Something About Nothing............ #14

Not quite, however, I did festoon my own Godzilla with reindeer antlers. I tend to decorate a bit outside the box in our den where I stuff all the off-the-wall presents our DSs buy us. Full disclosure, I am fond that monster lol.

He shoo’d them out after midnight, very little left overs and both the red sangria and hot cider/rum punch I made vanished. He was supposed to come over today, begged off, said he was going to sit on couch with the cats and watch football all day.

That is an early weekend run, especially in inclement weather

Sadly, not under the best of circumstances. Times like that makes you appreciate family pulling together to support each other.

my parents house rule was we had to try “it”. As in a full meal. If we didn’t want it going forward, there was always the alternative menu: peanut butter & white bread, of which I am quite fond of, probably from eating it so often.

I like my chicken salad pretty much the same way…Hellman’s, celery and either chopped pickles or dried cranberries tossed into the mix. Has to be on basic white bread, not a bun.

I’ve been hitting up the early deals, hoping WM+ rolls out video games on the wish lists I have. Last year the savings were enough to more than cover the membership in one day.

Weather forecast to be rough here that day, may just do my shopping on the internet.

That’s a lot of snow in my book

There are very few things that cheez whiz can’t make better … except a steak hoagie…just say no to ‘wit. Lol

I always think your decorations for any season deserve a post all of their own!

Glad your boy`s celebration went well, he does such a good job of it and not many could do that amount of folks.

Yes, family support is priceless. I`m so proud of our son in everything he does and he was a tower of strength at the service.

I love cranberries in anything, but spicy chicken salad calls for dried and sweetened cranberries, perfect combination.

You know you lost me at peanut butter lol......

McAlisters is a restaurant. Their main items are sandwiches, soups, and baked potatoes.

You may know dirty Santa by another name. Everyone brings a wrapped gift then they all draw numbers. The first person opens a gift. The second person can either open a gift or take what the first person has. The next person either opens a gift or takes one from one of the other people, etc.

Today I called the number left on B’s car yesterday and this time someone answered. He was very apologetic and said he was having issues with his phone yesterday. He said he was visiting from out of town and his father, who has Parkinson’s disease, was the one who scratched the car. I don’t think the damage is worth repairing, but dh wants to take it to a body shop next week and see if the scratches can be buffed out.

We call it Secret Santa over here, always has been known as that. Thankfully we all respected each other enough to not give crappy gifts, so everyone got something quite nice especially among friends. It`s a nice thing to do when there are a lot of folks, everyone pulled a name out of the hat and you didn`t reveal to anyone who you were buying for, one of our group of friends do it every year and it`s a £50 ($63) limit which means you can buy something rather nice without going over the top and no one cheaps out.

Hope the scratches can be buffed out of your daughters car.

Time has gotten away from me this week and I am sure all the homies have been busy making your holiday plans.

Wishing all have a feast with family and dear friends on Thursday.
Hope all the homies will drop in and share how their holiday went.
Do remember the homies that come late will be called for the clean up job.

Mr Mac and I plan to have lunch at a Chinese eatery on Thursday.

We always say can’t go wrong to eat at the chinese restaurant.

We take our time and graze.

Love a Chinese Buffet! Hope you both enjoyed it.

Happy Thanksgiving!! May everyone have a day worth being thankful for.

About to get started with last minute decorations.

24+ bird, 12 pound ham, chess bars, 2 stuffings, 3 bags collards with ham hocks from us. Guest are bringing potluck, so properly dessert heavy.
Chocolate fondue goes out at noon cheddar, marshmallows, fruit.

That sounds a lovely get together DJ.

We never do fondue but our cheese plates are very popular over here for those of us not so sweet toothed.

Just checking in to wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving with lots of good food and family and friends. We had our traditional dinner at my son and daughterinlaws. We all bring something to share and I brought dressing and glazed sweet potatoe slices. It was a very nice time to visit with family.

My brother, who is very ill, had his dinner brought in by his step daughter. He lives in Tn which is about 1000 miles a way from us, so we are glad he gets help from her. She has been doing a lot to take care of him during this difficult time.

It's horrible to be so far away from loved ones, but we will be visiting him when he feels up to it.

Take care all,

ruth

Hope you managed to have a lovely time on Thursday despite your brother`s condition, and yes, it must be a relief knowing his step daughter is doing so much for him. Yes it is horrible to be so far away from family especially around health issues, but, you`ll see him soon ruth ❤️

I do like the sound of those sweet potato slices!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and are all recovering from the food coma that seems to happen as well ;)

Is anyone heading out to do some Black Friday shopping????? Probably heading out tomorrow to do hopefully get some xmas shopping done.

Weather is icky gross cold combined with blowing snow :furious: I don't understand how it can be -30C / -22F with snow falling by the bucket. I think we have more accumulation than we had in all of last year. I want this year subscription to winter to do done now - thanks

I'm tired. This week has been dragging. I am ready for it to be done. I was trying to come up with what to make for dinner tonight. I'm tired. I think whatever dh's cc will buy is what's for supper ::yes::

Well, off to complete payroll, get things organized for our weekly booking meeting, and finish another orientation binder for another new hire that starts Monday - as usual...only a casual who probably won't pick up ever :sad2:

Anyways - have a great day everyone!

That is cold!!!

I do like the meme...sums up right now how I feel about certain people and I`m sure they know who they are! I`m like, honey get a life, I have a very, very low tolerance for idiots at the best of times but right now, patience is limited.

Hope you have a lovely weekend Pumpkin and stay warm and cosy, we had a hard frost all this past week up in Scotland, but now we`re home it`s milder, not what you`d call warm at all but above freezing is always nice :sunny:

Not me. I worked in retail for 6 years, so I avoid Black Friday shopping. However, I did place 2 online orders today.

I never go near sales at the best of times, but retailers over here have been making Black Friday a thing over here for about the last 10 years or so, not interested as it`s usually rubbish. I remember one year a large grocery store had huge tv`s on offer, I doubt even Taiwan had heard of the brand, but folks were fighting over them as though their life depended on it. Crazy. And yes you have to feel for all retail staff dealing with idiots like this.

Online ordering is much nicer.

Made it back last night after being back home to Scotland for my brother in law`s cremation.

Very, very emotional time, but they did him proud and it was a lovely service with a huge turnout. It was a very cold but beautiful day, the type of day he loved as he could get out on the golf course, he did love his golf. We`ll all miss him so much. And I was very proud of my sister, my niece, nephew and his wife along with my brother in law`s sister who managed to get through one of the hardest things to do in life, say goodbye to a loved one.

Afterwards we all went back to a lovely place to celebrate his life and managed to catch up with some relatives we hadn`t seen for the longest time, and of course folks from that area I grew up who hadn`t seen me for years either. Again, my sister did him proud with that too.

We did meet up with one cousin, we are very close to his dad who is my favourite uncle, but I hadn`t seen this cousin since I was 10 and he was 8, we chatted like we had just seen each other last week, same with some other relatives too. I guess once you have that connection it never leaves you no matter how young you were when you last saw each other.

Will be a long time to get over this passing, I think anger is setting in there too now which is part of the process, but we`ll get there with the help of friends and family too.

Today we try to do some tree and house decorating, we have four indoor trees and the outdoor one along with the outdoor decorations were done while we were away, haven`t put the lights on yet, but will get round to it. So after breakfast we`ll get started on those, the trees are all up with all the lights, decor and baubles for each tree in bags in the same room, so the hard work is done with bringing them all down and prepping them.

December tomorrow which now does feel as though it has just appeared from nowhere.

Hope you have a lovely Saturday and weekend.

Hope everyone is recovered from Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The chill reached us Thursday night and yesterday in a raw and rainy bluster. 30s to 40s lows and 60s highs this week.
I'm still in shorts and flip flops but most of the rest around here are in full PSL, Uggs and puffer jacket mode🥶.
Very busy but going to try to squeeze in a visit to SW and UO before Christmas to eat festival food and see the decorations.

Good Saturday morning everyone :wave2:

Thank you for the good wishes Robbie, it is very much appreciated, this has been such a shock to us all, he was the last person you would expect to pass.
It is so hard when those unexpected loses of family occur for sure. Continued prayers for your sister and her family and you all.

I’am sure having you all surrounding her during this difficult time has been a comfort to her.

Continued good wishes for your daughter in law and glad to hear your husband is home, he`ll thrive under your care I am sure!!! And a comfort for you too being able to watch and care for him too.
Thank you.

Not quite, however, I did festoon my own Godzilla with reindeer antlers. I tend to decorate a bit outside the box in our den where I stuff all the off-the-wall presents our DSs buy us. Full disclosure, I am fond that monster lol.
Love the Godzilla with reindeer antlers.

I got the pasta made - but tossed it into the freezer to whop up tomorrow night. Ds's came home tonight after dog sitting at dd house while they were in Toronto for TS. Older ds picked up something on his way home. So, I'll make the pasta tomorrow. We cleaned up on one loaf of bread. I may need to whip up a couple more tomorrow night
WOW…..bread and pasta looks good.

Tonight's menu is salisbury steak with mashed tatters and probably some green beans and salad. A good hearty meal to eat after being outside shoveling more snow. We will have snowfall for the next 5 days apparently :rolleyes2 So far the Farmer's Almanac has been correct. It will be a big snowfall year.
I haven’t made Salisbury steak in years. Sound so good.

three 9+ # turkey breasts already cooked & sliced in fridge & same number of pumpkin pies. Last of halloween chocolate made it way into chunky brownies. Happy to see my cranberry/orange sauce congealed properly. Tomorrow, start the day off with the greens, two different variations of green beans (interestingly, all with copious amounts of bacon), corn pudding with (you guessed it, more bacon).

I caved to making sweet potato soufflé request vs the caramelized slices I prefer. All I need to do is find that recipe. May just grab off the ‘net as not feeling a search.
Sounds like you had a feast.

We always say around here that we see family members we have not seen in years at funerals and weddings. No matter, it is always nice to reconnect with extended family. Glad to hear you were able to see a lot of your friends a family.

The cold weather has reached us here. It was only 28 this morning.

We had a nice Thanksgiving. I did make Turkey and all the trimmings, but on a smaller scale as hubby is still recovering. He is progressing well and even able to to take some steps without walker. All good news.

MRI showed daughter in law has a lot of damage to her knee and will have to have surgery to repair it. Her MCL was damaged as well as her ACL in her knee. The orthopaedic surgeon says he wants the swelling to go down before he does surgery. She is wearing a brace to keep her knee stable until her surgery.

I went to see Wicked at the cinema with family yesterday evening. I enjoyed it. All the seats are recliner seats so with a movie that 2 hours and 20 minutes long it was hard not to close my eyes for a couple minutes. I had not been to this particular cinema in years and marveled at all the things they sell now. There were Wicked themed drinks and popcorn.

I made some Wicked bracelets for the ladies to make it fun. I had some broom charms left over from my Halloween bracelets

Did not get out and do any shopping for Black Friday yesterday. Don’t do much of that anymore. Found a few things at Macy’s Wendnesday. Granddaughter told me it was nuts out yesterday trying to get around the main shopping drag where the Mall and all the other major retailers are located.

I need to get out and pick up a few things from the store this morning. Grandson in law told me that his fellow office employees asked if his grandmother in law would be making Christmas cookies again this year as they loved them last year. So I will pick up some things to make some cookies for the family to share at their various offices. His office party is this Friday so will make those on Thursday so cookies will be fresh.

Will get scooting. Might take a look in Kohl’s haven’t been there in a long time.

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone.

It’s cold where you are DJ and you are in shorts…..

You are amazing….

I would be whining as cold weather is not my thing.

Best thing I have done was to move out of Chicago as their winters I did not enjoy.

I really need to be adopted into Robbie’s family……

She knows how to celebrate the holidays!
(and her food is always home made.)

I open cans for what we call dinner if we don’t buy carry out.
lol….

Hi Mac:

My brother lives in Dickson, Tn, way out in t he country. I get lost every time we visit, LOL.

I appreciate the offer, but he is getting help from friends and his daughter in law right now. If that changes and he needs more help I will surly let you know. That is so generous.
Right now he is awaiting the multitude of test results to see if he will benefit from chemo or if he just needs to get hospice involved. That's where we are at right now. It's a waiting game, but the tests are supposed to be back next Monday, so we will know. It is terminal cancer but he is keeping all options open to make life easier while he is here.

Thanks again for your kind offer:)

ruth

DH asked what I was doing today. Lazy I said. And hope to be, and so far, pretty much yes.

We did go out yesterday. Hit the four stores we were interested in. Only Kohl’s had a long line, and was the one of two was only in there to pick up an online order, and the line for their online pick up had no one in line. Glad, as I think almost any time that I am rarely in Kohl’s, the checkout line is huge. The other two, no wait to checkout. We think many are doing online, though we were at the perfect time, mid morning. As happy, as by the time we were returning home, the traffic around the malls was crazy. At noon, my phone buzzed the outlets closest to us, the highway access to the road to it, was closed, as no parking was available, and not to park at the nearby Costco or Chick unless you going into those, and leave when done. Funny, as the last place we would think to go was to the outlets. We did get lucky, and got a close parking spot at the huge mall. And it was crowded looking, but thankful any lines to get into all the stores were none.

Our Saturday weather. Glorious sunshine, though 33 out. I’ll take it. House is warm, and rocked those sunglasses as we went out to pick up iced coffee a couple of hours ago. And yes, long pants and my lightweight jacket.

Poor older one caught Covid from work. Came home early afternoon yesterday, not feeling well, and took test. I was not surprised it was positive. Gave him those extreme cold and virus pills. And had picked up his medicated nose spray from the pharmacy, after he called and said not feeling well, coming home soon. This morning, while he still was a little congested, he said the pills and spray did a good job. And thankful he’s not running a fever. As long as no fever tonight, he can go back in tomorrow.

Ruth, sorry to hear of brother. Sending good thoughts his way.

Sympathy to Schumi, as sorry to read of brother in law’s passing.

Robo, nice to read DH doing good. Get Well thoughts to him.

Eh, made soup and salad for breakfast, as what all were in the mood for. Did make up some hard boiled eggs as side, and older one asked for chicken rice soup, so that was our soup type. Salad, was choice of dressing, as had vinaigrette or caesar. Lunchtime now, and no one hungry. Think I’ll make some brownies, as sweet after almost healthy breakfast, seems to be a good idea to me.

Time to refill that tea kettle. Ah, was a tea and iced coffee morning. Yay!

Best thing I have done was to move out of Chicago as their winters I did not enjoy.
2 years at Great Lakes going to school in the Navy. 2 years in Belgium. 2 years just outside the Black Forest in Germany.
8 years in West Texas and 2 years in Turkey to counter that .
I just use my immense capacity for denial to imagine myself in the opposite climate of the one I'm in.

I had minor dental work done on the last day my dentist was open before this holiday.

Just had a few almonds minutes ago and now I again I have a sliver of small piece of alone in my gum line.
I will wait it out for when the dentist is back to work on Monday.

Very aggravating for me….

Lynne, you are braver than me to hit store crowds.

I always send Mr Mac with a list to do the shopping.

If he buys a wrong item, I never comment about it.

Figure he would resign if I whined that he screwed up on the grocery list.

Thanks Robbie, it was a lovely service, well as lovely as it can be, yes, family and friends make all the difference at times.

Hope your daughter in law gets some good news about her knee, that can be a painful surgery indeed.

Home made food is the only way I know how to cook!! Can`t beat it.

Schwarzwald is a beautiful area, we know it well and have family there and around many places in Germany too. We used to go skiing with friends to Feldberg, well I didn`t ski, I preferred to sit by the huge open fire in the bar while they all skied, that was anywhere we all went skiing too, it`s not for me, but gorgeous area as is most of Germany.

Belgium I have been to Ostend, Bruges, Flanders, Brussels and of course Spa for the Grand Prix`s. There are some lovely places in Europe, some not so lovely now, I doubt we`ll ever go back, maybe Switzerland and Norway, but that`s about it.

I had minor dental work done on the last day my dentist was open before this holiday.

Just had a few almonds minutes ago and now I again I have a sliver of small piece of alone in my gum line.

Ouch, isn`t there an emergency place you can go to? Here out of hours you call your dentist and it gives you a number to call and they will see you if you`re in pain. Unless you can work it out of course.

Very mild here today, didn`t need any heating on which was good as we were putting up all our trees and most of the decorations, it was nice having all the doors and windows open.

House looks lovely, we`re not putting everything on till tomorrow night, Dec 1st, but apart from a few little additions tomorrow we`re done with the decor for this year, quite impressed with our efforts.

Had two giant steaks for dinner tonight, they were thicker than we realised, but Tom cooked them fabulously!! I think we earned them today, had some wine through the afternoon with a few little nibbles, not too many. It was a nice day though, we enjoyed it as it does take your mind off of things for a time.

Starting to watch our yearly Christmas movies from tonight, not really a Christmas one as such, but Die Hard 1 & 2 work for us as a beginning.

Wine being brought through......my husband does give a good pour

Well, Mr Mac said at 7 this evening he had a taste to eat at BoJangles.
It’s a chain fast food place in the South near to our house.
Only 5 minute drive away from our house.

Let me tell you it’s the worse fast food place and completely forgot how bad the food was for me.
We ate there about 6 years ago and said I would never go there again.

Well, completely forgot I was not a fan for their menu.

Assume it’s popular with many as the place is always busy.

Shame, I hate getting a takeout or dinner anywhere and it`s not good, waste of a meal. One of the reasons we stick to our usual places normally unless somewhere comes highly recommended.

Hope you got something else to eat!!

Happy December 1st!!!

Glad to see the back of November. I was sad to hear the last aunt on my dad`s side passed away yesterday, she was well up in age and had been ill for some time, I hadn`t seen her for many years, but sad to hear all the same.

Today we woke to rain, but now it`s lovely and sunny and very mild for the time of year.

Headed out shopping this morning and my goodness it`s getting busier already, December seems to start folks shopping more than usual. Tim to stick to midweek or very early on a Friday. I did pick up some new Le Creuset pans, they don`t wear out I just fancied a change of colour, we`ve had those classic ones for over 20 years, so time for a change. Will pop the older ones into a charity store as they are in perfect condition.

For grocery stores we do like online shopping, not for any fresh produce at all, but handy for heavy/bulk stuff and cleaning stuff, saves wandering through the crowds!!

We have short ribs in the slow cooker for tonight, creamy mash and purple roasted carrots, will make some dumplings too, or doughballs as we Scots call them and plan to make an apple crumble for dessert with home made custard. The Grand Prix is on later so we may wait till it`s finished or put the tv on in the kitchen to watch it while we eat.

Christmas card writing today, always enjoy doing that, don`t enjoy paying the cost of stamps now, it`s around $1.75 for one stamp and I send a gazillion Christmas cards!!!

Almost lunchtime now, will get the kettle on for tea with lunch and mid afternoon pot of tea too with some fruit loaf I`m going to bake too, can`t beat tea really, but it`s got to be good quality and never a bag, then after dinner tea too of course, yes isn`t bragging about tea drinking the most boring thing on the planet!!!

Have a lovely Sunday 😊

Thank you Carole, daughter in law is just wanting to get it over and done now. The Doc told her it would be a number of months therapy after surgery.

I woke up with a barn burner of a headache this morning. Think it is a sinus infection. Have the meds to treat it so started those this morning.

Well, we received the white stuff yesterday late afternoon. It was funny in that it was snowing really hard at the store Which is about 3 miles from our house and then half mile from home there was nothing. Then the flurries reached us in a couple of hours. If the predicted weather stays on course it will melt off by Wednesday.

Did a little online shopping and picked up some electronic things from Target and Walmart yesterday.

Picked up the needed ingredients to make the cookies for the various office parties for family members.

Hubby wants a treadmill to help build his walking strength so we did a little investigating on the various options to choose from. We found the one we wanted online and I went to the sporting goods store and looked at it yesterday.

Hubby wants to look at it in person too. So will try and do that in next couple of days and arrange delivery and set up if he wants it.

I needed a new large roasting pan and found a nice one at TJ Maxx. One more thing off the needed list completed.

Going to take a little nap in awhile.

Have a wonderful Sunday everyone doing whatever makes you happy.

Take care all,

ruth

Happy December everyone.
No Black Friday shopping for me. Several years ago I started a new family Anti-Black Friday tradition. We find something to do as a family that does not involve shopping. This year B had to work, so dh and I went to a basketball game at our university. We actually went to 2, the men's game on Friday and women's on Saturday. Both teams won. At 5'2' I always feel a little bit short, but felt even shorter at the games. The men's team has a payer who is 7 feet tall and the women's team has a 6'6" member.

We also got all of our indoor Christmas decorations up. I have some outdoor decorations coming from Amazon this week.

Once my 4 sons grew up and on their own, we stopped the Christmas gifts and would send them cards with money.
B has only asked for gift cards this year. I kind of miss the days of toy buying, but gift cards are so much easier.

That kind of secret Santa I like. If it was just a matter of drawing a name and buying a gift I would be okay. The game we played involves taking gifts from others. It can get really cutthroat at times.
My favorite secret Santa gift came from when I worked for Home Depot years ago and I don't think any money was spent on it. I know that one of the ladies in my department was going through some difficult financial times. Thankfully we had a $10 limit on the gift. She drew my name. What I didn't know about her was that she could sew. She took some scrap material that she had on hand, some unbleached muslin, and made a cute rabbit out of it. She took some other material and made a dress for the rabbit. It was so cute. I still have it in storage somewhere.

It's great you were able to reconnect with some family members. I just wish it had been under better circumstances.

I'm still in shorts and flip flops but most of the rest around here are in full PSL, Uggs and puffer jacket mode
I just put away most of my summer clothes. I'm not quite ready for Uggs and puffer jackets just yet though.

Prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.

I am sorry to hear about your brother. Prayers for him as he is deciding on his course of care.

We did go out yesterday
You are braver than I.

At noon, my phone buzzed the outlets closest to us, the highway access to the road to it, was closed, as no parking was available, and not to park at the nearby Costco or Chick unless you going into those, and leave when done. Funny, as the last place we would think to go was to the outlets.
A few years ago I made the mistake of going to the outlet mall when we were in Williamsburg on Black Friday. I will not do that again.

Poor older one caught Covid from work. Came home early afternoon yesterday, not feeling well, and took test. I was not surprised it was positive.
Prayers for a quick recovery.

Let me tell you it’s the worse fast food place and completely forgot how bad the food was for me.
We ate there about 6 years ago and said I would never go there again.
I am sorry you had such a bad experience. The Bojangles near me is pretty decent. I occasionally go there for lunch since it is close to my office.

Glad to see the back of November. I was sad to hear the last aunt on my dad`s side passed away yesterday, she was well up in age and had been ill for some time, I hadn`t seen her for many years, but sad to hear all the same.
So sorry to hear of another death in your family.

Well, my 5 day weekend is coming to a close. I am not looking forward to returning to work tomorrow. It might be a slow day though since my boss is taking the day off.

Caspian says Merry Christmas.
