So what do you do?

Another problem is that it is not just one group of people who are saying that their PMs have been read. There are other groups too. I've read a post elsewhere (not here and not "there") from someone who posted screen caps of a PM they received from one of TPTB responding to something they had sent in a PM to someone else. Maybe it was photoshopped but as Fitswimmer said when there is no other side being shared just yet, it appears pretty damning. There are several stories of PMing info, usually PMing info about how to locate a site that is filtered or something like that, and then being banned for a filter violation when it was something that they did not post openly, it was "google XYZ and they are the first one" or something similar sent in a PM.

I would like to think that even if the ability to delve into the database tables and retrieve PMs exists, that no one would go digging in to PMs but I also realize that one should never consider ANYTHING posted on the web to be truly private.

People may be saying it, but that doesn't make it true. :)

The PMs do sit on Pete's server, in a database. Pete would have access to that, but I doubt he'd know how and I'm pretty certain he'd have no interest or the time to sift through PMs. Alex would have access, but again, I can't see him having the time or interest. And all the geeks at the server farm who support our hardware would have access, but don't know or care what the DISboards is.

So it is true that nothing is technically private if you put it on someone else's server.

But I am not aware of any instances to date when we have had reason to go to the work or trouble to access someone's PMs. And a regular Webmaster like me certainly doesn't have the ability to access those databases.

And if that information had been used to validate actions against any poster here, it would be a surprise to me.

I have been going back and forth for days now about what to do. I am not really that well known and maybe even not very well liked by some. Some people and I really butt heads when it comes to certain issues. But I MISS everyone that is gone! I miss the debates and learning new things from everyone. It is just sad around here now without everyone here to contribute. What fun is a debate when everyone has to agree for fear of being banned!?

While this post my get me banned even though I am not even a member of the "other" board, I feel the need to defend the ones that did nothing to deserve the banning they got. And I cannot even believe there is ANYONE here that actually supports this mass banning! WTH? That is just insane to defend something that does not even make any sense.

If people here wanted to clarify things then maybe we might all understand a little more about what happened. But since nobody is saying anything, we can only assume that what we are hearing from others, is correct.

I just wanted to say my peace with it all.

You know, its really amazing...

This thread was started, and was let to continue, because we were missing friends who have been banned and wanted a place to share our frustation and sadness. Several of us have been reminding people of that when they are coming in, guns blazing, to defend the ptb for what they are doing.

We are asking YOU people to go somewhere else, you are the one(s) infiltrating a nice, peaceable thread, where people have actually been allowed top ask questions and get the few answers that are out there. We don't want or need to hear about how the ptb are allowed, by the bylaws, blahblahblah... don't care, not what we came here for. So if you want to argue for the ptb, please, once again, you are being asked to go somewhere else and poof their thread.

We are quite happy sitting here discussing things without someone telling us how wrong we all are. Why is it so hard for you to leave us be?

True free speech does not seek to cause emotional injury.

With respect, true free speech has nothing to do with how anyone feels about what is being said.

TOS even before the modifications stated what could and could not be posted both here and on other sites.

No, the terms of service regard this board/website, not others. That is precisely why many people are upset over the bannings.

I'm not a prolific poster, but I read both places and will very much miss hearing the opinions and thoughts of many of the nearly 100 people who have been kicked to the curb.

Personally, I'd have a heck of a lot more respect for the PTB if they came out before the stuff hit the fan and said "hey I know you post at the other site and I want to give you fair warning that we're tired of the complaints and people who post at the other board are liable to be banned for XYZ reasons".

Or at the very least a head's up to the admin at the other board to make it private, or to let the members know. Instead this situation was handled in probably the worst way it possibly could. If it was an oops situation, again I believe people would have had a lot more respect and tolerance for PTB to post an oops thread than what actually ensued.

JMHO YMMV

That's all anyone wants, Kristine. We all want to know why our friends are gone and they want to know why they are gone. We all loved this place and the people we met here. No matter what else we disagreed on, we could all meet at WDW and share a good time. (and a few drinks...)

:thumbsup2 Agreed.
I still can't figure out how someone gets banned while on vacation.:confused3 I asked earlier, but I don't know what happened there.

Then with all due respect, why not just provide that as an answer the other day when someone posted the link to vBulletin software saying how it could be done rather than poofing it? Just asking honestly.

I could have written your post. I imagine many people are feeling the same way right now.

Why did you think that was funny? I thought it was kinda sad the question had to be asked.

I felt like we were holding our breaths and could wait no longer to hear the outcome- it was like a sigh of relief to know someone is OK........... that's all!:confused3

This is a record for me because I rarely read more than 1 or 2 pages of a long thread but this thread captured my attention because of the input of some long time Diser's...after reading everything here I have one question for those that got banned in defense of their friends, throwing themselves on the sword so to speak, isn't it better to stay and fight the fight instead of taking yourself out of the game...I agree some very good posters are gone and I will miss their posts...there are also some gone that I wouldn't trade a glass of spit for...however, how do you fight the battle from the outside:confused3 ...if you want to effect change then you need your voice to be heard and you need to be able to discuss things in a civil manner...that's why this thread is still active...it's a civil discussion of peoples feelings...no one is falling on the sword looking for glory...I have been a member here since 2001 and have been banned 3 times...the first time it stung because it was carried out by a Mod from my home state that I thought a had a good relationship with and it was over have a banned posters intials in my tag...that's right, her intials, not her name...now at the time I was furious and posted a long winded pile of crap about how the Dis practiced censorship, blah, blah, blah...2 subsequent screen names were banned shortly after...I have been The Mayor now since 2006 and while I don't like everything that goes on here instead of rampaging I send a PM to WM Kathy or WM Alex...sometimes I get a response and sometimes I don't...but at least I've stated my objections to something I didn't like...the bottom line is this is Pete's toy and it has always been his toy...the WM's follow his direction...he can do what he wants, that's just the facts...many people that don't like that have moved on over the years...do I like that type of arrangement, no of course not...but I have also come to the realization over the years that this is an internet board, a Disney internet board at that, and to get so worked up over it that it affects my real life is absurd...so my advice to those who have close friends banned is to stay and have your voice heard instead of falling on the sword...you never know a miracle could happen.

Beats me. I didn't see that thread. But I know we've explained this a number of times over at least the past couple years.

I missed the whole thing but this seems like a royal screw-up. I don't see how people can be banned for visiting an entirely different site? :confused3 I don't see how people can be banned whilst not even posting on the DIS? :confused3 I certainly don't see how this can happen after this board directed their entire user group to the other board? :confused3

And I'm totally confused by the legal aspect (unless the other board want to sue the DIS for redirecting everyone there or something?).

So the options are:
a) Be a member of the DIS and nothing else
b) Be a member of the other board (and any other boards) and NOT the Dis
So people can't possibly be both, right?

I miss all of those posters who were here. They were awesome. I don't see why some users of the other board have been banned and others not :confused3 .

Well, if this gets me banned I guess I'll go join the other board but all I can say for now is

You said it better than I could. :thumbsup2

I agree. I don't post a lot, but I do enjoy reading the Dis. I don't support what happened, and I'm saddened that so many are gone. I enjoy reading other opinions - it's what adds the spice to life.
