests. We've been told we are very fun and easy to trade with as we aren't out to get the best "deal" but rather to help others complete sets and to have fun. We normally trade pin for pin (ie Hidden Mickey for Hidden Mickey or Limited Edition for Limited Edition) but sometimes we simply don't see anything the other person has so we will ask for a higher trade (ie 2 Hidden Mickey's for a Limited Edition). It just depends. We've also told people they don't have anything we will trade for but if they go in the store and buy another LE of a similar edition size we will trade, we never pressure anyone tho, if people don't want to trade with us we have no problems with them walking away. As you trade more regularly you will figure out who is better to trade with and who to avoid.
