Here is my opinion about the locations.
OKW-- The first and oldest of the DVC resorts. It has a vacation home/townhouse feel with the units arranged in cluster buildings around a golf course with ponds and a water way. It tends to be quieter and more homey with parking right outside your door and several pool areas to chose from.
BWV--The second DVC resort located in the popular Boardwalk area with a close walk to both Epcot and MGM theme parks. Location is considered to be the prime thing here. Down side for some might be the hotel rather than vacation home atmosphere and the long hallways of a hotel. Also, parking is in a valet lot some distance from the hotel.
VWL-- The third DVC resort located at the popular Willderness Lodge. Decor and embiance tp the key here. This is also a hotel type resort, but is somewhat more quiet and low key than BWV. Here again you will park in a valet log some distance from the hotel.
The newest is BCV and will open this summer. It is now on sale only from Disney, so you wont find a resale here. It too is in the Boardwalk area, and right next to the International entrance to Epcot. Again a hotel type resort with valet parking away from the hotel.

Just a piece of advice:
Since DVC is a signifigant financial commitment (initial investment plus dues for many years to come); why don't you rent some points off the DVC boards and take a trip to see them all for yourself?
We too got lots of good advice from these boards, then decided to go and take a look ourselves. Remember, everyone has their own personal tastes. Good thing we did, because where I was "sure" we would end up buying from reading these boards (BWV); we quickly found out it was not our "cup of tea" (not BWV bashing, just not for us). We found that OKW was a better fit for numerous reasons and ended up buying a resale there.
So, why not schedule a quick trip (there seem to be a few good prices on air fare these days); and spend some time at each one? If you rent points, you will be staying at one and that only leaves 3 more to visit!

Get all the information you can! A good guide should be willing to mail you literature on all resorts and even a video. You don't have to buy through Disney. It all depends on how comfortable you are doing business with a realtor long distance. I chose Disney. The best advice is take a trip and to tour the resorts. that is the only way to truly get an appreciation. Just be careful to decide whether any special offers interest you in case a guide tries to tempt you with a discounted offer on points. I believe some offers expire within a cetain time period if you take an official tour with a guide. Main points:
1)Get all available literature and videos
2)check out resorts on your own to see what resort you prefer
3)take an official tour when you have discovered your favorite
4)ALWAYS buy only where you really want to stay so you can take the most advantage of the 11 month window to reserve.
5)Look at the point charts to decide how many points to buy to get the experience you desire at the time of year you want to travel.
6)Use this board extrensively. There are a lot of good people that will answer your questions.
If you plan your purchase I doubt you'll be disappointed. You can arrange to stay at most of the resorts. I investigated OKW by taking an American Airlines vacation even though there were no rooms available though Disney. I believe Disney rents out a small percentage of rooms (4%) even though most people stay at various resorts because they own there.
You can reserve 11 months ahead at your home resort and only 7 months ahead at non-home resorts. I have not had a problem reserving at the 7 months period at non-home resorts but why take a chance. I prefer OKW but all resorts are great.
Addendum: I am not saying stay at each resort. You'll go broke testing them all. I am suggesting to stay at the one you think you'd prefer and then tour the other DVC resorts while you are there vacationing.
