At our trip to the Disney Studios last week, I was surprised to see in several places merchandise from the old ABC show Home Improvement being sold. I thought...gee..they still haven't been able to get rid of this junk! (I know the show is in syndication, but it has been a long time...)

Anyway..perhaps Jill Hill has the answer at Jimhillmedia.com

quoting...

So what's so special about this TV special?," you ask. Well, it's "A User's Guide to Home Improvement," a retrospective for the hit ABC sitcom of the 1990s. This very special special will be taped at Westwood's historic Wadsworth theater. Best of all, "A User's Guide to Home Improvement" will be hosted by the "Tim the Tool Man" himself, Tim Allen.

end quote...

So maybe it's new merchandise after all..

I am not so sure about that. They had an auction several months ago and one of the things auctioned was the Binford tractor. I think what you saw was still some of the old stuff.

The merchandise sold in the parks (specifically Studios) is new, as far as I know. It is still made and sold because Home Improvement is still quite prevelant in syndication and is still a fairly strong brand. Props from the show being sold on Disneyauctions.com are quite a different thing entirely. I'm pretty sure that we will continue to sell new Home Improvement/Binford Tools hats, shirts, mugs, etc long after Who Wants to be a Millionaire merchandise loses popularity.

Actually the merchandise isn't all that new. Several years ago they used to have a father's day parade at the Studios. The music for the parade was the Home Improvement theme song and the theme was from the show. There were monster trucks, classic cars, heavy machinery along with a 1/4" Drill Team (female dancers) and The Binford Blower Brigade (male dancers). The guy who played Al in the show rode in the parade each year. There was merchandise in the shop at the end of the Backstage Studio Tour.

:) Don't forget, disney still makes items from nightmare before christmas, like pez machines, some things just continue to interest the public:p

Another example -- Figment
The ride was gone for a long time, but the merchandise still sold.
