Sofa Sleeper comfort

I have never rented points....but I'm considering it for our upcoming trip in the spring. It will be myself and two teenagers (15yo by then).

Many of the units I've looked at have one bed (Q or K) and a sofa sleeper. I'm wondering about the comfort of the sofa sleeper. We've tried this at hotels in the past and well, let's face it the mattress on the sofa sleeper is pretty thin and therefore uncomfortable to sleep on. Because these DVC units are probably meant for families, I'm wondering if perhaps they are of better quality and more comfortable (i.e. thicker) to sleep on?

Thank you for any insight you can give.

We've found the ones where the cushions stay attached and flip under when you open up the bed seem to be more comfortable for sleeping. We've had this type at BCV. The ones with the platforms and the memory foam, are a bit harder - these were at SSR and OKW. We had the older style with the bar under the mattress at VWL, but they may have been changed out.

But all of the newer ones (memory foam and attached cushions) are rather hard for sitting when they are not made up as a bed.

The ones at AKLV's are horrible! We stayed in a one-bedroom villa last May and it was so hard that I couldn't sleep. I'd given my daughter and her husband the actual bedroom. We switched after the first night as there was no way I could spend another night on that bed. As they were only staying with me one more night, then each of us only had to suffer one night!---Kathy

In my opinion, some sofa sleepers sleep better than other sofa sleepers but none are as comfortable as a bed.

Old Key West studios have two queens.

In all the one bedrooms, master bedroom has one king, and then you will have a queen sofa sleeper.

Kathy, are those the memory foam on the platform or the ones where the cushions stay attached and flip under when you open the bed?

Reading through these answers always reminds me that a good bed is something very different to different people. I need (not just want) a somewhat hard mattress; if its soft, under my weight it turns into a sling and my back goes out of joint. So I'm very happy with the mattresses.

I've slept on the sleeper beds in VWL (old style with thin mattress and bar that you can feel), OKW (old style that was very soft and for me, unusable), BLT (new style, very comfortable), and AKL (new style, very comfortable).

If the mattress is too hard, consider buying a cheap inflatible mattress to partially inflate and put on top of the sleeper mattress (my sleeper sofa at home is an inflatible bed on top of a thin mattress).

Good luck.

The one in our studio earlier this month was not one with attached cushions. It may have been memory foam - I guess I didn't look that close. We thought it was ok. Our daughter slept on it 5 nights and I did one. I didn't sleep too badly on it.

We just returned from our trip to BCV where our nephews 18 and 14 stayed on a sleeper sofa for 5 nights. They didn't seem to mind very much. I'm sure that they would have preferred beds, but they didn't complain about the sleeping arrangements.

My DD14 and my son DS22 have both slept on sleeper sofas at different times at VWL, BLT, BCV, and BWV.

Both were satisfied with the comfort and didn't seem to mind during our trips. I did lay down on the one at BLT and it didn't seem bad but I prefer a harder mattress than a really cushy one so that could play a role.

Good luck!

Put the 15 yo's in the bed and you take the sofa. 98 out of 100 guests surveyed didn't mind the sofa at all.

Kids always get the sleeper sofa. Parents (owners) always get the master bedroom. David, you really must help enforce these DVC rules. ;)

Adult DS has slept on the sofa at BWV and BCV - newer style and cushions stay attached and he found them very comfortable - much more so than the old style sofas.

You know...I'm not sure???? I don't think it was memory foam though-it was a rather thin mattress. The resort does offer a foam overlay mattress topper that you can request- the waffle kind. Funny thing though- we requested one during another stay and they put it on the regular queen bed vs. leaving it for us to use on the pull-out.---Kathy

Sorry D&B, I should have clarified that my statement would apply to a studio only. Kids never get the master bedroom.

What we have found best for us, and using that currently on our stay at the Wilderness Lodge Villas, is to bring an inflatable air mattress. We have on of the expensive kind ( not sure of the brand ) but it is pretty firm and my teenage kids have no problems sleeping on it.
