Someone poisoned my kitty!

Oh, Heidi, this is just so awful. :( I'm so sorry for you and the kids.

When I lived in Virginia, there was a cult that would steal black cats for Satanic rituals. I told Wedge to avoid the windows, I was that scraed for him! I don't understand how people can do things to defenseless little animals.

I am in NO WAY blaming the cat owner, I feel for her. I'd go ballistic if someone harmed my cats.

I just want to stress that:

An indoor cat is a SAFE cat! Its a nasty world outside: disease, other animals, cars, evil people, etc. PLEASE, KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS!!

I agree!! We had an old neighbor whos cat was always in our bushes right outside our front door using them as a toilet...it STUNK so bad.. drove me nuts....I would turn the hose on it when I would catch it there but I would never kill the thing as much as I hated it....I simply don't understand why some people let their cats go outdoors....thankfully that nighbor moved and all others keep their cats indoors....

Sorry about your cat being poisoned..that was a sick sick thing to do!

What a terrible thing to have happen. I'm very sorry. :(

Ugh, what twisted minds do people have to have to do this sort of thing? And once they get away with torturing animals, people like that do move on to small children who also can't speak up for themselves.

But yes, a story like this is one of the many reasons why my kitty stays inside. If a cat wants to go out you can take it for a walk like a dog, on a leash. But sometimes they sneak out or get let out by a visitor. It doesn't mean that the owner's asking for the cat to be poisoned or mutilated!

Besides, lots of people keep dogs in their backyards--it's usually fine when sickos don't poison them like they did the Labrador!

I realize that it was irresponsible to let her out BUT she was accustomed to being outside and would "cry" horribly to go out. If someone opened the door she would bolt but she always came back within an hour or two. Our county has no ordinance about cats being on a leash or kept locked up and we primarily got her to be a mouser since we have a canal a couple of blocks behind our house and rats and mice always going through our yard. We got her primarily for that but we also fell in love with her which makes this even harder. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I really wish I hadn't let her out but I did! I'm sad and distraught that someone did this to an innocent cat.

I figured I'd get told the importance of keeping my cat inside and that is fine...I seriously wish I had now but it still doesn't diminish how wrong it is no matter what.

Heidi
Heidi,
In no way was I meaning that you were irresponsible for allowing your cat to be outdoors...we NEVER had an indoor cat while I was growing up at all. I was only talking about how stunned I was that this is even a consideration, that this sort of thing ever happens at all. I guess I was just shocked that people would even think of doing something so horrendous to any animal.

I sincerely apologize if my post came off like I was suggesting that you did ANYTHING wrong at all. Or even that you or anyone else should not allow your cats outside. That was totally not my intent. I hope they find the sick CRIMINAL who did this to your cat and to your family...and all of the other people in your neighborhood. Sounds like you have an unstable freak getting his/her sick jollies...that is truly scary. I really hope they find him soon.

A man in our area was just sentenced to 4 months in jail for soaking a kitten in lighter fluid, setting it on fire, and dropping it out of the door. A neighbor heard the poor thing screaming, got it, put the fire out and took it to the vet, who had to put it down.

He was sentenced to 4 months and is bemoaning it, talking about what a great guy he really is and this isn't like him.

It's been on the front page quite often.

It's sick and I feel bad for you and your kids and that poor kitty. I hope they catch the sick person/people who are doing this.

I am so sorry about your kitty. :( Some people are just SICK! I know it must be scary knowing someone in the neighborhood is capable of doing something like this. Please be careful! I hope they catch this vicious criminal.

You know, rat poison takes a LONG time to work. It basically keeps the blood from clotting so an animal (or person) dies from internal bleeding. It might take a few hours for cats, but a dog, especially a big dog like a lab, would be at least a day or two. And if it is caught in time there is an antidote to the poison.

I have a feeling that these animals are being killed some other way and then just made to look like they were killed with rat poison. I hope Animal Control is doing thorough necropsies on the animals that are found. And that the sick so-and-so is found soon!

I'm am so sorry for your loss and the awful circumstances. :grouphug:

A memorial might help a little, with any pictures you have of her.

That's too bad about your pet. I hope someone is making sure this is publicized enough in the news/tv/print to let people know that they MUST keep their pets in the house for their own safety.

I am so sorry for you and your precious kitty. You should not have to keep your kitty locked up inside the house for fear that something bad would happen to her. There are lots of sick people in this world and this just proves it.

i am horrified by this story and can't imagine the pain you feel. I will never understand how some people can live in this world with such hatred for everything.

My thoughts are with you and hopes that this monster is caught soon.

Your poor kitty cat.....when they catch the sicko, they should give him/her/them some of the rat poison and see how they like it!!!!

Rat poison is prescribed by doctors for human beings on a regular basis. It's a blood thinner.

I know I'll probably be flamed for this -- but just as much responsibility rests with the owner for allowing the cat to go outside. I would get in serious trouble if I were to allow my dog to wander at her will at all hours of the night -- why is it consider OK for cats? I also say this as one who grew up with cats all my life -- and one who as an 8-year old buried his favourite cat after she was hit on the highway. Cats belong inside -- no matter how much they cry.

:( That is so sad. I know that sounds maybe too simple of a statement, but I just felt such sadness when I saw this. No animal deserves this. Hugs to you and your family.

Whoever did that is just sick.

Yes, the cat should have been indoors but do you truly believe that JUST AS MUCH responsibility is on the owner? Someone poisoned her animal and she takes equal responsibility for that? If it is legal in her county and she believes in letting the cat out (after all...you can't fence a cat in like a dog) she was well within her rights to do that.

I think saying she has just as much responsibility as an animal mutilator is over the top.

It doesn't even matter if it is illegal in her area, killing someone's pet is horrific. The blame of that deed falls squarely on the shoulders of the sadist that would do such an evil thing....JMHO

Oh I agree but I'm just trying to say she was well within her rights to have the cat out....therefore she did nothing wrong.
