Someone tell me I did the right thing!

Those are some might fine pictures money well spent. One word for sports shots carbon fiber monopod :rolleyes1

Might I ask what your two lens purchases were? Were they part of the "kit"?

I'm a Canon guy, but mostly because our first dslr was the original Canon Rebel and we had some lenses, so I stayed with the "system."

However, I think that the Nikon lenses, even the kit ones, offer better pictures "out of the box" so to speak. The soccer pictures in the early morning light are just superb!

If I had it to do all over again, I'd go Nikon. My actual dream camera is the Nikon 300ds (the new one they just came out with the HD video).
The lenses were part of the "kit"
18-55 and 55-200
both with AF but I'm not familiar enough yet to know if they have more to it than that. I can tell you that the 55-200 came with or without the AF but I paid the extra $50 now rather than go get it later. With my shaky hands, I figured I'd need it!

Funny, as I was reading that post my wife was just telling the kids we should start thing about what we want to ask santa for! I now have my first request!

This can work to your advantage. Thanksgiving at the in-laws....:rolleyes1
The only downside is that I really love my inlaws........but I like the concept and may use this in the future!

Awesome pics, brought back memories too, that is where Joey played soccer at your sons' age. I really liked they way they ran it down there, so much more fun then Rid. United.

Kim

Isn't it great? The kids are so innocent and keep going in all different directions. And try to tell them to stop cause they're out of bounds? Yea, it ain't happening!

Just walked in the door with a Nikon D5000 and the 2 lenses. I can't believe I just spent that much to take pictures but I really want to get my foot in the door to the DSLR world. I've been reading about them and trying them out in stores for months I just can't believe it finally happened! I did the right thing right?

You did the right thing....

I don't know you....

So I don't know why I am going to be so mean to share this with you...... :lmao:

One of my "reasons" aka rationalizations,, when buying photo equipment over the last few years is to take photographs of my kids. The question I ask, "How much would it be worth if I missed a certain photo?" Would it be worth $X to buy Y lense or Z camera....

Oh, those are dangerous questions with even more dangerous answers. :scared1::laughing:

Your kids will only be this age once. Going to WDW is a special trip. If you can get a few great photos that you will treasure a few decades down the road, every cent you paid for the camera equipment is worth it.

The photos are priceless. The camera equipment costs how much?

Later,
Dan

Dan, one day my wife will ask that we drive to WDW just so we can swing by NC to "Thank" you. If I still have use of all my fingers I'll try to give you a heads up. :rotfl2:

Why? And why do you think that Nikon lenses offer better pictures "out of the box"?

Congratulations on your new purchase! And welcome to the DSLR world. Those are some great first photos. I found it was amazing what a better camera could do with out me totally knowing what I was doing when I got my DSLR a little over a month ago. I'm still learning too. Of course my kids are my most popular subject. Thank God for fast shutter speeds. I need it to catch mine before some one moves.

Tell me bout it! I think I might need some faster lenses eventually for nighttime pictures. Daytime, I love getting a clear picture at 1/2000 of a sec!

I have a 50 mm f/1.8 that has been great for the few night shots that I have been able to get. I can't wait to get some night shots when we go to WDW in Dec. Enjoy your new toy.

Thanks! I'm loving it so far! Post some pics with that 50mm. I'm going to want a faster lens before we go but I'm not sure what I want yet.

Here are 2 of 2 of my little guys that I love that I took with my 50mm. I just realized I have no night shots with it. I did some night shots earlier this month at our boardwalk and just realized I used my kit lens. What was I thinking? :confused3 Here are the ones with the 50mm.

This one was taken in doors with just the natural light coming in the window. No flash.

I'm going to try to get some night shots later this week. I'll post them if I get them.

They are too cute! Thanks for the post. I'd love to see some at night if you get them.

Which boardwalk?

So has that little voice in your head started yet.....external flash, tripod, remote shutter release, filters.................... :rotfl2:

I can make it stop whenever I want. I can. No really. Yes, I've spent probably 100 hrs this yr reading about photography, yes I watched several videos on youtube this morning looking at Lightroom and Elements, and yea, MAYBE I ordered a remote shutter yesterday but I don't have a problem!

Yea, I grumbled a little about not having a macro lens when trying to take close ups out back yesterday with only my kit lens. But I can make it stop whenever I want. I can I tell you!

By the way, I was thinking about getting a monopod soon. What makes one better than another other than size and weight? :rotfl2:

Which boardwalk?

We live right near the Point Pleasant, NJ boardwalk. Jenkinson's. Hopefully I can make it over there one night over the weekend by myself. The rest of the family gets really annoyed with me stopping to take pictures. They better learn to put up with it when we go to WDW in Dec. that's half the reason I got the DSLR!

I'm really looking forward to it! I've never been there and would love to see the pictures! Maybe I'll take the kids there one morning for something different.

Congrats on your new DSLR NateNLogansDad!

I have the Nikon 50mm for night shots, but I honestly prefer the 28mm. It's faster and sharper than the 50mm and I can even get handheld shots at night with it.

To help out a bit, if you want a lens that does double duty the 28mm gives you nice street shots and works as a step up from a wide angle, and the 50mm doubles as a good portrait lens.

Have fun shooting and shopping! :goodvibes
