Someone poisoned my kitty!

If this has not already been covered, please make sure ALL your local media knows about this happening. The sicko may just move to another neighborhood, so your entire area needs to know about it.

You know, as I sit here reading these responses, I get a little sad. There are areas in this country that it is illegal to have your pets run free. But, there are also places where it is not!!! While I was growing up, we always allowed our cats to go outside. Some even let their dogs run free. Now, my 3 cats are indoor cats. That is my choice. How do any of you know where Heidi lives? In what kind of an area. She may live in an area that would seem to be safe for cats. Yes, cats do get into other people's yards. Mine did and a neighbor complained and I kept the cat indoors from then on. But for us to make judgements on why she would let her cat out, when legally she could, is just wrong. It seems that she feels she made a mistake in doing this. Obviously she feels horrible about it and would keep the cat inside now if she could. Do I think that family pets should be inside instead of running free? Yep, sure do. But placing partial blame on someone in this situation is just wrong. As we hear more and more of these horror stories, more and more of us will keep our pets inside, away from those sick people out there. Again Heidi, I'm so sorry this had to happen to your cat and your neighbors animals. Hoping they catch the 'person' who did it soon!!!

I agree. We have 1 indoor cat and 1 outdoor. If I had my choice I woudl keep my outdoor cat inside. But he wakes us up at 3 in the morning and hollars (not cries) but HOLLARS for us to let him out. For everyones sanity I let him go out. He has been an outdoor cat since he we moved to our neighborhood years ago. In our neighborhood it is acceptable. He is a black cat so near Halloween we keep him in as much as possible. I am truly sorry for your loss. :(

It's not illegal to let your cats roam in our county. Actually everyone on our street (not too many, live in a rual area) lets their dogs and cats roam. There are a lot of barns in our area and nearly everyone has 'barn cats' to keep the mice out. Some farmers don't do anything with/for the cats in their barns (which usually just show up one day) and some of them feed them every day. Others vacinate them and generally look after their health. This is so common in rual America and there are awful lot of folks that see nothing wrong with letting your cats live outside. I guess I can see how they would be bothersome in more urban settings but honestly, there is probably no less than 30 cats living within a mile radius of my house and not one has ever bothered me. I'm thankful when I see an old Tom streak through the fields behind the house hunting a mouse. I know that will be one less mouse that'll be tempted to try to come visit me next winter, lol.

I don't agree with goin2disneyagain. Animals shouldn't be running lose. A person with "freedom" knows not to trespass and animal doesn't.

Please don't misquote me. It's fine to disagree with me but don't misquote me. I never said animals should be "running loose." I said they should be able to walk outside without being harmed. I never saw where the OP said her kitty was trespassing or running loose. How do we know that the kitty never left its own yard?? After all the kitty was found on her doorstep. Cats are not known to cause trouble in their neighbors yards. By the way, there is a leash law in my area for DOGS but not for CATS. My next door neighbors cat comes into my driveway and climbs on top of my car and lays down all the time. I have never once gotten upset about this and even if I had I would never even consider harming the cat. If it becomes a problem then you should talk to the owner not kill their pet. That doesn't give someone the right to kill an animal. I can't believe people are blaming the owner for this!!! How ridiculous!!! I guess that means that a serial killer has the right to kill someone because they walked outside of their house!!!

This is Laurie's youngest and I think that is sick and wrong.

If they catch that creep or creeps!!! They should poison and/or mutilate them. Let's see how they like.

I just hope it doesn't happen again. I'm sending licks on the face from our new puppies.

I am outraged that you would even suggest that it is the owners fault that their pet was killed because they allowed them outside. Here in the U.S. we like our freedom and so do our pets. They should be able to go outside without their owners worrying about what will happen to them. Only a sick person would harm an animal.

edited to add: Since I am misquoted later in this thread, let me clarify that I think pets should be able to walk outside their own homes but I did not say it was OK to "roam" and cause trouble for their neighbors.

Sorry I misinterpreted the intention of your post. In an urban or suburban setting giving a pet their freedom exposes them to the risk of being run over by a car. Allowing the pet outside in that environment makes it likely the pet is bothering a neighbor. A neighbor with a bird feeder certainly doesn't want a cat stalking the birds.

I object to the first half of your sentence. I don't think (in that environment) they should be allowed their freedom to be outside PERIOD. I agree the cat shouldn't be poisoned but the owner SHOULD be worried about what would happen to them; attacked by another animal (or attacking another animal) run over by a car or even getting sick by eating something they shouldn't be (lawn chemicals, garbage...)
