Someone Please Stop the Mango, Garlic and DxDP!!!

Hello fellow DIS'ers! Well, like my daughter (Frzndaqiri) I am attempting my first TR along side of hers. You should easily be able to follow our same trip together from two different perspectives since we weren't always together.

Introductions first:
Me (Lisa) - A WDWaholic since I first went back in 1973 (even if it was only for about 1/2 a day and my Birthday. It was over 100 degrees with 100% humidity and E-tickets which were very confusing to me at 16! (I'll save you the math, I'm 53) So my parents and I decided to leave early. I should also mention it was July 3rd - so the Magic Kingdom was packed to the hilt!!!)

This is us at the airport after a long -unrestful night!

My DH (Grumpy) - also a WDW addict since I took him on a spur of the moment trip after dating for a couple of months. (yep - 2 hours notice went like this: You want to go to Disney? Are you kidding? Nope. Yep! Let's go and we drove off at 7 pm at night in the car, and through the huge 1993 ice storm that hit Ohio, KY and Tenn. They were closing down I-75 as we were traveling down, and we were all alone on the highway. We felt like we were in the Twilight zone!)

My DD (Melanie) - celebrated her B'day on the 18th while in Disney. She's also a Disney addict and had been twice previous to this trip, once as a child and once as a young adult.

My DSIL (Chris) - had been to Disney one time before this during our family trip in 1999. A new addict had arisen!!!

This trip wasn't just for Melanie's birthday, but also for both of our Anniversary's. (19 years for us and 1 year for them.)

The majority of the pictures were taken by Melanie and her awesome camera (you'll see the disjointed images logo). THANK YOU, MEL! A few of ours might be added in along with eventually some of our Photo-pass pics.

We spent our first night near the airport with a special deal of Stay/Park/Fly. For $111.00 the four of us shared a double room that included TWO WEEKS to park our car at the Airlines Parking/Shuttle. Wow - even with a AAA rate of 10 per day it would have cost us $140. Although we'll pick a different hotel next time - I'd definitely do this again!

My next post to follow shortly will be our planning phase of what parks and what restaurants.

And what's up with the title re: mango, garlic and DxDP? It will all come to light as the report goes on.

Well, I promised I'd post our calendar of plans during our 2 weeks at WDW. We were staying at the Coronado the first week, and at the Best Western Lake Buena Vista in DTD week 2. David and I have stayed at this high rise before and absolutely love it and will stay here many more times to come. Reasons why later.

As mentioned earlier, I had found a great package deal for Stay/Park/and FLY. We picked the Clarion since it had good reviews from previous guests. We figured as long as it was clean and close to Airlines Parking, it would free us from worrying about travel weather for Mel and Chris who are just over an hour away from the airport.

Our DS had asked David to make some Stuffed Cabbage on Saturday, and so he did. Sunday was had bowling at 5:30 pm until 8:30. We left and picked up Mel and Chris at his relative's house where they were leaving their car. They insisted on returning to our home to eat David's stuffed cabbage. (It is some of the best around - trust me!) Afterward, we add our baggage into the car and head for the Clarion. We had an easy check-in and a first floor inside room. The room looked nice and was very clean. No bed-bugs. It was after 10 pm...probably more like 11. So, you'd think we'd hit the hay knowing we had to get up at 4? Heck no! We were all too excited. Melanie and I each hit our beds while the men walked to the store to get Mt. Dew's and munchies. I should restate part of this comment: hit the concrete! Wow - these beds were hard, hard, hard. David quickly chose the chair and slept upright all night (brat) while I had my bed to myself (didn't help) and Chris and Mel shared theirs. Melanie and I had our dose of laughing fits and we probably fell asleep close to 1 or so in the morning.

We were all up and ready to go on time, and out the door by 4:30. We parked the car at the Airlines Parking lot, and shuttled over to the airport. I had prepaid for our stowed luggage, and dropped it off at Delta's check-in. Our boarding passes had already been printed off at home, and therefore we were pre-checked in. Next was the TSA ... hmmm. David is full of metal so he figured he'd be picked on. (yep - he was but quick and over with)

So, I had pulled my laptop out of the carry-on and placed it in it's own bin, my purse, all my insulin and supplies, my coat, my shoes. Good job - just as I planned. HA! I'm standing there at the end waiting for my things to come through, and I see the technician's staring at their screen and calling for the men to come look. Now I'm wondering what I did wrong. My carry-on slowly comes out and stops, he gently unzips the outer pocket and pulls out a quart sized baggie. (oops..that's right-I put that there so I could pull it out and bin it!) A quart sized baggie filled with about 60 Disney pins to trade in the parks. I profusely began apologizing telling them I placed it in an outer pocket so I'd remember to remove it. The two men were laughing away and started discussing the pins and asked me a couple of questions as to which character some of them were. It obviously made their morning! A+ to TSA at DTW on the 10th of January! (Oh, I forgot to mention you're motioned to come forward through a usual walk-thru type thing with arms above your head. They had me in a back scatter without me even realizing it. Oh well. Their breakfast not mine!

You cannot get into Detroit Metro McNamara without a boarding pass, so this was our first time ever seeing it. It is quite pretty for an airport, fresh and clean. Melanie already told you of our breakfast choosing, so I won't reiterate that portion. By 6 a.m. w were sitting in the waiting area of our boarding gate. Our plane (no pictures-was facing the wrong way for any good pictures - it was a 757-300. Much longer version than the 200. Our seats were the row across 19 - both sides. Below are a few pics of the airport and of the flight.

Can you tell it's early? About 6:30 am now.

That's it for our travel. It was Mel and Chris's first time on a plane. The only views we had were clouds, clouds and more clouds. It was when even Atlanta was going to be slammed with snow. Mel had fallen asleep when we were over the huge mountainous peaks so there aren't any pictures. They were jagged and oh so tall. I've never seen anything like them before.

Our flight was supposed to be 2 hours and 20 minutes. I hear they always say longer than actually anticipated to give the airlines leeway and make customers believe they're ahead of the game. Works for me either way. We landed and were searching for the fake monorail by 10:30 a.m. After 2 days of travel on foot (can feel that way) we found the luggage carousel, then to the other end for Dollar rent-a-car, and back to the middle and out the door to search for our car.

I played with this for over 2 months, always bettering my last deal. I found a "deal of the day" option with Dollar for a Full Size car at a complete rate of $288. for the 2 week stay. We originally wanted the Ford Taurus, but it didn't work out for comfort to all 4 people, so we finally ended up picking the Dodge Charger - both for acceptability and irritability. No one wanted to look at another car. Hunger, sleep depravity and airport-itis were kicking in.

After a short drive in wonderful warm weather - we found our destination.

I love all the characters hanging out of the van. Reminds me our family van trip back in 1999.

Then there it was - Coronado Springs Resort. Oh the anticipation of this WDW hotel. We had reviewed over and over all the opinions from people and decided it was the place for us. (The unofficial site is dead on with it's reviews. Thank you SO much!)

I must stop here to tell you to make sure you look at Melanie's TR (frzndaqiri). She found a special hidden Mickey many may have never noticed before.

So, the men sat down in the cushy chair of the waiting section, and Melanie and I went to see if our requests had any luck. We had asked for Casita's 4, king beds (pd for) and top floor. Possible connecting?

Great news - Casita's 4 top floor for me - somewhere way different for Melanie. Our CM was so nice! Beyond nice from the get-go. So, I explained that it was a special vacation for us that we had secured 6 months prior, and although they didn't need connecting rooms, we did want our King beds that we paid for, an upper floor if possible in the same Casita's 4.

After doing some work in the central computer, she came back happy as a lark. Great news - we have you both in the same building on the top floor of the Ranchos. Oh nooooooooo... don't cry, don't cry.

I explained we really wanted to remain in the Casita's. Just give me my original room, and see what can be done for Melanie's. Ooops.. my room is gone now - in the dust.

I'll shorten this to explain that the manager and our CM worked hard to find something for our special trip. I had explained I am disabled and prefer to have her at least in the same building and no first floors. Other than that - no preferences.

Voila! We are in Casita's 5 (even better) with me on the 4th floor:

PIXIE DUST!!!

I had additional dust - they had given me a Disabled room which not only gave me plenty of room for my scooter, but a HUGE bathroom to move around in with a shower arm. It doesn't have the double doors to close off the sink area though. With just the two of us, this wasn't an issue. Especially in comparison to the size of the bathroom!

This was going to be nice. Or was it?

My insulin safely put into the well working refrigerator, I layed across the bed-bug free mattress. Huh?? Where's the heavenly beds everyone was bragging about? I didn't figure it out until near the end of week 2. It was the newly placed Queen beds that people were in love with. Oh well - it's a beautiful resort, and next time I'd pick a queen room. IF you're wondering which resort to pick and want a mid price - go for the Coronado.

My room actually wasn't ready until about 30 minutes later while we were at lunch (no biggie - in fact I'd have waited 3 hours for what they did for us. FYI: we were NEVER demanding, insistent, nor anything in poor taste. We were only hopeful. I cannot stress how they were the ones that wanted to try for us. I could fly there just to hug them again!

So, we hadn't eaten since breakfast. Remember? We were all ready to explode at the car rental, dealt with 45 minutes at check-in, and needed to eat. DxDP here we come! YAY (dumb newbies lol)

A quick drive over to DTD and check in 2 hours late for our ressies to Puck's Cafe'. (Melanie has additional pics. I'll show the food David and I had eaten.)
First up - cokes for 3 and unsweeted iced tea for me.
Wait - what is this taste? Excuse me, is this flavored? Why, yes it is. That's Mango. (Ugh... my first of many experiences in different ways with Disney Mango.) Quick and easy switch to Coca-Cola and we're off to order our appetizer's.

I ordered the Scallops: Sauteed Maryland Style crab cake with marinated tomato basil aioli, garnished with micro greens. $15.95

They were so GOOD! I loved the addition of the tomatoes and herbs on top, and the sauce was different but yummy. (And no mango to be seen!)

David chose the Fried Calamari: Montery Bay calamari, marinated English cucumber with sweet curry aioli $12.95

David - being the "little guy" of our group always shares his food. And it was easy for the rest of us to dig into these bits of delight. So tender and lightly crispy.

For our entree's I chose the Macadamia Nut Crusted Breast of Chicken: Panko and macadamia nut crusted boneless breast of chicken, sho-yo cream, spice and garlic mashed potatoes $18.95

The first taste and I was sold. So tender and the macademia nut crust was perfect. Second taste was just as good. Third - oh oh, what's that taste? <sound of the knife in Halloween 1> m a n g o! noooooooooo! Luckily, I was able to move most of it aside and enjoyed every morsel left otherwise. I highly suggest it - I'll just say no mango next time.

David chose the Chilean Salmon: Saffron whipped potatoes, asparagus and basil buter sauce $18.95

He said this was some of the best salmon he had in a long time. He's very timid about ordering salmon at restaurants because you never know the quality of the fish nor the chef. Everyone tried a bite of this also, except me - I unfortunately do not like salmon.

We dutifully tried to stuff the rest of our meals down the gullet only to hear our server ask for our dessert orders. More food? OK, we can at least try a bite.

I chose the Chocolate Lava Cake: Warm soft centered cake with vanilla ice cream $7.95

This was warm, soft and ooey gooey. I definitely didn't finish it.

David chose the Classic Carrot Cake: Homemade cream cheese icing with candied pecans $7.95

David said this was moist and a very good rendition of carrot cake.

This lunch totals up to $82.70 before drinks and tip. I don't know about you, but we would never have put this kind of money out to lunch! Just seems insane - but it was definitely good!

Was our room ready? Would we get rest before our next dining ressie at the steakhouse? Would pixie dust continue to rain upon us?

We had thought about doing one together, but decided 2 different perspectives trying to keep in time with one another would be interesting not only to others, but to us.

We truly enjoyed CSR. I highly recommend the queen beds though from other people's reports. We will definitely try them next time. The views though are spectacular, we enjoyed the market restaurant - very good omelet at a great price, and the CM's were always ready with a warm greeting and a helping hand.

Yikes! I'm with you - I'd live there in a minute if I had good job or a free home!

My first time there when I was 16, I took the Haunted Mansion seriously and wanted to sign up to be a ghost there one day!

The last I had left you, we were stuffed to the gills at Wolgang Puck's Cafe'. All in all, we enjoyed our first DxDP meal. As we left the restaurant, the rain continued-but it wasn't anything torrential.

We returned to the Coronado, and the text that had come in as we began to eat at Wolfgang's informed me our room was ready on the 4th floor of Casitas 5. I was excited to see if we would have one of the infamous towel animals (I thought we had a good chance since we were celebrating our anniversary). David swung the door open and dutifully checked the mattress and linens for bedbugs. ALL CLEAR!

The king room was very nicely cleaned and I had a refrigerator that worked great! (Very good news for my insulin.) Then I noticed we didn't have the doors to the sink area and I walked over to check it out. The sink was sparkling and had all the little extra's they leave for lotion, soap, shampoo, etc. Then I looked to my right and saw a large opening to the bathroom. WOW - - it was HUGE! I could have put a huge chair in between the toilet and the bathtub which had a shower handle and a tiled seat at the end. It dawned on me that they had given me a handicap room even though I didn't request one. (I did have a scooter but hadn't picked it up from behind the concierge desk yet). I was tickled pink!!! That shower was going to make life so much easier for me. I will remember to request this room for my accommodations in future ressies.

So, I didn't get the towel animal, but I did get Pixie Dust in my room layout. I had read in another TR a month or so ago that someone complained the king bed was just about on the floor in a handicap room-which is why I hadn't requested on. Although the bed is lower than my daughter's was, it was nowhere near being on the floor. I sat comfortable on the edge with my feet on the floor. (No pic's since basically it looked like Mel's. Didn't think about the bathroom - sorry.)

So, we took our showers and hit the bed for a few hours of rest. Ahhh - didn't take long to fall asleep.

When Melanie and I were making all of our reservations and decisions for this trip, I can't tell you how many times we changed restaurants. However, one of my first picks was The Yachtsman Steakhouse at the Yacht Club. At the beginning Melanie was against a 2 ticket dinner but agreed to let me have my pick...while dubbing it "the stupid expensive steak dinner". It was typed this way on the calendar she had created and remained that was as a standing joke between us. The ressies were set for 9:15 p.m. and we arrived shortly ahead of time using their Valet service. (FYI for disabled readers: valet is a free service if you have a handicap plate/plaquard. We always tipped the valet well in return.)

David and Chris checked us in and when asked responded that we were both celebrating our anniversaries. We waited about 15 min's in a small section between the lounge and check-in. Behind us was the room where they aged the beef. Oh my - the meat looked so wonderful...I knew it would melt in our mouths!

I am not sure if many realize it is nearly impossible to find a restaurant that serves a truly "Prime" cut of beef. Even prime rib is of choice grade in top restaurants. So, David and I already had decided the Prime New York would be our selection and eyed the steaks in the window like kids in front of a toy store display.

We were led to our 4 top table that had ample room for everyone to remain comfortable throughout the evening. The table service was set nicely and did not disappoint my expectations.

We hadn't informed any of the restaurants of our celebrations since we didn't realize you should do that. (We had secured most of them 180 days out.) However, they did have Anniversary menu's for both couples which they allow you to take home with you; a nice souvenir.

I need to place a picture of David and I here, the reason why will come into play later on in this posting.

David ordered his usual Coca-Cola and I decided to have an Iced-Tea (after ensuring it wasn't Mango infused). It came out so cute with it's own platter of lemon, different sugars, and a small pitcher of simple syrup. I only used lemon in my tea, so I don't know what the syrup was like but thought it was quite unique. The iced-tea had a very fresh, clean taste. I definitely had refills.

Our waiter, whose name was David, couldn't have been more helpful or responsive to a diner's needs. He helped in choosing our orders, answering any questions and keeping on top of refills all at a perfectly slow pace of food delivery. (Food never came out before you were finished with what was in front of you first. Nor did you ever feel rushed.)

For our appetizers, I ordered the Seared Maine Diver Scallops: Sunchoke Puree, Heirloom Apple, and Red Quinoa Salad $14.00
(I can't pass up Scallops! )

This was amazingly good! The scallops were so tenderly browned they practically fell apart in my mouth, and the mixture of the apple, sunchoke and Quinoa salad gave it a different taste and texture than I've ever had before.

David chose the Charcuterie Board after WD (Waiter David) highly suggested it to him. My David loves game meats and is also easy to experiment with new foods. The menu's online do not show this as an option.

The Charcuterie Board consists of Smoked Duck Sausage, Venison Terrine, Black and Blue Beef Tar-tare, Artisanal Cheese, and Accoutrements. $14.00

The raw steak melted in your mouth like butter. In fact, everything on the board was of top notch caliber. (We had had to try a bit of everything - like I said David always shares his food.) This appetizer was definitely an edible art show with a high grade of preparation.

For our entree's, we both chose the Prime New York Strip: 12-oz Strip Steak, Peppercorn Brandy Sauce, and White Cheddar Potato Gratin $42.00

I believe the image above is of Melanie's steak since David and I order our steak RARE! The knife actually seemed to float downwards through the steak it was so tender! I love brandy peppercorn sauce, of which David doesn't care for-so WDavid brought his in a small cup so that I could have extra; the sauce didn't fail to impress. The white cheddar potato gratin had just enough cheese and the potatoes were sliced paper thin. As good as it was, my stomach couldn't even begin to finish them. The steak did me in since I couldn't allow myself to leave any behind!

Wow - what a great din....Hold that thought. Here comes WDavid asking about dessert... did he say d-e-s-s-e-r-t??? ughhhhhhhhhhh. Day one and already having trouble, LOL. But how do you pass up dessert at such a fine restaurant??? Answer: You don't! Quit whining and go for it.

I chose the Mango Cheescake...


Ok.. No I didn't. LOL I ordered the Trio of Valrhona Chocolate: Peanut, Espresso and Salted Caramel $11.00
I don't like coffee flavor of any type, and therefore had a double chocolate and a salted caramel.

I enjoyed both flavors, but couldn't even begin to make a dent in any of them. Melanie liked the chocolate but didn't like the caramel at all. David thought they were all good.

David chose the Creme Brulee: Fresh berries and rolled chocolate. $8.00

Oh my... what a heavenly delight. He loved it, but also couldn't hardly put a dent in it. Now that I remember, I did finish what he didn't. It's really rather shallow and such a light custard you hardly know you're eating it. The fruit was dead-on fresh and burst with flavor. I left the chocolate stick behind.

The dinner totalled over $160.00, but of course all we had to pay was the tip. I left over 20% which WDavid earned every penny of. He was so personable and laughed at our jokes while treating us like we were long time repeat customers.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EATING HERE AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR DISNEY LIFETIME! Well worth 2 TS credits.

Oh yes, remember the picture of David and I before we began eating???

NEXT: Rope drop in the morning at Epcot. Will we make it? Will we have room for breakfast by the time morning comes along? You'll have to come back and find out.

The Yachtsman was awesome~ if you ever use the DDP, it's worth putting 2 TS aside to give this a try. I think even if I had an extra 1k in my pocket, it would be hard to spend this kind of money out of pocket.

Wahoo - you made it to my TR. Thanks for taking the time out of your hectic day today to read and leave me a message. Two of my favorite DIS'ers dropped in - what more could a gal ask for?

Will be looking for those spiders tomorrow. Glad Jasmine had 2 good flights and arrived safely in Florida. I've never been on a cruise but would love to take the Disney cruise to Alaska. My parents have traveled rather extensively including Europe, but always said Alaska won by far as their favorite trip.

You see...Melanie does look like a youngster...(lucky shiza) and her husband Chris, at a quick glance looks a bit like your husband since the only pic of your husband that I saw he had his head down...Facial hair and such...

Then I realized that Chris is a SON IN LAW (SIL) not Sister in Law (SIL) and am laughing so hard because I am an idiot. I also see that Mel had her birthday on the 18th, not that she turned 18....

That will teach me to read with talk radio on in the background!!!


Okay...now I need to go grab Baylor from school but will get back and do dome yoga in order to try and center myself to read again!!

I am so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read your post!!! What a hoot. I can see how SIL can be confusing and how you started off on the wrong track. But see, as a person doing their first TR with very view readers who are actually letting me know they're here - it tickles me to no end that you had to read it twice.
