Someone Please explain Mission Space to me

This ride is awesome!!! But if u feel Ill on spinny types of rides this isn't for U! It's kool cause it's also semi interactive u have buttons to press at certain times that go along with the movie that's being played. And if u happen 2 miss your cue the ride just goes ahead and does it 4 u! This was on of my fav rides at WDW!!

what it would be like to go into space, I would give this ride a try. I have gone on rides all over the country and nothing compares to this ride. I am interested in space travel and this is as close as I'll get in my life. I think it's an amazing experience, especially if you let yourself go and believe. To me it's a serious bit of Disney magic, :wizard: even if I feel a bit queasy when I "return" from Mars. I prefer to ride it first thing in the morning before I've eaten much. Any queasy feeling is not so bad that I need to sit down or stop doing other things afterwards. The queasiness depends on the person, as does the claustrophobia.

You only live once, right? ;)

It's not a "scary" ride...it's just sickening.
WOW! I think I'll pass this ride! I want to enjoy and have fun... I don't want to get sick! :headache:  :scared: :crazy2: :worried:

If you get motion sickness or have claustrophobia, I'd skip it -- why endanger a great vacation?

While I trust the reports of those here who were sickened, last time I was there I looked for all the staggering sick people who supposedly get off every ride and didn't see any. Lots of high fives and laughter, though.

I'm too chicken to do Big Thunder /Splash Mountain -- but I was just fine, so if it's a matter of being afraid, there's nothing here to scare you. My 8 year old niece did just fine.

I'm afraid of heights, but I love this ride... It has been toned down (we went when it was offered to AP's before opening day and I could have lost my cookies if I had let it bother me) I would not take a child that has problems dealing with motion sickness or riding in a car... Also, just b/c you meet the height requirement doesnt mean your child will be mentally able to handle this ride... GL & have fun

Wow, I wanted to ride this ride but I am claustraphobic and sometimes riding an elevator bothers me especially when the elevator is hot. I have no problems riding the Mountains, Soarin', and high speed roller coasters - no motion sickness for me. My DS, wants to ride it. He'll be 11 yrs when were there in Dec. DH doesn't do too well with spinning type rides. He has problems with his equalibrium after riding just your looping rollercoaster. I'm not sure if I should allow my DS to ride this ride by himself. Any input would be great. :wave2:

For some strange reason I have this thing about THROWING UP so I guess I will NOT be going on this ride :rotfl: . But thanks to you guys I have gotten enough info on it that I have the basic idea of what the ride is like and that is enough for me.

i didn't think it was scary at all nor did i feel clautrophobic ... a very big hangup for me:o that almost made me chicken out, more cause of being afraid of maybe losing it and actually pounding on the door ala the stewart post..wouldn't be the first time ,,, see the thread "me and the tom saywer caves" :rolleyes1

i think except for the little intense part at the first it feels like you are floating...if you have ever been on a mild hanging roller coaster ( no hills) is kind of feels like that just like you are floating.i loved it , didn't think it was a"thrill" ride but i thought it was very fun but did obey all the rules but so did hubby and he got sick as a dog...he is prone to motion sickenss and didn't take anything pre ride ( hate to say" i told you so" but i did utter that phrase many times that day, bad me)

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: not that i don't feel your pain but YF just makes me laugh just thinking about it
(puttin on the ritzzzzz) :rotfl: :rotfl:

I get claustrophobic and/or motion sick if I'm in the backseat of a HOT car (or if DH is driving! ;) ), but that's about it... I was mostly worried about the enclosed space. They have nice, cool, moving air blowing on you the entire time - made it OK with me.

DH was worried about the car thing (of course, he's never been in the passenger seat while he's driving... ). He went to the ride's exit, and bought Dramamine - and insisted I take it before we rode.

Yeah, it was a little intense, but I'm pretty sure I could do it without the Dramamine - though we didn't get to test the theory, as a day or two later, I came down with a head cold, and wasn't gonna try it! LOL.

I tried to go on this ride last year but i became sick before entering the park.
I just went ont the other rides after feeling better. I heard other people saying their
husbands and girlfriends came out sick  Other said if you take coffee with some medicine before the ride you be ok. I did not know there was
a ride prequiste for taking a disney ride. :confused3 .I will probally skip it this year.

But seriously, to everyone that is thinking of bailing out - go through the preshow at least. See the queue line. It's one of the best. And the "chicken exit" (I hate calling it that) is soooooo guest friendly. Right after the preshow, the Cast Members will again ask for exiting people. That's your cue to go. You will be able to stay with your family and experience nothing but great Disney theming.

I can't handle a ferris wheel but love Mission:Space.

It was awesome! :cool1: My DD5, DD10 and me went on it twice. It is not for anyone who gets dizzy spinning around. My DH who is proned to motion sickness was going to try it but after the fifth or six warning as we approached the area where you go into 'space ship' I convinced him not too - glad I did because he would have been soooo sick for the next day or so. If you can't do the tilt-a-whirl - stay off. For those of you who really like to spin, it is incredible - never experienced anything like it before. You can feel the skin on your face pull back from the G force.

The feeling of "blasting off" comes from the force exerted when the capsule you are in starts to spin. The difference is that you do not realize you are spinning because of the capsule screen you are monitoring. Your only clue that you are spinning is that you will feel pressure forcing you back into your seat and again with the screen in front of you, you are tricked into feeling like you are "taking off".

So the problem with most on this ride is dealing with motion sickness issues. You are spinning but being fooled into believing that you are blasting off.

That explains it! Last week I spoke with a friend of mine (very reliable adult) who rode MS. He assured me that there is "no spinning at all", bc. that was my concern. I cannot tolerate rides like "Tea Cups" bc of the spinning. I guess my firend was one of the ones fooled into believing that there was no spinnning.

What's frustrating is that every time there is a thread on MS there are so many conflicting opinions and experiences! Some who say they are prone to motion sickness but did fine on MS. Others who say they can ride ANTHING but got sick after MS. I'm opting for not trying it, but I cannot get over the feeling that I'm missing something. DS13 wants to try it. He's our dare-devil. I'm going to advise him about what I've read here and tell him to try it at the end of our day.

Glad I read this thread!

For paladin - Rock N Roller Coaster gives me a headache too. I think it's because it jerks around so much.

Wow - I thought it was just me! :confused3 I had an instant headache as soon as the Rock N Roll Coaster took off. Could be I was just too tense, desperately trying to keep my head back against the headrest to avoid whiplash! :rotfl:

My 13 yo DD went on Mission Space without me (I was too scared I would get sick. It's the only ride I skipped at all of WDW). She got off feeling pretty ill, and felt nauseous for the next few hours. She said, at the time, she would never go on it again.

Well, we're going back in December and of course, she really wants to go back on Mission Space. And I'm still not going on it. But I will go on RnR coaster - I'll just try to relax.

I just had to add a couple of comments. We just returned last Wednesday from a week at DW. It was great and one of the things my son and I wanted to make sure to do was MS. We had first done it 2 years ago, evidently before it "officially" opened. Interesting that folks say it has been toned down, as I thought we maybe had just gotten used to it this time.

I'm 51 and it is only in the last few years that I have come to appreciate and love roller coasters. However, as others have said, this is not like a coaster. Anyway, I remember two years ago that we both walked in very apprehensive about it. We both walked out dumbfounded and incredibly impressed and immediately jumped back in line for another trip. I must admit I didn't know what to expect and for a moment (during liftoff) I was concerned because of my less-than-perfect heart. But it was a blast! (no pun intended)

In hindsight, I think I enjoyed it so much the first time because I had no idea how it was accomplished. Now that I know it is a centrifuge and that we are spinning, it almost takes away some of the magic. And of course "knowing how" lets your mind sense the spinning that it previously was not aware of. At least it did with me. We went on it twice the first year and twice again this year. If we had had time we may have tried it again before we left, but it was not to be. I also felt we may have been pushing our luck to try it three times in relatively short succession.

In closing, if you do decide to do it, as others have emphasized, LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD AND FOCUS ON THE SCREEN IN FRONT OF YOU. In addition to helping with eliminating any sensing of spinning, you'll let yourself enjoy the storyline and hopefully get so caught up in the action, you won't be aware of anything other than having the space ride of your life!

P.S. My son is 15. My wife and 17 year old daughter wanted nothing to do with it. :)

MS definitely does spin. It is a centrifuge as earlier posters have stated. This is why they tell you to look straight ahead and not close your eyes. If you do so, you can fool yourself into thinking that you are not spinning since your point of focus is not moving. You feel just the force pushing you back in the seat. If you close your eyes, you will experience the spinning more since you lose your reference point.

Mission Space?!?!?!?!?

The worst ride ever. I don't know how it is safe and fun. You want to talk about being helpless!! That's the ride for you? Another 30 seconds and I would have lost it. Thank goodness you stay on Mars and not have to travel to Uranus or Pluto or even back to Earth!! I was happy to stagger off the ride. My friend told me I looked green in the face. I was glad to relinquish my fast pass ticket. I learned during those long minutes I could never be an astronaut!

welcome to the dis.. go look over by the piano for more fun on the dis..
