Hey Sweetness here is my .02 worth. My mother is a 70 year old lady who has had so much chemo, medication etc., she can't remember anything. While on an outing with her recently she forgot her purse in a bathroom stall. I was busy helping my daughter who was not feeling well so did not realize my mom had left her purse. So the cash, medication, id and house keys in the purse would have been finders keepers if the nice, moral woman with a clue had not turned it in. Glad you weren't the one who found it although I guess my mother and I should just know better and learn our lesson.

yeah in some instances they call those people "looters " rather than "pickpockets" I believe...some here could have a real lucrative time after Francis if they play their cards right and don't get shot first

in defense of Sweetness she said that in an instance like that she WOULD return the items intact.
I think she means she wouldn't return items that couldn't possibly be returned to it's home like a camera or a bag of souviners or a hat or that sort of thing.
Not that that's okay, but it's a little better than what I originally assumed...
In a place like Disney though, I feel more obligated than EVER to attempt to return items no matter what.

Last summer my 9 yo DS lost his autograph book. We were to be in WDW 10 days and on our last day, he lost it. He took that book everwhere. He had just about ever page filled. His goal was to get a diferrent character on ever page. I tell you that's no small task either. We went to see the Beauty and the Beast show and when we left I notced his fanny pack was open and the book was not visable. We ran back to where we were sitting and it wasn't there. This was the last place he had it because he was showing it to his sister while waiting for the show to start. We couldn't have been more then 25 feet away when we notcied he didn' have it. But no it was gone. Went to lost and found but no luck. Was that you sweatness sitting next to us? I guess someone like you decided "finders keepers". At least I have the pictures that I took of him geeting the autographs. People with this "me..me..me" attitude discust me so. I'm sure they tell everyone how they collected all the autographs themselves too.

After reading all of the posts, let's all try to help out disneyjulie's DD. Disneyjulie, I have a few extra pins that I try to trade, but I would hate to see your DD's trip ruined because of some idiot. If you PM me, I could send a couple to you for your DD. I'd also like to ask all of us DISers to join in and help out this 10 yr old girl. After all, isn't that what Disney is all about?

I believe this covers that "found" items that are taken or appropriated that were not bought by you is stealing. Looting is considered stealing too--according to Webster.

Two years ago a man dropped a wallet out of his ECV in the wallet was 3 platnium credit cards and $3K in cash.MyWife found the wallet and reported in to a CM nearby Splash Mt. when the owner appeared in his ECV.The man was on oxygen and very upset.My wife handed over the wallet and he thanked her profusely.I guess under the proposed guideline by our DIS brethren we are entitled to the contents.

DHWhittles, in her first post Sweetness mentioned specifically that if you leave your "purse" behind. She did not in that post mention anything about returning it. I am hopeful that Sweetness would return it and yet that first post really leaves me to wonder. Yes, the moral of the story is to be careful, be alert and don't be forgetful. In a perfect world we would all do just that. But life gets complicated and people do forget. I agree with a previous poster that even just cash by itself should be turned in. Years ago my stepdad (married to forgetful, sick mom) found a wad of cash while mall walking. He turned it in and after 3 months the mall called him, said nobody had claimed it and it was his to come and get. Maybe his good deed, which in the end only benefitted him, came back to him years later when that lady turned in my mom's purse. The cash she had was minimal but her medication she had with her is expensive. One of those drugs alone is over $8 a pill and she had 3 on her. I think we have all beat this topic to death and the general consensus seems to be: Finder's NOT keepers. Do the right thing and you'll be suprised how good you feel.

I don't think that is how her original post was worded, and even in it's current version, I still don't agree with it.

If someone loses a camera or a bag of souvenirs or anything else, it should be turned in. That person should have the opportunity to find it through lost and found. I guess that I'll never know if those two digital cameras made it back to the right hands, but at least I know that I'm not the one keeping them from their rightful owners.

Sweetness--If I accidentally left my camera behind, and there was a name/address on it, would you consider it yours or try to get it back to me? Do you just not trust Lost/Found or do you really think you are entitled to anything that you find?

Basically, if you can get away with it, you will- if the person catches you redhanded with the item, then you PRETEND that you were planning on giving it back the whole time? That is a sad way to go through life.

OK, OK, and now this horse is dead, too. A quick recap:

1. Stealing is wrong .

2. Turning things into lost and found is good .

3. You can't argue someone into behaving decently (that old phrase 'me thinkest thou protesteth too much' comes to mind - I'm thinking there are those on this board who HAVE to justify keeping 'found' objects, otherwise they couldn't sleep at night !)

Jeez, Sweet! What if it was a kid from Make a Wish or Give the Kids the World that left something behind? Or someone that saved up for a once in a lifetime trip and can't afford much in toys for their kids?

Everyone forgets something at some point. And anyway, keeping a lost item is against the law. It varies from state to state, but you usually have to wait a few months to see if someone claims an item before it's legally yours. And you have to place adds in the newspaper, too, so the person has a chance to figure out their lost item was found. So not only is keeping something not the right thing to do, but it's also illeagal (although I doubt anyone would get caught or even prosecuted if they were!).

Edited to add: Regarding the OP, I hope who ever stole the pins gets careless and sits on them. All of them. At once. With the pointy ends UP!

I'd pay money to see that!

This is a bit off topic, but how do people carry around that much cash in a crowded place like WDW? I would be a nervous wreck! I'd rather pay a buck or two for an ATM fee, use travelers checks or use a debit or credit card than take the risk of losing hundreds of dollars.

That said, I was once the recipient of a kindness by some unknown person who turned in a bag of souvenirs we left after a late evening snack at Beaches & Cream. I agree with the majority here that anything found should be turned in to Lost & Found.

How do you figure these items "couldn't possibly be returned to it's home"? If you give the found items to Lost and Found, they have <i>every</i> possibility of being returned to the rightful owner. Even something as simple as a hat. We lost my DD's hat and my DS's hat....pretty non-descript Disney-themed baseball hats. Probably purchased by lots of people. We took a chance at Lost and Found, and because we had an idea of the day we lost them, they were able to pull the correct storage box and find the hats! My kids were so thrilled! Thank you to whomever turned those hats in.

My DH dropped DS's hat accidentally at Hershey Park. We looked high and low for it. A very nice lady told us that someone found it and turned it into a ride operator nearby. What a nice person to do that so we could find it. Again at Hershey Park my kids found $40 on the ground which we took to lost and found. We thought maybe a young kid lost their spending money. It is easier and nicer for all if you just turn in things that you find. They are not yours. At least that is what we are trying to teach our kids. To OP, I am sorry someone took your DD's pins. That is just mean.

What I want to know....was Sweetness at a water park in New England last week??? A favorite Disney towel of my friends was taken and never returned. I assumed that it was taken by mistake and the mistake was not discovered until that family returned home but now i'm not too sure if it was indeed a mistake!

I don't know about any of you guys, but i'm glad to see by Sweetness's countdown, I will not be at WDW when Sweetness is!

MWe went to Typhoon Lagoon last week and left our things on a chair...just 2 towels and my daughters new Blue Cinderella Pool cover up...wshe loved it so much in the store we bought a bigger size so she would have it for 2-3 years....well we got back to our chair and some dirt bag had stolen it!! I stopped at lost and found and even called there the next 2 days but it wasn't turned in....I searched ebay through 3000+ Cinderella items and there is not one Cinderella cover up on there!! I found Aeriel but she had the Cinderella hat that matched the coved up and wants her cover up back....some people are such jerks!!

At least I know from experience that there still are good, moral people in the world. I also believe what goes around, comes around; you do good deeds, good deeds are done to you in return; you do wrong, wrong will befall you.

On our first Disney trip, we left our camcorder in Toontown. Didn't realize it till we were walking back to the Contemporary. DH RAN back to Toontown, it was gone. Asked CMs around and they said go to Lost and Found. There it was!!

Last year at WDW, I was waiting outside the Speedway ride by Tomorroland. Someone left their backpack right next to me. I waited a long time to see if the person came back and they never did. I finally grabbed the backpack (without even looking in it) and gave it to the CM at the Speedway ride.

About a month after I found that backpack, I left my purse in my shopping cart at BJs store. I realized it about 5 minutes away at another store. I drove back as fast as I could, heartbroken and worried the wrong person would find my purse. I thought the whole way back about how I'll have to cancel the CC, how much cash was in there, how many personal things were in there, and I prayed that a kind person found it.

When I got there I ran to Customer Service. I explained what happened, holding back the tears. She said that they tried to contact me with my BJs membership card but the number had changed (I changed my number a few months earlier) and I was SO relieved to hear that. That means they had my purse!!! She said I was so lucky that a kind man found it and turned it in and I agreed!!!! I was truly so very lucky!

I feel that because I'm a person that returns things without debating whether I should or not (on whether it has their name and address on it), I got payback by getting my purse back. What goes around comes around.
