Solo Eats and Newbie Treats - Completed 1/28!

Yikes! I missed the start of this! I blame it on being away with my pupils for a week! ;)

Couldn't agree with you more on Starring Rolls. The sandwiches are HUGE. We split one and a cupcake and were both full!

And our experiences at Kona were really similar! Long wait, good food, not really what I would call perfect service!

Can't wait for more! popcorn::

Hey I would miss a DR for a trip to Vienna any day!

Again, this is one of those time where I wish I had taken more photos of the restaurant and its surroundings. Sorry for lack of photographic delights!

The next day I went to Epcot. After a morning in FW, I started to get hungry so I made my way back in to the WS. I had an exact destination in mind, where I had never eaten before, and have been wanting to for a long time - Tangierine Cafe!

I LOVE Middle Eastern cuisine (OK so Morocco isn't the middle east, but falafel and hummus can surely be called middle eastern cuisine, right?). I eat it as often as I can, and have been to Israel, so I feel like I have high standards for what constitutes good middle eastern food.

So, with a lot for Tangierine Cafe to live up to, I got in line. I decided to order the Lamb Schawarma Platter, which is served with tabbouleh, couscous salad, hummus, tzatziki sauce, and bread.

march8.jpg

I was almost drooling when I found a table outside in the shade to sit down at for my feast. This plate was $12, which is a lot for a CS meal, but it is a TON of food! You could easily share a platter, I would just buy some extra bread and tzatziki. I know they also accept DDP, so it's a big bang for your CS credit.

The schawarma meat was delicious! It was moist, not too greasy, flavorful with some herbs and spices and they carved it right when I ordered it so it hadn't been sitting around getting cold and hard. My only complaint about it was that I prefer my schawarma meat sliced thin, but I suppose I could just ask for that next time. There must have been a 1/2 pound of meat on the plate!

The hummus was quite good too - smooth and creamy. The tabbouleh was fresh, lemony, and bright. There was nothing wrong with it, but I prefer a lower parsley to wheat ratio. the couscous salad was good as well, giving the platter a point of sweetness, with fruit (raisins or currents? I can't remember) and maybe some apple juice in the mix. The pita bread was pretty standard - like the Tofuyan brand you get in the grocery store, but perfectly acceptable, and a great vehicle to put schawarma and tzatziki on!

Speaking of the tzatziki sauce, it had a good flavor, but it was too thin and watery to me.

Overall, I REALLY enjoyed this meal. In fact, I like Tangierine Cafe better than it's TS counterpart, Restaurant Marrakesh. Good thing too - it's a lot cheaper and there's no ADR required!

A- (for boring bread and watery tzatziki sauce)

After my lunch in Morocco, I hopped my way around a couple of countries over to France! Ahhh La Belle France! This is my favorite WS country and I don't pretend to not have any bias about it. I lived in France while working as an au pair, so going to the France pavilion in Epcot is like a little taste of my second home. I try to force myself to engage and converse with some of the CM's, but then it becomes apparent how horribly rusty my French is getting. :upsidedow Guess I should go to Disney more so I can practice, huh? ;)

Anywho...I had been wanting to try one of the frequently talked about slushies from the Crepe stand. After much deliberation, I decided to go with Grand Marnier Slush over the Grey Goose Citron variety.

march11.jpg

:cloud9: Oh my. Love at first sip! This was sooooo good! I love frozen drinks, I love Grand Marnier in anything, and this wasn't too strong for me. I'm a lightweight, so I like a lot of Disney drinks because they're skimpy on the booze. This had just enough that I could taste it...exactly how I like it! I was able to walk around and sip on my slushie and not feel so affected I needed to sit down.

I wish they served it in a different kind of glass though. The martini glass is pretty, but they spill so easily! It's fine when you're in a restaurant or lounge sitting at a table, but walking around with on is a recipe for losing your precious booze in my book! And my cup was overflowing, so I did spill a little. :sad2:

The Grand Marnier Slushie gets an A from me! I would have given an A+ if it was in a more travel friendly cup.

I can't wait to try the Grey Goose Citron and the Cosmo Slush!

After my day in Epcot, I headed over to AKV Kidani Village for my ADR at Sanaa. It was my first time visiting Sanaa and Kidani.

I was pretty early, but I took the opportunity to hang out at the observation area outside the lobby.

A few snapshots:

Looking back towards the lobby

march42.jpg

The animals were out and active, it was so great. I loved Kidani - the design and feel are wonderful. The lobby was like a smaller, more intimate version of Jambo house.

Ok enough about about animals and architecture, this is a food report!

I went to check in right at my ADR time (5:15pm) and was seated immediately. The interior of the restaurant is really neat. It feels like you're in a spice market under the shade of trees with the clay pot columns and the gourd and basket-shaped lanterns hanging from 'branches'.

march51.jpg

There are a few large arched window spaces one side of the restaurant that offer a direct view of the savannah. I got to watch the animals graze as I grazed (ok, more like gorged). There are a few tables right next to the windows that offer fantastic views, but you can see pretty well 2-3 tables back from the windows too.

My server for the evening was Carrie. She was very enthusiastic and attentive. She seemed knowledgeable about the menu and help accomodate special requests with no problem. Even though she had a a few other tables with 4-6 people a piece, I didn't feel neglected as a solo diner.

I just got water to drink, and started off with the Salad Sampler. You get to chose three different salads from a selection of five. The top bowl is the Chickpea, Cucumber, and Tomato. On the left is the Roasted Beets, and the right dish is the Watermelon, Lime, and Radish.

march52.jpg

These were all good, but I can easily rank my favorites. The Chickpea salad was great, but had the least appeal to me. The roasted beets would be my middle choice - sweet and earthy, served cold. They were simple and perfect. But my absolute winner was the Watermelon, Lime, and Radish. This was amazing - cool, sweet, crunchy, sour, bitter, and tart all in one great symphony.

I had such a hard time deciding what to order for my entree, but finally settled on the Slow Cooked in Gravy, Simple, and Well-Seasoned. This dish has the same concept as the salad sampler. I got to choose two meat dishes out of three, and one of two grain items. I went with the Chicken in Red Curry Sauce, Beef Short Ribs, and 5 Grain Pilaf.

march53.jpg

I knew that the dishes at Sanaa were not going to be very spicy, and I had read here on the DIS you could ask them to 'kick things up a notch'. So for the Chicken Curry, I asked Carrie about making it hotter, and she explained that I could tailor the spice level myself. She brought me out a dish of the spice paste with my entree so I could add and mix to my desired level of hotness. What a great idea! No dealing with a 'medium' that has no kick or a 'mild' that makes me want to go join the animals at a water trough!

The chicken was delicious. The meat was cooked nicely, not too dry or tough in the least. The curry sauce was delicious and unlike any curry I've had before. It was more the consistency of a thick tomato sauce instead of the thin gravy you get on most curry dishes.

The short ribs were very simple, and cooked to perfection. They just fell apart and the meat was so tender and juicy. They were very minimally seasoned, and not at all spicy, so if you don't like spicy food, this would be a great dish to order at Sanaa.

The pilaf was amazing. I love my carbs, and this mix was very interesting. I could pick out wild and red rice, but I'm not sure what the other grains were. Something was very nutty and complex-flavored though. I think there was just a bit of butter, salt, and maybe some broth used to cooked these. It was a great palate cooler after a bit of the chicken curry, and it also worked nicely to sop up the juices from the short rib dish.

I couldn't pick a favorite of my 3 entree dishes. They were all amazing and I would recommend any of them!

I continued the sampler trend with dessert and went with the Dessert Sampler - Chocolate Cake, Chai Cream, and Passion Fruit Kulfi. (Can you tell I'm indecisive when it comes to ordering food? :rotfl: )

march54.jpg

The cake was no big whoop. It was just a very plain chocolate layered cake, and it was a bit on the dry side. I wouldn't order it.

But the other two dishes......

The Chai Cream was amazing. I love Chai - hot, cold, latte, frozen, in any form, and now I can add as a Cream to the list. This was a cold, heavy cream with the robust tea and spice flavors chai provides. It was very pudding like texture, except it felt like it had more mass to it. I just saw the recipe for this posted on the Disney Food Blog, and now I know that unique feeling and texture is because they put gelatin in the mix. So don't order this if you're a vegetarian! If you are an omnivore, however.....prepare for a taste of ecstasy!

The Passion Fruit Kulfi was excellent as well. Kulfi is sort of the Indian version of ice cream, but in the way that gelato is different than ice cream, kulfi is different, but still a frozen dairy dessert. When I first took a bite, the kulfi felt like sorbet landing on my tongue (icy and fruity), but quickly became smooth and light like a gelato. The passion fruit flavor was sweet but not overwhelmingly so, and the strawberry sauce on top was a great combo.

Next time, I will try seeing if I could get two kulfis and no cake!

As you can tell by now, Sanaa was an amazing feast of delicousness! It is my favorite non-signature/1 TS credit restaurant, and it's not far behind those signatures for me. I highly recommend the place, even if you're not that adventurous. The dishes are somewhat exotic, but they're not too heavily spiced, and there are many options. The staff seem willing to work with people in order to accommodate different preferences and are eager to show off their product. As another added bonus, Sanaa is still incredibly easy to get an ADR for! It's my hidden gem at Disney, but I hope it stays that way so it's easy to get in to and feels like a wonderful secret. :ssst:

An enthusiastic grade A !

Thanks for the review!

We love Sanaa too and I had about the same meal you had, in September! :goodvibes
Thanks for telling us about spicing it up and asking for it. We both said that the main course could have been a bit hotter, but now I know that I can ask for creating a little more kick!

Can't wait for more! popcorn::

Don't you love the DISboards? This is where I learned I could ask to spice it up.

Thanks for reading Karin!

I have never had good service at Kona. Ever. I have enjoyed the food, but our servers have always disappeared, even at breakfast when the restaurant was half-empty.

The next day, my friends Caitlin and Jun (DW and DH) drove down to Disney and met me at AK around 11am. Their first Disney meal would be at Yak n Yeti!

We had an ADR for 11:30 and were seated after a very short wait. I had been to Yak n Yeti twice before, so they asked me what was good and we decided to share some appetizers.

Caitlin and I had Cokes to drink, and Jun went for the Glacier Water. You can see it in this picture:
march59.jpg

It's a non-alcoholic beverage made from Blue Curacao, Coconut Syrup, and Sprite. I tasted it and it was very sweet. Kids would probably love it - sugary and blue!

For our first appetizer, we shared the Wok Fried Green Beans:
march57.jpg

I loved these before and they were just as good this time around. Breaded and fried to a perfect crisp, served with a sweet Thai chili dipping sauce. Making healthy things unhealthy by breading and deep frying them is just genius. :rotfl:

We also shared the Pork Egg Rolls:
march58.jpg

These come with a chili plum sauce, but I requested the thai chili sauce that comes with the friend green beans instead.

I think these are some of the best egg rolls anywhere. They have a nice ratio of meat to veggies in the filling, and they don't cook them til the cabbage gets slimy-feeling. They're always hot and fresh from the fryer. Some days they've been greasier than others, but this time, they were just perfect.

The portions are pretty large at Yak N Yeti, so we after the appetizers we decided to split 2 entrees.

I had raved about them before, so we had an order of the Baby Back Ribs - slow-roasted ribs brushed with hoisin BBQ sauce, served with chicken fried rice and sweet chili slaw.
DSCN0473.jpg

I forgot to get a photo of our ribs, so that photo is actually from the last time I ate them. But they looked the same, I promise!

These were also just as wonderful as I remember. The ribs are just fall off the bone tender. They're moist and flavorful and my favorite ribs I've had anywhere. We devoured them pretty quickly! The chili slaw wasn't as good as last time though - there was way too much oil in the dressing. The fried rice was good, but nothing special. Just your standard corner take out joint sort of thing.

Our other entree selection was the Malaysian Seafood Curry - Mahi Mahi, scallops, little neck clams, mussels, shrimp, zucchini, roma tomatoes, red curry coconut broth, and jasmine rice.
march60.jpg

I almost forgot to take a photo of this dish too, and by the time I remembered we had eaten half of it! So it looks much prettier when it's first served. (Don't you love the plate of clean rib bones in the background? :rotfl: )

This was another hit! The seafood was delicious, not overcooked or rubbery. It had a great flavor from the curry broth, which I would describe as a mild thai style red curry. I am dreaming of ordering this dish again next time I go!

We were quite stuffed, so we decided to skip dessert. I had to show Caitlin and Jun as much of AK as I could in 5 hours!

I love Yak and Yeti, and this time was no different. An A rating!

Mmh, Yak and Yeti ....... and you had some of my favourite things!!!

Those fried beans are to die for! Yum, yum!!
Love the eggrolls as well, even though we have it with the plum sauce

Tom loves the ribs ........ BUT I am missing MY cream cheese wontons! :scared1: :rotfl2:

AK in 5 hours - :scared1: Very brave to attempt!

Thanks for sharing, love it as usual! :thumbsup2

Hi! Just wanted to pop in and let you know how much I enjoyed your Yak n Yeti review. We have a lunch ADR there for Jan and my DH is so psyched. It is totally his kind of menu!
Random question... I know it is in AK so there are always lots of kids - but we are going to be bringing along DS 10 months.(he can sit in a high chair) - Did you happen to see any babies in there? It just seems everyone I know that likes YnY are adults or families with teens...
(oh yes and my 3 year old will be great with the menu- she's a smart girl - she'll be stealing some of those ribs for sure! :) ) Awesome report!

I had the Cream Cheese Wontons on the visit before this one and they were not anything I would order again. They just didn't do it for me.

AK in 5 hours didn't go so well - we got caught in a major downpour and they closed EE so we didn't get to use our FP's!!! We got to see a few things before the rain closed down most of the park though.

what fabulous reviews!

I want those unhealthy fried "healthy" green beans;) right now, please. Really like Yak & Yeti. The curry looks great too.:thumbsup2

I am seriously obsessed with Yak and Yeti. I had already read your review, but came back for more because I am seriously doubting my ability to wait until January to eat there. I might have to drive across the country to have some shrimp tempura and skirt steak. Or just look at your review, again and again...sad, haha. Great reviews though!
