So what is wrong with Stove-Top?

But Stove Top and instant potatoes probably aren't the lowest of the low for Turkey Day. That would have to be those canned candied sweet potatoes topped with marshmallows.

Omg Im not the only one. Its the mostest nasty thing ever.

I don't like crunchy things like onions and celery in my stuffing so I don't use Stove Top because the texture bothers me. My stuffing is cooking outside the turkey and this year I made it with a loaf of dried bread, some chicken stock, a couple eggs and poultry seasoning. I like my stuffing simple.

I have never in my life heard of egg in stuffing/dressing

The egg thing is why food safety experts are so down on cooking stuffing inside the bird. If the temp lingers low for a long time, there is risk of salmonella bloom from the eggs.

Southern-style cornbread stuffing normally requires eggs, because it's essentially almost a savoury cake. However, I've never seen anyone actually do that kind inside a bird; it's usually made with a batter, so you'd have to pour it in, which IMO wouldn't really be possible.

I've personally never felt any need for a binder with stuffing made from bread crumbs and croutons; it binds quite nicely without it.

I think it's more about the fact that the stuffing goes in to a raw turkey and raw turkey juice drips in to it. Once that happens the stuffing has to get to the same temp as the turkey. Also, if you don't remove it right away it will sit at the wrong temp inside the turkey for awhile and it is now a meat product.

Any reason IMHO is good enough to err on the side of safety. Salmonella isn't "nice" and can be deadly!

Eta: people need to eat what they like. I like cooking so I cook stuff from scratch. My husbands mom hated cooking but was a wonderful mom. They are stove top, vamped up dehydrated potatoes, Sara Lee pies and jello cranberry sauce. I will happily fix him that meal a couple of times a year too.

Looking down on others for such stupid things is probably a worse character trait than not elevating your palate...
:thumbsup2

My husband's mother would put in a frozen lasagna then they'd go hiking and come back to eat that for Thanksgiving. She doesn't like to cook either but loves it when I cook for her. {The only times she's nice to me now that I think about it } :upsidedow

Pages and pages about stuffing/dressing !:rotfl:

One thing I haven't read about here - although I don't eat it - my DH's family makes oyster dressing. In a casserole dish, not in the bird.

Those are banned in my house.

That sounds more like something I would like. I do prefer most things plain and I detest onions.

Oh, my. Im sure people love it but that sounds icky to me. I dislike oysters...

I made both stuffing for in the bird and Stove Top for me. People like my stuffing in the bird but I like Stove Top better. I usually avoid MSG and some other things but all bets are off on holidays.

I wonder how Stove Top would taste cooked in the bird....

It is NASTY inside of the bird. I've tried it before and it just doesn't work for me. Too soggy.

I have been thinking about instant mashed potatoes this whole thread. I have never actually had them. What do they taste like? Do they taste close to the real thing?

Mashed potatoes are super quick and easy to make the real way it would never have crossed my mind to make instant. Do you just add water? Curious minds want to know:rotfl:

I dunno. My mom made them when I was a kid and I swore I'd never, ever make them as an adult. They are nasty. You boil water and then add the box and let it re-hydrate the potato flakes. Yes, it is as bad as it sounds.

I think some people (not all) here are confusing mine and others' love for Stove-Top with being not a good cook/lazy cook, etc. I just really like Stove-Top and that is it! :rotfl:

I suppose Stove Top is "acceptable" 363 days a day, but, to me, serving it for Thanksgiving or Christmas indicates sloth. I don't care if that's what your family prefers; for a special occasion, I believe one should at least make an attempt to elevate one's palate.

I've never had any type of convenience potato (instant, refrigerated, etc.) that tastes as good as the real thing.

Well, La-Ti-Freeking-Da to you, too.

Only my kids eat stuffing/dressing, Dh nor I eat it. But my kids want Stove Top. That is the only thing they have ever had. None of them like Mushrooms, Onions or Celery so chunks of Vegetables in stuffing would gross them out.

My mom use to make homemade stuffing but I never ate it because I also don't like Onions or Celery.

I have gotten to where I don't even cook my own Turkey or Ham. I buy them from the Heavenly Ham store. I make mashed Potatoes and Mac N Cheese out of a box and I use gravy from a jar now that I don't cook the bird myself. Or I buy Turkey gravy from the Ham store.

I buy store made desserts. Not a lot of made from scratch here. I am just not into cooking enough to want to bother with spending that much time into food prep.
