Solo female - first floor or higher for safety - ASMu

Well @ Dustykins I don't think you're overthinking this you are just unsure and want helpful advice from helpful people on these boards. I recently returned from a great solo stay at Music in a preferred room. My post can be found in the ASMusic resort thread. My requests were non connecting 3rd floor room Calypso. I was fortunate and got all my requests in building 10. My requests weren't for safety reasons but health ones. Because of health issues I use a cane and walk very slow so being close to the food court and busses is important to me. But in all my solo trips and I have had numerous ones I have always felt safe at Disney no matter where my room was. I am sure all these helpful and reassuring responses from everyone here will help you make the best decision for you. Enjoy your solo stay at ASMusic. I know I did.

Always go with upper floor room in any hotel especially a motel style layout with outside corridors. This is a common request known in the hotel industry and most room assigners and front desk in properties outside the Disney bubble will try to anticipate this for solo women guests and women with children. At Disney, they simply assign at random. I always ask at check in for an upper floor for many reasons not just personal security. Upper floor tends to be less noisy. I've also traveled to WDW in hurricane season and stayed at POP. I watched the rain water pooling and starting to run under the doors of first floor rooms. For specifics, this was the "hoops hotel" building at POP. It's your vacation. Make yourself as comfortable as possible so you can enjoy it fully.
Just to clarify,Hoops Hotel is at All-Star Sports.

I'm a frequent solo female and have never felt unsafe or been in any situation at WDW that would be of concern. For many years I have gone to WDW solo 98% of the time - and I normally request a 1st floor room b/c I use an ECV. People are there to have a great vacation - Just use common sense - just like anyplace!

This will be my 4th trip solo to Disney, at either ASMusic or ASMovies, always request upper floor, standard room. The only time I felt 'uncomfortable' was when I was given a 1st floor handicapped accessible room at Movies (Ducks). I didn't like being on ground level. Feeling uncomfortable didn't stop me from walking over to Music, though!

My current dilemma is I am booked solo at Music, standard room, for 3 nights in November (after 3 nights at CSR with DD). Last November I got pixie dusted and they upgraded me, free, to preferred. I always laughed at the thought of paying more for being closer, but maaaannnnn... it was really nice, being in Calypso instead of Broadway or Rock Inn. I know there were nights that I wouldn't have gone back out after taking a break, if I'd had to walk from the back of the resort to get to the bus. Now I can't decide... is it worth the extra $$ a night to upgrade to preferred? I really did like being "right there' in Calypso! I think I got spoiled!

Well @ leebee I recently returned from a solo stay at ASMusic in a preferred room. I had a non connecting 3rd floor room Calypso building 10. It was a great location. For me I don't think I was spoiled I know I was spoiled. Any future stays at ASMusic for me will definitely be preferred room. It is worth the extra $$ to me. Enjoy your stay whatever you decide. I know I did.

Another solo woman and like others have never felt unsafe at WDW. I've stayed at almost every resort on property (haven't stayed at WL, SS, Riv or AoA). I never purposely get a preferred room, I did get one once at CS just because it was actually less than a standard room. I have never made a specific room request. Often when I check in, which I always do on line but also go to the front desk when I arrive since I usually arrive before my room is ready, the front desk person will notice I'm solo and assign me to an upper floor room. I have stayed on the bottom floor and didn't have any issues with it. I do always have both locks on my door on if I'm in my room and am always aware of my surroundings even in the day time. The only time I'm even slightly uncomfortable is walking from Epcot to the Dolphin. There is a small spot between YC and Dolphin which is slightly wooded (to hide the behind the scenes) and for some reason it gives me the shivers. I just either take the boat from BW or walk the BW side and approach from Swan to avoid it. That is only at night.

I'm traveling solo for the first time in March. I booked a preferred room at ASMu to be closer to the lobby for safety reasons (although I've never felt unsafe on Disney property). I'm thinking ahead a little to making room requests. Is it smarter to pick a corner ground floor room and avoid stairwells and those dark corridors in the middle or to be on an upper floor? I'm probably completely overthinking this.
I've gone solo to WDW for over 25 years, probably about 25 times and I always request upper floor. It used to be for just what you say-safety. One time they assigned me a first floor room, and I was "that" guest, pleading with the front desk to move me-I wouldn't be able to sleep, etc. But then it happened a second time-I got a first floor room, and I was too embarrassed to say anything. But it was fine. I still request upper floor, but that's because I like the view better. Plus there's this irrational fear of snakes getting in.

Oh, that irrational fear! The higher the floor, the better, IMO. Allow me my delusions! I will say, the ONE time we rented an offsite villa on the first floor, my niece found a scorpion in her shoe, so... :scared1:

OP, I don't think you are being irrational. Yes, many people are there to have a great vacation, but unfortunately, there are unsavory people on property doing unkind things all the time. We just don't hear about it as much. When DD and I go, I pay for preferred room, request an upper floor, keep the curtain closed, and use all the locks when we are in the room. If it's dark and I feel uneasy, I call someone while I walk to my room. That has only happened a couple of times. I feel relatively safe in the Disney bubble, but WDW is part of the real world and they have security for a reason. I think if you choose a room location that you will enjoy that you will be okay. Have a great trip!

I like having a preferred room. If I want to refill my drink or run down for a snack I don't want to feel like it is inconvenient. And it would feel that way to me if I was in a standard room.

Just to note for others that Jazz is considered a preferred building as well - so you could book preferred and not be put in Calypso but be the next buildings back.
