So, what do you think is on the chopping block for proposed Nintendo area?

you had me going ::yes:: until you wanted to can my beloved MIB............:D

LOL! Sorry! I like the ride too, but find the MIB theme is dated now since the movie is no longer relevant. Perhaps that would be a good one to just re-theme, I could totally see that turning into some kind of video game/Nintendo theme type ride!

The 3rd MIB movie just came out 3 years ago and there's rumors of a 4th one coming out.

Having said that, I wouldn't be too upset if they turned it into a Metroid themed ride or something like that.

MARVEL isn't going anywhere

I'm starting to substantially wonder what they actually have a license TO because there are clearly limits at play. It certainly looks like they can't build anything around any Marvel film properties. And I'm wondering if they are time-limited at where in the comic continuity they can even speak to. If that's the case, do you honestly believe they're going to build more 1990s or earlier Marvel content? The draw for that would be less than zero. Yes, they have been able to bring in some fresh merchandise, but it seems clear there are limits around the decor/attraction content that don't extend to current Marvel offerings. Otherwise they'd have likely already tried cashing in much further.

A license with limits isn't nearly as valuable.

I was thinking MIB should be staying for a while.... but METROID! Never even thought of that. I would ride the hell out of that.

Actually, I'm being told we may see more things happening with the MCU "Marvel Cinematic Universe", and not just the comics themselves....meaning a possible Avengers attraction. I don't know the full legal issues for something like this, but that is what some very good sources are hinting at.

who is the one telling you this?
i know you have been around for many years on the boards and you usually post when you have knowledge on something about universal.

several people have been hinting at it, on the magical wdw boards and orlando united...people who are usually very accurate....and I personally know some people who aren't on the boards who have insight :)

there's the "r" word again! lol I don't see MIB going anywhere

supposedly, if U removes the existing rides, they lose the rights to all the characters associated w/it i.e. eliminating Dr Doom = losing Fantastic Four & so on...

fyi here's the contract U has re marvel.

I'm an IP lawyer. I'd be shocked if they actually had rights that extended that far.

They can negotiate additional rights though and that might what the discussions are about.

I'm surprised that more aren't thinking that Toon Lagoon might go away. It is pretty irrelevant to most people now. I could see a retheming of the area to fit Nintendo.

I don't think that Marvel is going anywhere. The comics are doing quite well in conjunction with the movies so that part doesn't seem to matter. MIB had better stay too!

I think Toon Lagoon may go away but not for this. This has been earmarked for kidzone for a while.

Really? Was it straight to DVD? I can't remember any hype about that whatsoever. Certainly not enough to have an entire ride dedicated to it when blockbuster Marvel movies and Jurassic World are coming out.

Agreed! I LOVE the MIB ride. It was one of our favorites! We are super competitive, though, so working that score up was a huge motivating factor. The ride works so well with the theming. I would be devastated....

It was not straight to DVD, and it was pretty good. Generally received well by critics, and it made a lot of money--about $625 million worldwide, which is more than either Jurassic Park sequel (twice as much as JP3, actually). I'm not a big fan of the series, but it apparently has its fans. Also, as someone else mentioned, there is a sequel in the works from the guys who made the Lego Movie and the new Jump Street movies. In fact, the new MIB movie is a mashup with Jump Street, which sounds incredibly bizarre.

I loved the back story in MIB3......... There's a really sad bit in it that kinda explains a bit of the relationship between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones........worth watching :thumbsup2

All credible reports have been on negotiating the release of Spielberg from his contract in exchange for Universal abandoning all Marvel theme park rights. (Steven apparently isn't cooperating.) I cannot think of anything Universal could offer Disney that Disney would accept for expanded Marvel theme park rights...especially when Innoventions is screaming to be rebranded as the "Stark Tech Demo Lab."

While I agree Toon Lagoon can (and should) go, I wonder if they'd really want to scrap 2 water rides for something else. I can't see re-themeing two water rides both as Nintendo properties (one, maybe, based on Mario water levels or Zora's domain from Zelda).

The wishful thinking of a Disney shareholder.

Never going to happen. All credible reports point to an expansion of Marvel at Universal, not to them abandoning it.

There has not been one credible report of an expansion of the Marvel properties at Universal that hasn't come from a Universal fanboy. The license dates back to 1992. If they really had more rights, they would have done something else well before now.

There, however, has been extensive discussion of whether Dreamworks is going to stay at Disney or move to Universal. Spielberg has a long and complicated history with both companies, and his involvement with Universal parks dates back to 1987.

Marvel park rights are the only thing Universal has that Disney wants, and Universal wants DreamWorks under its roof.

And with two of the attractions being mysteriously "updated" later this year (Hulk and Dr. Doom), that could be the first domino to fall. The Marvel stuff at IoA is horribly dated and by no means 1/10th the draw that the Potter stuff is. Moreover, while the Hulk coaster is a good coaster, it's easy to re-theme. The Storm Force and Doom Freefall are just re-branded generic rides, also easy to re-theme. And Spider-Man is just the same simulator forumla they use in most of their simulator rides. They re-themed Back to the Future into the Simpsons (which was also a huge improvement); they can just as easily re-theme Spider-Man into something else.
