"So & so's Mom is soooooo cool" - short vent

When I was 13 in the early seventies, I was so mad at my mom cause she wore jeans! I screamed at her why can't you be like Marcy's mother! (who wore polyester pantsuits!!) She has never let me forget that! My mom was "cool" in the mom way, too. We always hung out at my house and all the boys would ask for her advice.

I am "cool" now as long as I keep my mouth shut

I think kids define cool in a number of ways. I taught for 15 years before staying home with my children. I was far from the cool teacher in the junior high. Others had that title. But I was the one they came to with their problems, some quite serious. I don't care if my children's friends think I'm cool. I do care that they see me as someone who values them and who will hear them. Bottom line, kids think that is cool, too.

I think the reason my wife and I are seen as cool is because we both ride motorcycles. We have CBR 600's and take the kids from the neighbourhood out for rides on them. That and we have a big tree fort in the back yard that the kids all come and play in so that constitutes cool to them.
