Someone poisoned my kitty!

I'm so sorry that your this happened to your kitty. And the fact that the cat was outside in NO way excuses this act whatever a person's belief system may be.

That is terrible! I can't believe someone could be so mean. Such sad news for a family.:(

I'm so sorry about your cat and all the other pets in the neighborhood. I hope they catch this person soon. I would have people with pets put video cameras in their windows to see if they can "see" anything.

This story makes me ill. I'm so sorry.

(I won't go into the whole "cats should be indoors" spiel because I've skimmed this thread and the point has been well made.) :(

What I'm wondering is, how did this sicko know it was your cat? Did your cat only hang around your yard, or was she wearing a collar with your address on it as a form of ID?

Just wondering. Again, so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry about your kitty. A few years ago our kitty was poisoned. My daugher found her outside under her swingset convulsing. My daughter was so upset, she was crying and saying that she had had her kitty longer than her little brother. (My daughter had gotten her when she was 18 months old and loved her to pieces.) I would make sure that everyone in your neighborhood knows to keep all of their pets inside until this rotten person is found. Maybe a few people could quietly stage a steakout and see if they can catch the jerk in the act.

I am so sorry for the loss of your kitty. Sounds like there is some psycho out there.

We lost two cats in one year when I was in high school. One was probably poisoned, the other was hund by a rope from a tree while a fire burned her from the bottom up. We were never able to prove who killed our cats, but I was pretty sure it was some neighborhood boys. I know that they have both since been in jail.

Now all my cats are inside kitties.

How awful. That makes me want to cry. :( That's exactly why my kitties are strictly indoors.

I had several cats killed by dogs and cars when I was a child and I would never have an outdoor cat again....

OMG Denae! That is awful! :(

First off I am so sorry! I hope this sicko is found & I hope all other neighbors with pets keep a VERY watchful eye on them!

I have cats, yes both are & always have been indoors cats. But my dad had a cat, although he kept it indoors he (the cat) would always try to run outside. It was awful when opening the front door, he would be right there waiting to make a run for it.
He did escape 2x & thankfully both times he came back.
My dad ended up building a special kennel for him. It looked like a dog kennel but was fenced on the top also. His cat LOVED being outside & my dad knew he would not wander off. My dad had it on the grass so his cat could lay out in the shade on the grass.
He never escaped the kennel either & he never tried to run away again.

Anyway, my thoughts are with you & your neighbors

My "baby" was found dead on our doorstep this morning with her head in a box of rat poison. We rescued this cat from the Animal Shelter literally minutes away from being put down. She was a great cat! I can't believe some sicko poisoned my cat! We called the police and they came along with Animal Control and took my kitty as evidence so we can't even have a proper "service" for her. There have been 9 cats killed in the last 5 days or so in my subdivision. 4 poisoned and 5 were mutilated by a serrated knife. I hope they find out who is doing this! It's sick and wrong!!

I waited to tell my kids until after school today and they are taking it hard but a lot better than I did.

Why would someone poison or mutilate an innocent cat?

I'm just so sad.

Did you know about the other cats that were being killed before you let your cat out again? I keep my cat indoors so as not to bother other people but if I had an outdoor cat I certainly would have kept it in no matter what if I knew other cats were being killed. Poor cat! I believe it is the owners responsibilty to watch their animals. Yes, the creeps that did this should rot in jail but you have a responsibilty to protect your pets. Also wanted to add that in our area it is illegal for cats to run free. I love cats and would never harm them but I will alert the owner of a problem cat. I had to do this last year. This cat kept coming to our back door and trying to fight with my indoor cat through the screen or glass. It was terrible. Not only that but this cat started marking everything and pooping in my vegetable garden. I caught him in the act three times. He also stalked and killed many a birds at my feeders. I knew whose cat it was and talked to her a number of times abouth the problem. Nothing was done. The last time I told her if I caught him in my yard again I would call animal control and that is exactly what I did. They caught the cat and notified the owner. She now keeps him indoors where ALL cats belong if they cannot stay in their own yard.

OMG! I hope they catch who is doing that. That is just plain SICK!
And somebody has a serious problem that they need to get help for. I watch enough of the shows on A & E to know that is how alot of these serial killers get started.

Keep us posted if they find out who is doing this.

I am sooooo sorry to hear about your kitty.

I am so sorry :( Reading things like this absolutely breaks my heart. If it's any consolation, I'm sure your kitty knew it was loved and cherished and is over the rainbow bridge.

There's hopefully a special place in hell for people who hurt animals and children

I am always afraid to have my dogs out of my sight when they are outside in our fenced in yard. The little one is an escape artist and also we have questionable neighbors in the "slums" behind my house. The kids have thrown things in my yard, tried to hit my dogs with a board with a nail on it, and they routinely jump/bend my fence. We're in the process of levelling the yard so we can put a privacy fence up but in the meatime I am always nervous they will try to poison my dogs. One time the little one escaped (with his collar on with our info) to visit the kids in the playground. He's very friendly. Someone grabbed him and locked him in a station wagon with the windows up in the sun and left. I had to get the police to open the car to let him out. this was less than 10min after he got out of my yard.

It never would have happened if the cat had been kept indoors. No -- not illegal to allow the cat to roam free; but it certainly isn't in the best interest of any pet's health to allow it to roam free.

I am outraged that you would even suggest that it is the owners fault that their pet was killed because they allowed them outside. Here in the U.S. we like our freedom and so do our pets. They should be able to go outside without their owners worrying about what will happen to them. Only a sick person would harm an animal.

edited to add: Since I am misquoted later in this thread, let me clarify that I think pets should be able to walk outside their own homes but I did not say it was OK to "roam" and cause trouble for their neighbors.

In some parts of the US it is illegal to let your pets roam free whether you like it or not. Cats are to be on a leash if they want to go outside here. And yes I think the owner shares in this. I get tired of no one wanting to take responsibility for their actions or inactions. While I don't think the owner should get any punishment, as losing a loved pet is bad enough, I do believe owners are the ultimate in protecting their pets.

It doesn't sound like the cat was poisoned while in your house or even when it was on your property.

Yes, what that person did to the cat was wrong.

I don't agree with goin2disneyagain. Animals shouldn't be running lose. A person with "freedom" knows not to trespass and animal doesn't.

Many people really don't want someone else's animals running through their property, going through their garbage or using their property as a bathroom.

It is rude (and some areas illegal) to turn your animals lose. Many of your neighbors don't want your pets on their property.

Again what was done was wrong but you really have to share some of the blame. Suppose the cat was hit by a car?

WOW I had no idea the kind of responses this would get. I'm shocked actually that so many people even wrote in...thank you for doing so.

I realize I should never have let her out but I did! I'm dealing with that now and it stinks! It's always easier to look back and wish you hadn't done something. The fact remains that it is NOT against the law in MY county where I live therefore I broke no law except maybe a "moral" law that never occured to me would happen. Call me stupid, naive whatever you want but I had no reason to believe that this would happen to me or my kitty. I've gone over the what if's so many times and I'm angry at myself for not forseeing this and angry at whoever did this. I fear they will never find who did this as rat poison is not illegal to own or use. Intentionally killing an animal is against the law but proving it I have been told will be hard.

I appreciate all the responses and realize that people have their own opinions which I appreciate. I understand that I should have kept her in but it's too late for that now!

If I have any other updates to add I will otherwise this will be the last post from me as there is nothing I can add. I don't know anything else and have no idea of the details of any of the cats, how they were found, with what in their systems.

Thank you all again!
Heidi

You know, as I sit here reading these responses, I get a little sad. There are areas in this country that it is illegal to have your pets run free. But, there are also places where it is not!!! While I was growing up, we always allowed our cats to go outside. Some even let their dogs run free. Now, my 3 cats are indoor cats. That is my choice. How do any of you know where Heidi lives? In what kind of an area. She may live in an area that would seem to be safe for cats. Yes, cats do get into other people's yards. Mine did and a neighbor complained and I kept the cat indoors from then on. But for us to make judgements on why she would let her cat out, when legally she could, is just wrong. It seems that she feels she made a mistake in doing this. Obviously she feels horrible about it and would keep the cat inside now if she could. Do I think that family pets should be inside instead of running free? Yep, sure do. But placing partial blame on someone in this situation is just wrong. As we hear more and more of these horror stories, more and more of us will keep our pets inside, away from those sick people out there. Again Heidi, I'm so sorry this had to happen to your cat and your neighbors animals. Hoping they catch the 'person' who did it soon!!!
