So sad! Military tickets unusable

I respectfully disagree with this. While I am all for the idea of allowing discounts (even substantial discounts) for basic daily services such as food, shelter, and even education, I do not think that we should be passing out free high dollar vacations.

While I put on my flame suit, let me also say that I AM incredibly grateful for the service that each member of our armed forces provides.

By no means an attack but your statement is confusing to me. You say, "I don't think we"...who is "we", this discount is not from our government. It is from Disney, a publically held company valuing our troops and their service, it does not cost the average person a thing for Disney to give this discount (unlike if it were with tax dollars).

Second, you say "I do not think we should be passing out free high dollar vacations" since when does a small ticket discount on a vacation where the person still pays for a place to stay and food count as a "free high dollar vacation".

I agree you are certainly entitled to your opinion but it sounds like you think the US government is giving out thousands of dollars in vacations, which is simply not the case.

If I misunderstood your comments, my apologies in advance.

No problem. I was referencing this quote....

They are entitled - to all we can give them for the freedoms and liberties we live every day. The tickets should be free to our military!!!

I realize that the OP was referring to discounted tickets from Disney. It is their prerogative to offer those.

Clear as mud now? :thumbsup2

Thanks for the clarification. Oddly, I know from military family members Disney is one of the few theme parks that doesn't do free tickets at some point in the year. I know my cousin visit SeaWorld and Universal last year as they were free (for them but not family)

Wow. You do realize that most military familes dont make that much money, right? I think its great that Disney offers them discounts. A small gift for a great sacrifice. I dont consider her upset about not being able to use it the days she wants as "entitlement."
I have seen a lot of snarky people on here... Makes me glad I am mostly a lurker.
As a veteran who has friends/family currently serving, I wanted to post to voice my support. :)

I also realize Military does not pay for housing or medical and many other things I pay for as a civilian. By the statement "Military does not make alot" is being pretty general. I know for a fact I have a MP living in my neighborhood who makes me look like i'm living in squalor. These are the same people who had a party with their military friends who offered my 12 year old daughter alcohol as she was walking home from a friends house. And yes, i called the police. So, quit putting every enlisted person on a pedestal.

So do Doctors deserve a discount? How about Fireman? No, because they make "too much" money. But they still provide a service that all of us can say we have benefited from, and in some cases have saved our lives.

Yes, the person serving should be free. Not the entire family.

I hate to see threads on these boards turn ugly, so I didn't want to chime in, but I did actually want to agree with you about the stuff above. My husband is in the military. He has been in for 9 years now and will probably stay in for the next 11 (by choice) because of the lifestyle it affords us. You're right, we get extra money to pay for housing that doesn't come out of his paycheck, and we get great health insurance. Yes, his job causes us to be separated for months and months out of the year, but I wonder if most people that aren't in the military know that while deployed, a military member makes a lot more money than when they are in the states due to things like hazard pay and extra allowances. Plus the money earned while overseas is tax free! For most years, only 25% of my husband's entire income has been taxable...that's a big chunk of change that goes into his pocket. So yes, while deployments are dangerous, these men and women and their families are compensated for that danger.

I always appreciate when somewhere offers a military discount, but I would never say that we deserve one, because we have a successful and secure life because of his military career. In fact, if you were to see my husband in his uniform and go up to thank him, he'd shrug it off and blush from embarrassment because he doesn't see what he does as a huge sacrifice - he sees it as a job, just like any other. Just like you mentioned, there are doctors, policeman, and firefighters out there that save lives every day and often can't see their families very often either because of demanding schedules. I think they should be just as "entitled" to discounts, if not more so!

Just my two cents :)

You know how a few posts up you said that if someone complained, they were a whiner? Who's whining now?

We have utilized the military resort discount at Disney but not the tickets as we have passes. I am very grateful for Disney providing them. They have been doing it for quite some time now and I know junior enlisted people have used the tickets and discounts to go to Disney when without them they could not go. It is a wonderful thing Disney does.

I believe you just said what I am always afraid to say out loud! :worship:

Thanks for showing the other side. And thanks to your husband for what he does. Me and my husband BOTH thank every military person we see in uniform for providing us the freedom we have today. And you are right, most get embarassed, like they do nothing special. Without them we would not be able to live the lives we live.

And i do know for a fact that military was getting over seas pay for being stationed in Alaska. I don't know if that still is true or not.

And i do know for a fact that military was getting over seas pay for being stationed in Alaska. I don't know if that still is true or not.

It's called COLA (cost of living allowance) for locations that are OCONUS (outside the continental United States). Members stationed in Hawaii get it too, as well as those in foreign countries. It's not the same as deployment pay (not tax free or anything), it's basically just some extra income that they earn because the military realizes that the cost of living is higher in places like Hawaii, Alaska, and overseas. When a gallon of milk is close to $8, that extra money is pretty important!

OHA is not authorized for Alaska and Hawaii. They do get a substantial COLA but that is needed to offset the 8 dollar gallons of milk and 5 dollar lettuce in Alaska, especially Kodiak. I'm sorry, but when the bears outnumber the humans, you can't pay me enough to live there.

COLA is not just for overseas. We received COLA when we were stationed in South FL. It wasn't much compared to Oconus locations.

Maybe they shouldn't offer it if people are going to be ungrateful for the fact that they offer it at all. Sorry you have to pay what the rest of us would.:confused3

Oh wow! That was just nasty. I would like to point out the OP did not end up paying what the rest of us would she/he paid much more because they purchased the military tickets without realizing the blackout dates then had to purchase additional tickets at regular price. I and anyone with any sence would be frustrated about that! The military personnel don't exactly live in super comfort as far as wages.

I never said I was putting every enlisted on a pedestal. I just said many service men and women do not make a lot and its nice they get a discount. Yes, what is "a lot" is subject to opinion.
I am not going to argue about whether or not they deserve a discount. Its a matter of opinion. You stated yours and I have stated mine. I will leave it at that.

Disneyland does a lot of different kinds of discounts for people. I know that members of the firefighters union in California can get discounted tickets. After 9/11 there were free and discounted tickets for responders.

When I was a kid, growing up eight miles from Disneyland, my family could afford to go once a year - the day every fall when Disney offered $5 tickets for federal workers and their families.

Disney is a business, and offering discounts to the military is good PR. Yes, some in the military make a good living. But they make that living because of the family sacrifices they have to make. If Disney sees fit to single them out, I think that makes perfect sense.

This is a bit off topic, and personal, but the comments on thanking a military person hit me.

I also have several military friends who would "poo poo" any attempt to thank them for their service. They enjoy their jobs and don't think they deserve any special attention - even my friend who is about to leave for his third tour in Afghanistan.

That said...about four years ago my grandfather was visiting me here in Virginia (I had a new great grandson for him to meet. :) ) We drove into Washington DC to see the World War Two Memorial. My grandfather served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945.

While we were there I told him that I just wanted to thank him for all he had done, and sacrificed, to preserve the world for me and my children. (I felt kind of cheesy saying it, but the time and place just fit.) He looked at me and he said, "I don't think anyone has ever said that to me before."

My grandpa died seven months later and I CANNOT TELL YOU how glad I am I said that to him. So...maybe the men and women in their twenties and thirties are embarassed to hear it now. But if you see a guy in his eighties or nineties...say it. :)

And if you see him at Disneyland, maybe let him hit you with his scooter and don't get annoyed. :)

Whoa! let's back up here. I was born and raised in Alaska. #1 bears do not outnumber people. I have only seen a bear in the wild once since living here. My family spends all summer out in the wilderness, and you don't see bear very often. #2 i have never paid $8 for milk. You can get a gallon of milk for $2.99. And lettuce in the summer is 99 cents a head. And the places that do pay $10 for a six pack of coke or $8 for a loaf of bread would not be places the military would normally be stationed.

We have a very modern city and everything everybody else has. We don't live in igloo's and mush dog sleds to work. My husband does hunt and fish, and we do eat the meat. But i can also go to the store if i want a filet mignon.

whatever............you have your own opinion and i understand that.
