We were at BB today and DH was sitting with DS in the sandbox. There was a woman there with 2 children. Well one of them wanted to play in the sand and the other wanted to go on the water slides (the children were around the ages of 1 and maybe 5), so the woman asked a total stranger if she would watch her 1 year old. Does anyone else find this odd. For one, I would not ask a stranger to watch my child and two, what if the child got hurt while the mother was gone, the person who agreed to watch the child would be responsible. Not to mention it's a crazy world we live in with crazy people.

Whoa! I find it odd, for sure....

But one time at a grocery a woman asked my mom and I to watch her baby while she used the rest room. We said yes only because we were afraid she would just leave the cart sit while she ran in. :(

YES!!!! My DH sat there just shocked at the fact that the lady asked but even more shocked that the stranger agreed.

How irresponsible! We were at WDW last week and since my DD6 just had her Appendix taken out we got a stroller for her because she was having stomach pain- still!! Anyway, we kept thinking we lost her and kept looking for her when she was in front of us in her stroller! I was fanatical about a six year old who knows her address etc... how could someone leave thier 1 year old?

The mother of that child is an idiot. The person that agreed to watch the kid is also an idiot. If something happened to that kid can you imagine the problems? UGH.

Doesn't surprise me at all, unfortunately. When I was a waitress, many people asked me to watch their children (run around the restaurant) while they 'enjoyed' their meal.

Also, one of my first jobs was in a infant furniture section of a discount dept store. We had all sorts of infant items set up for display like high chairs, cribs and playpens. You would not believe how many people would put their small children in the playpens and walk away to shop!!!!! They wouldn't even stay close by...we had to hunt them down.

My manager used to use the PA system to ask "Would the parents of the beautiful child left alone in the playpen display please come and claim him/her?" It still didn't stop. We put up signs mentioning safety. Still continued..... until we eventually filled the cribs and playpens with pillows boxes and stuffed animals to the top.

The really funny thing was how indignant parents would be when they finally showed up, they acted as if this was normal.

People are unbelievable!!!!!

I take it then, that the mother didn't mean just for a minute or two. :( Crazy!

Last summer, I was walking my dog and some kooky woman came out of her house and asked it I lived farther up the street. When I said yes, she asked if her son could walk with me since he was hoping to play with the boys who live near my house. He was much older than the child you're talking about here (I guess 11 or 12), but I still thought it was a very odd thing to ask a complete stranger to do.

I said he could walk with me, but I was going out once I got to my house. (I didn't want her to think I was going to babysit him.)

I can't imagine sending my own kid off with a stranger like that. Takes all kinds to make a world, I suppose.

I haven't walked my dog anywhere near her house since. The kid clearly had some problems, and I have no desire to have her ask me to walk him somewhere again. I don't want the responsibility.

Am I suprised? No, because I've had people drop their children off in my store and go shop elsewhere. We're talking 4 or 5 year olds!

Yes, I would be bothered. That is completely insane. OMG!! I cannot imagine leaving my 1 yr old or my child of any age for that matter with a stranger!!! There are some whacked out people out there.

That is insane!!!

I am praying now that hopefully the person she asked wasnt at all a stranger and somehow they knew each other while it may not have been obvious to others watching..... Does that make sense? Good heavens I hope this is the case.

Parents like this drive me crazy. But you know what the real kicker is? Nothing bad will happen to their children. It's those of us that watch our children carefully that still have things happen.

When we were at WL last summer I can't tell you the number of parents that put their young children (under 2) in the kiddie pool and then went and sat on a lounge chair not really watching their children. I guess since either DH or I were sitting right their with our DD they figured we'd watch their children as well. I remember after pulling this one children from under the water for the 3rd time I went to get a lifeguard and took DD to the big pool while things got straightened out. This kid's mom was a good 20 ft from her child facing the opposite direction  .
