I just got my closing documents from the time share store and there is a spot to include our social security numbers. Those papers will be going through alot of hands before being registered owners with disney and in this day and age with identity theft and all I worry. Has anyone ever bought without using a social security number. We are paying in cash so no financing credit check needed

I believe its required because its a real estate transacton and they have to have it for tax reporting purposes at the end of each year for the small portion of your dues that go to property taxes.

FYI...We, too, had to include our SS#'s for tax purposes for the title on the contracts. I din't question it though...just wanted this closing to speed up and prayed these papers don't end up in the wrong hands for identity theft :scared1: !

DVC requested our SSN and they use it for identification purposes.

For the past 11 years we have received documents to file with our Federal Tax Return which contains our Social Security number from DVC. This is for the portion of real estate taxes which we pay on our ownership.

I've never gotten anything like that with regard to dues. I have to manually extract the taxes portion from the statement.

I know for a fact (at least when I bought 2 years ago) that if you are not borrowing or getting a mortgage thru DVC they do not require your SS#. :confused3

Clarification here since on my previous posting. Yes, if you are financing through Disney, or through another timeshare seller that offers financing, you are required to provide your Social Security number. My 1098's produced by Disney in fact show the social security number right on it.

You can pull your real estate tax information from the Annual Dues statement. I do not know personally if DVC will sell to an individual without providing the SS#, but apparently they have done so for others in past years.

I purchased a resale from the Timeshare Store with the closing handled by Timeshare Closing Services. The closing paperwork had a spot for the SSN so I called Timeshare Closing Services and asked them about it. They told me they didn't need it -- they just pass it on to DVC. I told them I would leave it blank and give my SSN directly to DVC and they said that was fine. I called DVC Admin and they told me they use it for ID purposes (when you call to make a reservation the MS CM asks for the last 4 numbers of your SSN) but that I could set up another password if I would prefer. So I opted not to give out my SSN and in my 3 years of membership, no one has ever asked me for it or told me they needed it for anything.

ETA: I did not finance either my purchase through TTS or the add-ons I purchased through Disney. I think if you finance, you need to provide your SSN. You will get an annual statement showing the interest you paid on your loan so that you can claim it on your taxes if you are eligible to do so.

I just closed last Friday on a resale and I did not provide our SS#. I questioned it when I got my initial documents and was told the title company needed it, but I could provide it then. When my documents came from the Title Company the directions stated I needed to provide a SS# under my signature. I called and questioned and they said Disney needed it, but that I did not have to provide it then. I still have not received my documents from Disney, but I have also seen others post that they did not provide it to Disney. My experience is that: it is asked for, but you do not actually have to provide it. Call and ask. Even if they say you need to provide it, ask to speak to someone else. Now, we paid cash, so financing is a whole other story.

I have paid cash for 5 contracts. I do receive a 1098 at year end for my taxes, which I do use for a tax deduction. I guess if Disney really doesn't want it, and you don't need the tax deduction, then don't provide it. I need every tax deduction that I can get. Call Member Services and ask them.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. A Form 1098 is used to report mortgage interest. If you receive a 1098 from Disney it's because they financed your points. There are no forms for reporting property taxes paid.

I have just received all my tax doc's from my CPA, You are right, I did finance one, paid cash for 5. The one I financed is made up of 3 contracts. I do receive 3 1098's for it. I thought is was for the dues. It is for interest. They still needed the SSN. Sorry for the confusion. I just fill out my Tax organizer.

Don't worry, I had the same problem, LOL! Too many forms to send in with taxes and it gets worse every year, lol.

I've bought both resale and direct from Disney and neither time did I give them my social security number (even tho' there spaces for this info on the forms). The transactions were not financed, so you do not have to provide it.

Actually all they need is the last 4 numbers for identification. I just closed and that is all I provided. When I called DVC for a question they asked those last 4 to verify, so do not provide if you do not fell comfortable doing so.

They don't need any portion of your SSN for ID purposes. When we call, they ask me to verify address, telephone number and that is all. We never gave them any portion of our SSN.

When I called this week they asked me for my last 4 digits of my social.
