Thanks for all the support. I have written letters to the Executive Director and President of the local SPCA regarding this issue. I hope she does the right thing and responds back with her comments.

I will let you know what's going on.

Thanks again! :)

Definately keep us posted.... Good Luck!!!!

Joshua was fine with it. He knew why we were going and all that. He was shy with the doctor at first, but he was chattering away by the end of the visit.

Also, I told her that our regular doctor is out of the country on a tour of duty and that it made me feel more than a little nervous that he wasn't around. She said immediately that I didn't need to worry about anything. She would be monitoring everything closely for the next few months anyway. I can call her office whenever I have a question or a concern. I have no idea what the response would be like if I actually did have to call, but it is nice to hear.

Sounds like HE is pretty comfortable with her too...that's good. Nice to know she is so "open" to having communication with you.... a good doctor really DOES make a difference..... ::yes:: (now let's just hope we don't need to call her  )

I'm going to have to ask for one of those free pass thingys. If Jodie shows up, please tell her I need one. ;)

Yesterday was the big appointment with the Pediatric Neurologist. Everything went well. Mostly, we just gave her his medical history, the copies of all the tests they have done on him so far, and what led up to him being referred to her. She gave him a basic physical and that was it as far as this initial appointment.

He will have an MRI, under sedation because of his age. He will have an EEG. We will meet with her again in 2 months to discuss the results of the tests.

She wants to take him off Dilantin and put him on Topamax. That will be a very long slow process. I will start him on Topamax in 10 days and he will be on BOTH drugs for about 2 months. The Topamax has to build up in his system before he can be weaned from the Dilantin.

The reason for the delay in starting him on Topamax is that she fully understands that I want to be the one administering the new drug and she has given us the green light to head to Daytona next weekend. Yes, people, one week from today I should be making my way to the track to watch cars drive in circles.

Some rules about seizure prone children that I have to live by:
-I have to be the sleep police. Tired brains are more likely to seize, so he must get a full night sleep each and every night.
-He can't be left alone in the bath. If a seizure hits, he could drown before we knew something was wrong.
-He can't climb trees. If a seizure hits, the fall could be dangerous.
-He has to wear a helmet to ride a bike, but kids are suppose to do that anyway.
-He can't ride rollercoasters. The experience is a seizure trigger and rollercoasters can't be stopped if he has one.
-I now have to keep with me at all times a dose of Diastat. It is an emergency use rectal gel for treating a seizure that lasts more than 5 mins, if 911 hasn't responded in that length of time. His school will get a dose as well.
-The treatment of seizure: Turn him on his side. Keep the area around him clear (so he doesn't hurt himself). Do not put anything in his mouth. Call 911. Make sure he is breathing. Time the length of the seizure if possible.

Hey, doesn't that sound like fun!

He will be on medication for a MINIMUM of 2 years. Once he goes 2 years without a seizure, then they will re-test him. If his tests come back normal at that time, then we will discuss weaning him from medication.

She was a very nice lady and it was a very reassuring appointment. I feel like we have a plan in place. One of the best things she told me was that there is no need to try and cause a seizure for them to know what his triggers are. I was really worried about that.

So, that is all I know right now. We don't have the MRI or EEG scheduled yet, but they told me it will probably be a month or so.

That's probably way more than you wanted to know, but it helps me to sound it all out. Thanks for all of your concern. It really helps.

Tricia, no roller coasters? :scared1:

Sounds like a pretty big list, but doable. Although I find the rectal gel a little daunting. ;)

Sounds like the neurologist knows what she's doing.

I meant to ask, are seizures something that children can grow out of?

I am laughing about the whole saturday wal mart valentine section.
:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

i should just fed ex a box to Georgia.
:lmao: :lmao:

okay , gonna do this just once.
and Tricia, I care about you.

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???????????????????????

OK, this thread actually stresses me out sometimes.... if anything can't live without my sage advice or comments ;), please PM me. I do respond to PMs better than this thread ....

OK, first the show ... It was me, mom, and sissy. Sissy hated it. Mom liked it but it was not her favorite Disney show by any means. I really enjoyed it. I had a tear in my eye at the end. We had great seats for the show. We had a great dinner before hand (Tony's on 43rd St) which included a pitcher of white sangria which sissy and I split. Yum. The children who played Jane and Michael Banks, my mom and I thought, were wonderful. So talented. Sissy thought they overacted, but they had huge parts and were really great, so mom and I told Sissy she was crazy. Here's the only thing though ... I hate the city. I do. I hate that people approach you left and right asking what you're doing and trying to get you to change your plans. I hate that people tried to recruit me into Scientology when all I really wanted to do was get to the Swatch store. I hate all the people who are asking you to buy stuff or give to charity. Do I look like the person who wants to buy a bumper sticker that says "Cheney is Satan?" Do I? Really? I also hate that City feeling. You know when you come home, and you still feel the "city" on you? So, in short, I wish the restaurant and play were a block away from my little suburban home.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I can see it . you wanted a (insert word here) box of valentines and 5 million people were in that section.
the store was busy and you just wanted to go home.
all you could think was " (insert lots of favs here) and I am having a rum and coke tonight."

I am funning with you girlfriend. You do know that , right?

Tricia, no roller coasters? :scared1:

Uh...I forgot to ask about the rollercoaster...."no rollercoasters" for how long?? EVER?!

Glad you liked the show...and the restaurant. Sorry you hated the city.... And, in a perfect world, yes...the theatre WOULD be a block from your home  (Still...something you did with them and will always have that memory of! ;) ) (Oh...and ya shoulda told the bumpersticker dude that you don't drive.... )

 :headache: :confused3 i am dumbfounded by their buffonery

if you were interested in a certain breed, there are many rescue groups that specifically want households w/o children...

not that the dogs are vicous per se; moreso, the animals were 1st owned by negligent owners, or those who could train/handle a strong willed dog (as many purebreds tend to be)

in Pittsburgh there are probably 3 or 4 different animal shelter groups, perhaps you could try another in the area with better success. Unfortunately, i do know that telling them a cat or dog would be an "outside animal" will put the kabosh on you. Evidently, they didn't hear you say - part of the time.
hoping it all works out for you:wizard:

jodie - very good choices, thought of echo & the bunnymen (more of my oldest DSs group lol)

my bling:goodvibes

this one so you can see the color - blue/turning to purple when in the right light

i need to dip my hands in the paraffin wax thing i have stuffed somewhere, oh so dry & winter's end is nowhere in site.

i bought him an air hammer & wrench @ home depot today, had gift cards;)

yet more drivel from me that i forgot earlier

jodie - not the coveted 40% off code...good on a Value Resort stay w/free PH & WP options, still a deal $95+ pp

marci - i had 5 stitches when i broke my big toe, thought i'd pass out:eek: ; cannot imagine sitting still for that many.

DH has "laid down" (how's that for an ephemism:rolleyes: ) 2 bikes; both times when a motor vehicle ran into him:eek: in traffic; he was stopped once & got hit from behind the 2nd time. He wasn't assigned fault, has quite a case of perm. road rash though.

Joke a nurse told me once in the ER:

what do you can a motorcyclist without a helmet?

an organ donor:rolleyes1

(said nurse was a guy who rides)

Wow, that is beautiful, Janet!

jodie - thanks, he wound up picking an entirely different piece out.

i'm confused (again) you went into the big city & saw which show? ps, i hate NY, only went twice, thought i'd die in the garment district - crazy cab drivers:headache:

However, with him, you can add shock when they handed us our copy of the bill. His eyes did the big-wide-as-saucers thing. As soon as we were in the elevator, he said, "Four hundred dollars? For an office visit? I don't want to know what the rest of this is going to run us..."

When Eric had his 7 teeth out this summer, we went to the oral surgeon beforehand for a consult. I guess everywhere before when I've done consults, it was a "free, to get your business" thing. I was amazed to get a bill for $100 - I mean all the guy did was look at what the orthodontist recommended, say "yep, I can do that" and send me out to talk to his staff about scheduling and billing! I thought they'd at least apply it towards our $2200 bill for getting the teeth pulled, but nope! :confused3

oh and todd, i can write the note as your neighbor..........:rolleyes1

I was thinking the same thing. We could all write Todd letters of recommendation from around the country! Probably confuse the shelter how he had so many good friends from so many different places!

Rose, I don't think the teacher is flirting; I just think he's probably excited that a parent shows genuine interest. Band/music programs can be among the first to be cut if there are budget woes. Pessimist in me thinks he wants to keep on your good side for support should it ever come to that.

You are making me want to crank up the stereo. I can just hear Miss Gemma and Miss Katie going New Order???? Psychedelic Furs????? Who are they????!!!

I agree with you as far as the teacher. In kindergarten, all the parents hovering all over the teachers probably drives them crazy. But by middle and high school, I think they really appreciate parents who actually support them and care about their kids' education. Even if you can never help out in the classroom or don't go go PTA meetings or send enough cash for fundraisers, I think just letting the teacher know you appreciate what they're doing (and how they're helping your child if they do) can mean as much to them as any of that.

Sorry - but I've never heard of any of them either!! :rolleyes1 And I don't think it's because I fall into Gemma or Katie's age group! Did I mention I was musically impaired!

FYI...
Never, never, never... under any circumstances... attempt to buy Valentines at Wal-Mart on the Saturday before Valentine's Day.

Okay, I'll see your Walmart on Saturday before Valentine's and raise it to the perfume section at a fancy department store at the only mall in town with a 15 year old boy choosing perfume for his girlfriend after having said DS drive you there in the traffic and around for 15 minutes beforehand finding a parking place! :scared1:

At least you probably don't STILL STINK!! I don't know how anyone can pick out perfume . Your nose just shuts down after about the second one. And $52 for a 4 ounce bottle! Let's just say, he owes me more than just the cash!

Funniest part was after we'd decided on one. While he was ringing it up, even though we were using the sample cards, I'd still gotten some on my hands, so I used their display bottle of lotion to rub on my hands to try to get the perfume smell off. Well, my hands turned all funny colored - swirls of red, green, blue and purple! Sales guy waiting on us (who had to have been about 22) totally freaks out - like "OMG, you're having a reaction!" Runs and gets me water and kleenex and hand sanitizer! It was really funny! :rotfl2: Meanwhile, DS is just cringing in embarassment! Evidently, the perfume and the lotion weren't meant to be mixed! ;)

Then I got home to discover my jury questionnaire in the mail. Oh, joy! Who wants to bet that I'm one of the lucky ones to get selected to serve for one week (as it said) sometime in April, May or June!? I did emphasize on the online questionnaire that I am hearing disabled and that they'd need to provide written transcripts of everything said. Hopefully that'll discourage them!

Well, we're off to church. Eric is playing the mass today so it shouldn't be too bad. Always fun to watch him!

marci - i had 5 stitches when i broke my big toe, thought i'd pass out:eek: ; cannot imagine sitting still for that many.

The bad part about it was that my folks were out fishing. The babysitter was stuck with a screaming, hysterical kid, along with my younger brothers who were 1 and 6 at the time. No car, no cell phones, not even a regular phone. I have no idea how long it was before they came back in and I was taken to the hospital. I do remember the babysitter soaking washcloths in water and giving them to me to clench my teeth down on rather than screaming! Not a great experience overall!

On a different note, the tanzanite is beautiful! I do remember them pushing it too on our cruises, but never really looked into or at any of them! Maybe I should have!

Sorry, Janet, we went to see Mary Poppins. Disney Visa was offering 30$ off tickets. Still was 90$ + 7$ service fee, but still. Thought it was a good show. :thumbsup2

Ah, Marcie, no worries about not knowing those bands. I am showing my age in that they were popular at the college scene in the early 90s (preppy colleges anyway).

I am off to shower. Mike and I are having a date night at our favorite restaurant. The usual hostess sent her kids to WDW with her in-laws while her and her hubby are in Key West. Thought that was cool! I get very excited to hear the specials. Hope they're good tonight!

I need everyone's opinion.

I just got an email from a friend saying they have a new grandchild with first and middle names Ellery Londan. However, no mention of the sex. Do you think it is a girl or a boy? I have no clue.

ps....the ring is gorgeous!

Okay...so Jennifer is sleeping in.....thanks Todd....

Gettin' ready to go to work......

Barb - check back - I said I was taking today off (at least from the wakeup call). I did go to work, but was really lazy today and just could not get movin today.

THANKS TODD - FOR THE BACKUP TO THE BACKUP.:)

Yesterday was the big appointment with the Pediatric Neurologist. Everything went well.

Glad to hear this Tricia.

Gladder to hear this.:cool1: :cool1:

OK...I have a rant that I need to get off my chest...bear with me.

My neighbor and I went to the SPCA this morning to adopt a dog for me.
After going over the application and asking more questions, he looks me in the eye and said he would have to DENY the adoption. I was floored as was my neighbor. When I asked why, he said dogs should never be left outside due to the risk of running away, biting someone, neighbor complaint, etc.

Thanks for listening.

This is the most riddiculous (sp) thing I've ever heard. Your dog would be in your FENCED yard, and that was not good enough.:confused3 Sorry, pets can be great company.
