Any fellow DIS'ers go to Sonography/Ultrasound school or know anyone who has?

I have an appointment tonight to tour the school and get information, but I was just curious if anyone could give me some background information on what to expect.

Thanks!

I don't have any info but wanted to wish you the best of luck!! :sunny:

DW is an OB and swears by her good Ultrasound techs. It can be a great job. Good Luck!!

Thanks. I'm hoping tonight goes well. I am excited to finally be pursuing something i'm very interested in.

Thanks Dan.

I'd really love to hear from someone in this field, so i'm giving this one last bump!

Well, I had my meeting last night at the school. Apparently since I have no prior medical training, the advisor recommended that if I do decide to get into this field, I'd need to really go through the Medical Assisting field first, get some experience with the medical lingo and then segway into the Sonography area once i'm working for an OB/GYN. The Medical assisting would take 9 months, and the Sonography would be another 18+ months.

Although I am still very interested in Sonography, I can't picture taking 11 months of school 4 nights a week to get a Medical Assisting job where i'd be entry level making less than half of what I make now to "pay my dues" so to speak. I'd then have to commit to another two years of school - which I could probably do, however I have a 3 yo at home and just can't imagine taking this time away from him while he's so little.

Well, I guess it's time to rethink my next step.

Get a different opinion from a different school. My sis is an ultrasound tech and she didn't have to be a medical assistant or take that program. She took her generals one year at a community college, waiting to be accepted into the ultrasound program at the best school up here. They only take 10 students per year for that school in it's ultrasound program. The second year was all the medical stuff related directly to ultrasound.

My sister enjoys her job, is good at it and is in high demand from recruiters.

Look for a school that's accredited by ARDMS ( I think that's the right acronym - it's an accreditation society for diagnositic radiologic technicians I think)

Good luck.
