Soarin and person with dizziness issues

If your DH has dizziness/visual issues, tell him to close his eyes during the night time scene of car lights. I cannot handle that part of the ride, something about how the cars lights are moving in opposite directions at the same time really makes me feel dizzy/nauseous. Closing my eyes does the trick and I'm fine with the rest of Soarin' :)

That is the part where I have to close my eyes and as someone else said earlier, the Aladdin scene in Philharmagic when they are on the carpet moving between buildings.

I have vertigo issues. Closing my eyes on Soarin' can NOT take that motion dizziness away. It surrounds you - eyes opened or closed. It takes you with it in circles.

I find it interesting that only some people with vertigo can use Soarin' & others can't. Does anyone have any further knowledge of why I can't & the next person can? The only explanation I have is that we're all different.

Anyone? :confused3

Some people have issues based on motion and others have issues based on visual cues and some have both.

for me, I hate heights (yes, I'm terrified) and I get a sick feeling w/ the movement on Soarin. I tried focusing on one spot and telling myself, it's just a movie. All I kept thinking was, I'll NEVER go hang gliding!!! I felt awful after that ride.

I get motion sick from Soarin but only in the last few years. So odd.

Eta: i literally still do mission space orange no problem, but something about Soarin lately makes me dizzy.

I get motion sickness very easily, on Soarin, closing my eyes in certain spots worked for me. As the above poster recommended, Bonine is great!

It's funny, I have benign positional vertigo also and cannot do Star Tours. Maybe because I have motion sickness as well. I did try it once but felt terrible afterwards... I can do Soaring (only once per day) and just close my eyes at the parts where the motion on the screen is faster like when you go over the ocean. I also never try it right after eating - that time was tougher.... There are so few rides that I can do that it is worth it to me even if I have to close my eyes for part of it.

Vertigo is caused by different things for different people. For some it is a sinus issue, for others is it Meniere's disease, for me it is a chronic auto-immune disease, etc.....so it would make sense that we all respond to it differently.

Plane rides about kill me, but I can be thrown around on Big Thunder Mountain and it doesn't bother me at all.

THanks Everyone. It is not really a motion sickness but either Meniere's or a vestibular disorder, they are not sure. Sometimes while driving long distances he gets the vertigo but has spent the past year retraining his brain by doing various balance exercises. I will not have him do the space shuttle ride or test track for sure. Iw as just uncertain whether to movie would set him off. We are going with family so it will be the only chance he gets to try it out. We have young kids. Speaking of can my 6 year old ride? She is about 45" tall.

That is what I have too. I had to undergo all these crazy position tests and it came up as vestibular disorder most likely due to bppv. I can NOT do the mission space ride at all, not even the wimpy orange side. Nor can I do Star Tours or Rockin' Roller Coaster. But Soarin' is ok for me so long as I close my eyes during the car lights scene. And yes, your 6 year old can ride.:thumbsup2 Have a good time.

Unless you're talking about a flat out fear of heights (related to being up in the air in the harness as opposed to the simulated height), you'll either be fine on Soarin or can close your eyes and be fine on soarin.

This is not like star tours which is very bumpy or mission space which is spinning you at significant speeds. The actual movement on Soarin is very gentle and if you close your eyes you won't feel the negative effects (unlike on Mission Space where closing your eyes can make it worse!).

If it starts to bother me, I look away from the screen. I either look to the sides or down to the ground so that I can see that I am not really moving.

I have fought this my entire life, but WILL NOT give up my WDW, or USO rides!
A Draminine about 30 minutes before takeoff last me pretty much the whole day. Soarin' is absolutely our favorite ride, and we usually make several flights each vacation! Funny how the "thrill rides" like Hulk & Rock-n-Roll don't ever bother me, but that stinking Carpet Ride....whoaaaaaa there Aladin!

My DH has a problem where certain visual stimulation makes him dizzy. He basically goes on few rides. I wonder if he stared straight ahead with Soarin' if he would be ok as long as he did not look down or left or right. Anyone else have similar problems?

i have vertigo as a result of a head injury. i definitely would NOT recommend Soarin. mainly because you cannot just get out of your seat and leave if you want, you have to stay on there until the attraction is over.

to give you an idea, my vertigo will sometimes kick in on a regular movie screen that is not 3D and not huge (so smaller theater) just with a zoom in camera shot or if there is fast moving cars or a camera pan. so on the soarin screen? you are asking for trouble.

Yes and I wanted off as soon as it started moving and I never get car sick, or bothered by any other rides. I was miserable and have not been back on since.

I had to look at the side of the building to keep from getting sick. As soon as I did, it would stop, it was the motion on the screen that bothered me.

there are a couple different issues people are bringing up and OP should make a distinction for themselves about what their issue is. becoming motion sick or nauseous on a ride absolutely it will help to take a gravol (dramimine) but if the issue is vertigo i really would not do soarin. that's a very different issue related to things like optical nerve damage, or pressure related issues in the inner ear. a gravol will not help.

Some people have issues based on motion and others have issues based on visual cues and some have both.
And smell, I was bothered by certain smells far more than anything else. My worst offenders:
1 Smells
2 Visual
3 Head tilt - nothing upside-down

I was so worried the first cruise I took but I did not really have a problem. I took some motion sickness preventative and was fine. But I can only do one EE ride per trip, the backward part gets me. As for Soarin - I love it but am glad it isn't any longer.

I had Meniere's Syndrome, suffered for 30 years, can't even tell you how many Dr.'s or clinics (including Mayo) I went to. Finally found a savior, the head of ENT at Un of IL, Chicago who disconnected a small nerve behind my ear. No more dizziness, I love that man.

OP - in my opinion it is not worth trying, I love the ride but worth skipping if there is even a chance it will get things rolling in him. Hope everything works out!

If trying it sit in section first section or third on the outside. I can't even think about Star Tours or mission space without turning green. Had to leave park after going on these rides. I love Soarin' hate the evening Traffic scene, if I start to feel the dizziness I don't close my eyes I'll look around at anything except the screen. I learned this at UNiversal on Spider-Man, on Back to the Future I rode the whole thing with my eyes closed. Lol I even got nauseous on Ellen Energy Adventure. Just closed my eyes. I still love Soarin' maybe that's why I tolerate it better than others.

I suffer from vertigo and Soarin is my favorite ride. The only scene that bothers me is going up the snowy mountain. I've ridden enough now to know to close my eyes when that's coming.

Now Mission Space or Star Tours will turn me green in a heartbeat.

This! My sister has Meniere's and I am often surprised at the things that bother her and the things that do not.

You are right. Perhaps I should have worded the OP differently. It is my lack of understanding. He does have vertigo, not dizziness. I always think they are the same thing. I know that most of the movie the Hunger Games, he had to close his eyes because of the fast paced scenes and the camera darting around. Soarin' is smoother so I thought it may be ok. I will leave it up to him to try.
