Someone just tried to tell me that Cars 2 IS inappropriate...

I grew up on much more violent cartoons with Loony Tunes and Melody Makers. We've now introduced our 9 year old to them, and he loves them.

I am another one who enjoyed Cars 2, as did my son. I thought it was better than the first Cars, actually.

Looeny Toons, Scooby Doo, GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, Superman, Batman, Those kids dressed on monocolor outfits using martial arts to defeat monsters who shoot laser beams out of their eyes.

I could go on. In just about every circumstance, there is violence in cartoons on that level.

Maybe they only watch Vegetails?

I asked this earlier and didn't get a response yet. I haven't seen Cars 2. Is the violence like Loony Tunes/Warner Brothers violence, where there is no suspense, the violence is very short-lived, and no one is really hurt?

Our family enjoyed Cars 2 - however, it was quite a bit more violent than the first one. It really seemed like they did a 180 with the plot in terms of violence.

I was somewhat disturbed during the part in the film when the American Spy car was captured and subsequently "destroyed" by the demonstration. My son asked me if he died and I said no - he just has to go to the hospital to get fixed.

I also didn't appreciate the undertoned "big oil" message - I didnt find it necessary - especially in a kids film.

At least on two occasions Cars are killed.

You know, that's a good question. Some of the bad cars are blown up and we don't ever see them repaired, as I recall.

Now, I don't think you could pull this type of thing off with Bunnies 2. I think that fact that these were cars that can be taken apart and put back together made it a non issue for me and my son.

i'd have to go see it again to really answer you in detail... i was just enjoying watching the movie.

there is suspense... it is like a james bond spy movie...
there was a car crushed into a cube... i don't recall if it was still "alive"
ie:were its eyes moving or if t was "dead"...

So, for a more sensitive kid, or for one who views the characters as "people" and not "machines," it could be quite a bit different from a cartoon where Daffy Duck gets shot in the face and the only consequence is that he's temporarily blackened and he has to move his beak back into place.

And there is actually suspense as well. It's done like a spy thriller.

Is the suspense the type where you're waiting to see who wins a race, or waiting to see if someone gets blown up? Again, being anxious about the outcome of a competition is very different from being anxious about whether a loved character is going to "die."

Oh it's waiting to see if someone will get blown up. But didn't Toy Story have the same kind of suspense? Sid still gives me nightmares.

I would say both - there is racing but there is also scene's where a car is clearly destroyed (I actually kept waiting for someone to bust down the doors to rescue the American Spy).

I saw that Cars 2 was getting bad reviews but I didn't read any of them before I took my son to see it. The whole time I was watching it I kept wondering why everyone thought it was so bad. It's funny because I never really thought about the violence in the movie until I read this thread today. Looking back I can see how it "could" be a little scary for very young children, but I think for the most part it was fine. Most of that would go right over their heads. I really think that movies are made like that to entertain the parents aswell as the kids. Lets face it, if they were boring to us we might not be so quick to rush out and drop $50.00 on a movie for them.

But wasn't that always the moral complaint about those cartoons? That they were VERY violent, but no one suffered any ill effects from the violence?

Cars may have been geared to a preschooler set, but those are early elementary kids now who probably need a little more action in their sequel.

Sorry, if I had a 15 yo who was posting on a board with adults and had something like "By the way...I'm fifteen years old. I probably have better grammar and spelling than you, too.

Helping people sound more intelligent since 1995" in her signature I'd hope people would give her a smack down. There is a teen board on here for a reason.

No.

::yes:: As a 17 year old, I'm embarrassed. I hope no one here finds me that condescending in any of my posts.
