(OR, the people next to me on the ride don't know how lucky they were!).

Hi all! Just thought I'd do a quick write-up of my journey into space and nausea during our honeymoon. The ride was in previews that day, and I eagerly went right in. I do tend to get motion sick in the backseats of large cars, or if I read in a car/plane/train. Still, you all know how many motion sickness signs there are at Disney.

Emboldened by my stupidity, er confidence, in riding Tower and Terror and Rock 'n' Roller coaster two days before (my first upside down ride), I thought I'd be FINE on Mission Space.

As a result, I ignored poor Gary's pleas to exit if I had motion sickness. My thinking went from "This is cool!" (as we were "looking up" at the launch pad) to "oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!" the instant we started to move. Seriously, the "Blast off" made me sick instantly--I've never felt motion sickness come on SO suddenly and forcefully. I knew I was in trouble since it was merely the beginning of the ride, and all I could think was "How can I make it without throwing up on these people in the pod with me." Actually, I guess in a centrifuge I'd just throw up on myself, not that that's an appealing option either.

As we landed on Mars and everyone else in the ride was enjoying their victory, all I could think is "We're not going back to earth are we? Please, let's stay on Mars."

Suffice it to say, I will never, ever go back (and I love thrill rides and space--so sad!!!). I was not only sick for the duration of the ride, but seriously ill for 2 hours afterward. I went and put my head on a table while DH rode Body Wars, then spent the remainder of the day better, but not great. Even riding the oh-so-tame Maelstrom later in the day made me queasy b/c of the prior experience.

I'm just amazed at how many people write in and say they didn't feel any ill effects. I want your iron constitution! At least I now know that it's good my childhood astronaut dreams remained dreams!!!

:bounce: <----me on Mission Space--green!!

I am really sorry that happened to you. I am wanting to know if anyone who normally does get sick on rides. Has taken motion sickness medication and or wore relief bands and then gone on the space ride and not gotten sick.

I want to know if that would likely work or not. Has anyone tried it? thanks

OMG - Pooh you are describing my experience - and I haven't even tried MS yet!!
I sound exactly like you - love rides and space but cannot tollerate them well.
Thank you very much for your candid report.
After reading on the boards all about MS, I was going to try it but now I really don't think I should (and fellow riders will thank me for it :p :p )
I'll just hold the backpacks and "stuff" like I usually do. I don't mind - I'll pass the time by looking for lime green ribbons - LOL:p

I was very afraid of MS because of the warnings I had read here. We also got delayed because of tech problems (20 minute wait turned into a 45 MINUTE WAIT. and I almost chickened out). Needless to say I went on and I loved it. My husband who talked me out of chickening out got so sick. He hardly talked for 2 hours but the worst park was when he started to feel better he went to get something to eat while we waited for Illuminations he lost a crown while eating a sandwich (Our first day in the parks what a way to start the trip. He had it fixed the first day we got home so all is well there) He has sworn never to go on MS again.

I rode Mission Space three times last week, all in a short time in the morning. I am some one who loves the thrill rides, but can no longer do things that spin like tea cups and Tilt-a-Whirls. I am okay on Primeval Whirl, and Men in Black when the spinning is limited. I can get whoozy or a little off if I do too many coasters in a row.

My first time on MS, I had no trouble, loved the feeling of the gee forces and was okay after the ride. The second one, I needed to cough, and may have looked more to the side to see some of the panels in front of me. I was trying to keep looking straight ahead. That time I did feel "off," not nauseous or dizzy but not right. We went to TT and rode in the single riders line. I felt fine, and we returned to use our MS fastpass.

So I think it's hard to predict how this attraction will affect you. The imagineering is wonderful, and maybe for some it will have to be a one time experience. I'm glad I will go back.

I'm glad this could be of use to some of you!

I should've added that I WAS wearing Sea-bands motion sickness wrists and it didn't help. I also was looking straight ahead in the beginning but was forced to close my eyes as soon as I started getting sick. DH thought it was funny that I was still opening my eyes for a split second and pressing my buttons when the "pilot" was ordered to do so. He said, "You didn't really need to do that, you know!" I knew, but I did not let my nauseated state affect my ability to be a great pilot!!!
:p

I was just going to ask for a thread will I puke on M:S? I never got sick on rides but last summer our local tilt-a-hurl got me big time. I was toast for the rest of the day. Now I am a little gunshy about M:S/ I wish I never new it was a centrifuge. Can you really tell your spinning? My DD is hot to go so I have no choice.

Do you go back to earth, lol! If its 4 minutes I think I can make it.

I could not tell I was spinning, but my stomach could! It felt more like all of a sudden someone pushed me back in my seat and pushed my stomach up into my throat. It was *sudden* and not pleasant! DH never felt a thing--what's up with that?

I would liken Mission Space to a very (very) high-tech version of the fair ground ride where you stand up facing each other in a circle and start spinning. There's no visual cue to tell you that you're spinning, though.

You don't go back to Earth, by the way--you stay on Mars. Thank God!

I've been looking forward to M:S, but I'm just a wee bit worried. Sometimes, not often, I get a little queasy on rides.

Think I'll nick the barf bag from my seat on the plane ride down!

LOL!!!!

I want to ride Mission Space soooo bad; but I am terrified that I will get sick! I love rollercoasters and do fine on them; but I don't do so great on simulated rides. Also I used to love fair rides like the tilt-a-whirl and the gravitron, but they make me VERY queasy now. I also get carsick in the backseat and can not read anything until after we've been in the car a good long time (like an hour or so). I just don't know what to do about this on our upcoming trip.

I'm concerned about riding this one, too. I've heard other stories about people feeling ill after the ride and that it seems to stay with you for a long time. On the other hand, there are reports of absolutely no ill effects at all. I guess I need to try this once, just to see. But I have a feeling that once a trip will be my limit.

I really enjoyed Mission Space but I'm not a quesy person. I did feel a little out of sorts when exiting--all I can tell you is if you start to feel quesy look away from the view set and down at the control board(it remains stationary) Good luck! I think its worth it

DH and I both get motion sickness from spinning rides and motion simulators. We both took Bonine the night before we rode MS and we both enjoyed the ride.

I knew MS was definately not a ride for me, so I sat outside the exit while my son rode many times over the course of our trip. He actually came out after his first ride and told me "the ride doesn't spin!". He has an iron stomach and never suffers from motion sickness or seasickness. It was quite interesting watching people exit the ride. The minority were all excited, "that was great"; many were walking very slowly, quite subdued, holding stomachs, heads, some leaning against the wall for awhile. One woman was totally covered in vomit-ugh! I think it's really a tough call to know how the ride will make you feel. There are many opportunities to chicken out though!

The only thing that made me feel sick on this one was panicking before hand based upon reading experiences like this! Try to relax before you ride, and DO NOT close your eyes. That works well on motion simulators, but not centrifuges. It completely screws up your inner ear/vision balance even worse than otherwise, so you would definitely have been better off leaving them open.

When DH and myself rode it DH was worried about getting sick. He can't even ride Dumbo without getting woozy. But we both followed the instructions about looking straight ahead and not closing our eyes and we both did fine. We did see people who weren't as lucky. I actually saw someone who was "Green" and another person who had to have a wheelchair after getting off of the ride.

I was so afraid to ride it but when we got the chance this last trip, I took it. A few years back I found I could not ride any ride that went in circles anymore...tilt-a-whirls, tea cups, etc.

I was brave and tried Mission Space... I love it!
As long as I looked forward and kept my eyes open I was okay. They say if you close your eyes you are in trouble.

What did make me ill....just watching that huge space station room in the que line. The one that turns in circles, to similate living in space. I missed it our first trip through, we went late at night and walked on. The 2nd trip, we waited in line. It didn't take long before I turned my back to that thing. LOL!

To Poohgetsmarried...thank you!!! Your post has sealed the deal for me. I pretty much knew, after reading so many posts, that I was not going on this ride. But now, after reading your description, this is exactly the thing that I know I have to steer clear of!! So I go and enjoy the fountains or something and wait for my boys to ride it. I am deathly afraid it will ruin someone's day though, feeling ill for hours afterward. Anyway, thanks again, a great description for us motion sick people!

I just wanted to add that, though it's undoubtedly great advice NOT to close your eyes, I was seriously ill right at the beginning, when my eyes were not shut. I was totally having a grand old time for the first 5 seconds and then--wham!

There seem to be people who are fine with their eyes open, but I think I'm one of the few who would've gotten sick no matter what. Again, I have a tendency toward motion sickness anyway.

Glad some people have found my description informative!
