I'm not sure how much I've said about DS15's back either. Several weeks ago, just at a practice, he came home from soccer saying that his back really hurt. It kept hurting, so a few days later he went and saw the trainer, who basically told him to rest it a couple days. After another week plus, it still hadn't gotten any better and his coach told him to go to the doctor. Unfortunately the doctor he recommended was off for the rest of the week (last Thu), so we saw another doc instead.
This guy said that he'd pulled a muscle and that he needed to rest it COMPLETELY - do NOTHING for a week - only some stretches he gave him but no running, no bending, no anything. Completely freaked DS out, saying things like "if you do anything, your back may never recover". Well, DS did that Thursday through Tuesday, skipped 2 soccer games (this was ruining his life) and felt NO better.
So I called and got in with the first doctor yesterday, who basically told us everything the first doc said was wrong. DS's muscles were fine, they took x-rays, and his spine was somehow out of alignment. Basically, if your spine is like a zipper, it got "zipped" wrong and missed a tooth and a couple of the bones are shifted into the wrong place. It was really weird - he put 2 fingers on the small of DS's back, one on each side, and had DS bend over. One finger moved about 2 inches - the other not at all. So all his bending, etc., is completely stressing just one side of his back.
So apparently the solution is physical therapy to work the back into the right place. We had our first session today which went well. Doc also has him on large amounts of Naproxin (sp?) to relax the muscles around the spine and allow it to shift back, while the first doc adamantly refused to allow him any meds. Rest doesn't make a difference and DS can go back to playing tomorrow. Of course now DS is furious that he skipped 2 games that he didn't have to - especially since his team lost their first game of the season 4-3 on Tuesday. And of course he KNOWS that if he'd been able to play that they would won!
