Hi, this is my first positing! I am so exicited. We are going on our 3rd cruise in 2 weeks! Is it true they no longer do the soda mugs. Did they replace this with something else or do you have to buy each individual soda? Thanks.:earsgirl:

Now you can purchase a soda "sticker" for your KTTW card. This will let you get free soda. If you would like, you may purchase the mug ($3) and a lanyard thing ($2) in addition to the soda sticker.

The soda program is $5/day, so if you are on the 7-day it is $35, 4 day - $20 and $15 for the 3-day.

Many feel the soda program is a waste of money. We figured that at the cost of $1.50 plus 15% tip, we would rather cap what we were spending on soda. Plus - I wasn't tempted to get any of the "fancy" drinks that cost a lot of money when I had soda - which probably saved me far more than what I spent on the soda stickers.

They still offer the soda program. However, they place a sticker on your KTTW card. The Plastic mugs you can purchase as a separate item but if you don't want to pay for a soda you will have to show the card they won't accept the mug by itself. Eric

It is like a string or cord type of thing that will attach to the mug then you can hang it around your neck or attach it to a bag.

On our 11/29/03 Eastern sailing we were able to show the KTTW card OR the mug. No need to have the sticker if you had the mug.

WORD OF WARNING! I've read the advice above in several different posts and want to be sure that everyone understands that the mug alone won't necessarily work to get a soda. While bartenders frequently do not ask to see the sticker if you have a mug, technically you do need to purchase and display the sticker to avoid being charged for the drink. I was asked at least three times to show my sticker (which was on my card) before I could get my mug filled. It really makes sense because otherwise you could just buy the $3 mug and get free soda for the entire cruise.

YOu can really purchase a mug- for $3??? without purchasing the sticker? That sounds awful cheap. I wasn't aware you could buy a mug (like purely as a souvenier or to use for other drinks that are free at the drink station- to have a bigger cup since I have heard the cups there are tiny) for $3. I thought it was only $3 IF you had already purchased the soda sticker?

You MUST purchase a sticker to get a 3.00 mug. And NEVER was I asked to see the sticker when asking for a soda refill. No KTTW card.......no charge.

How do they handle the special AAA mugs then? Is there a sticker to go along with those- It was a pain to carry those mugs around.

The mugs are $5 now.

My parents just returned from the 3-night cruise and weren't happy at all with the mug/sticker program. It costs $5 for the mug and $15 for the sticker.

They said that there were specific places that you had to go for the soda and that was a pain in the neck. They said they didn't feel they got their money's worth.

Good point about the mugs not being available unless you purchase a sticker, but I'm sure there are ways around that. I still stand by the fact that I was asked to produce my sticker even though I also had a mug. YMMV, but don't be too annoyed if you're denied a fill up with just a mug and no sticker.

I think the mugs are just $3, but if you purchase the mug AND the lanyard it's $5.

I agree that you have to drink a lot of soda to make the program worth it.

Yes, mug and lanyard was 5.00. 3 for just the mug.

This is not the case. I was also on the 11/29/03 eastern and they would not allow me to purchase the mug alone. If you want a mug you have to purchase the sticker, that is what they are for. And like Lampskies, I was never asked for the sticker if I gave the mug. You can only purchase one mug per sticker too. The mugs are $3 so your total would be $38 on the 7 day. Worth it to me because my husband I both used it and he drinks way too much pop, but in the long run it saved us money. If you want a mug you can always buy the one down in the gift shop.

I've always been curious, but does anyone know WHY one is charged for soda on DCL, (or any cruise line)? Why don't they include it in the price of the package, even if they have to raise the rates some? It seems that it would save a lot of hassle for everyone.

OK....let's get the 411 from the SODA DRINKER OF THE WORLD....

DD AGE 10

On the 12-13 Magic...she purchased the mug, lanyard and got a sticker on her KTTW card. Everything, altogether cost $40.75.
I don't know what the individual costs were...I was not with her when the purchase was made.

The mugs that are sold with this promo are SPECIAL MUGS...not the same ones you buy in the shops. They have to be able to distinguish between the special mugs and the ones that are sold in the shops...they are totally different.

She is sitting right here with me and she said:

If she had her KTTW card..which had a stick on it...but not the mug..they either asked to see her card or she showed it to them..because that is what we had told her to do.

If she had her mug...she said they did not ask to see her KTTW card. I tried to make sure she had her mug up on deck, at Bingo, etc..because the mugs hold more than the little drink cups they
have and/or bring to you from the bars.

As far as limited placed to get the soda...she got soda at all the deck bars, Rockin' Bar D, Promonade Lounge. At Preludes she said she showed them her card and they gave her a can of Coca-Cola. So I cannot imagine them limiting the places you could use the promo.

This is what happened 2 weeks ago.....

Just got off last saturday.

Showed the AAA Form, got a sticker AND a mug.

kept the mug unopened in cabin and just showed the sticker everywhere. worked great.

Now what do I do with four mugs?

jgalecpa -- I assume that they change the procedure frequently. Since you and I both cruised quite recently, it doesn't suprise me that we both had the same experience: Picked up AAA mugs and stickers. I showed the stickers, not the mug -- I did this because I didn't want to carry the mug around, nor did I want to wash the mug in the room.

mickeyhugger -- They don't include the soda in the price of the cruise for one big reason -- money. Consider:

Right now people are willing to pay $35/week or $2 per individual drink. Since fountain sodas cost pennies apiece, this is a huge profit. The system is working for them!
If they raise the cruise by the real cost of sodas (maybe $1 per person), they'll lose profit.
If they raise the cost of the cruise by $35/week (what people are paying for mugs), it'll turn some people away toward cheaper cruise lines. $35 x a whole family is a lot of money for many people.

MrsPete, so.........if one DD had a sticker, and let's say the other DD had the mug.......DCL would still be making $$$. That's what I thought the reason was for the sticker and the 3.00 mug. Sooooo many people complained about the cost.

DCL actually started with just the sticker, then changed to the mug. I would guess this recent change is due to complaints about carrying the mugs not about the price. Since you carry the card around anyway- I think accepting both is a good idea.
