So sad! Military tickets unusable

Whoa! let's back up here. I was born and raised in Alaska. #1 bears do not outnumber people. I have only seen a bear in the wild once since living here. My family spends all summer out in the wilderness, and you don't see bear very often. #2 i have never paid $8 for milk. You can get a gallon of milk for $2.99. And lettuce in the summer is 99 cents a head. And the places that do pay $10 for a six pack of coke or $8 for a loaf of bread would not be places the military would normally be stationed.

We have a very modern city and everything everybody else has. We don't live in igloo's and mush dog sleds to work. My husband does hunt and fish, and we do eat the meat. But i can also go to the store if i want a filet mignon.

Ha, Google is my friend and bears sure do outnumber humans in Kodiak, which is where most CG personnel are stationed and where some of my best girlfriends live. They get very high COLA because of the $8 dollar milk and LOTS of bears even in their housing area. Alaska is a beautiful state, I would LOVE to visit there, but I prefer the boring suburbs of Florida. I didn't say you lived in an igloo or mush dogs or see Russia from your house ;), don't jump to dramatic conclusions.

COLA fluctuates depending on the area. An E-7 with 18 years in with 3 dependents gets $555 a month COLA. In Anchorage, they get about $400. That's on the high end since that is senior enlisted. Junior enlisted get much less.

Just as you don't like people making assumptions about your state, we don't like assumptions being made about military personnel and their families.

Ok, i didn't realize you were only speaking about Kodiak. And the bear/human ratio is probably true because Kodiak is a small island.

I honestly wouldn't see milk being $8 a gallon in Kodiak, but if you know people there who say it's so, than it's true i suppose.

In Anchorage I'm not sure what the cost of groceries is on Elmendorf or Ft. Richardson compared to prices in town. Groceries are exspensive no matter where you are I suppose. Cool, guess we should put our boxing gloves away.;)

I respectfully disagree with this. While I am all for the idea of allowing discounts (even substantial discounts) for basic daily services such as food, shelter, and even education, I do not think that we should be passing out free high dollar vacations.

While I put on my flame suit, let me also say that I AM incredibly grateful for the service that each member of our armed forces provides.

To the OP, I know that it must be very frustrating to find out that there are blackout dates! So sorry that happend!

Passing out free high dollar vacations??? seriously? I think that would be a stretch but maybe offering a discount is one very very small way to give back to the men and women in uniform and their families for the freedoms that you and I have that they fight very hard to give us...If it were up to me, and of course its not, all military personel SHOULD be given an free high dollar vacation, after all they just spent years making sure that you are free to go anywhere you want....just a thought?!?!?

Maybe they shouldn't offer it if people are going to be ungrateful for the fact that they offer it at all. Sorry you have to pay what the rest of us would.:confused3

I appreciate the sacrifices our military make for us as well. I just feel people suffer from "entitlement" syndrome. It is what it is, and be thankful they do anything at all.

I'm not a "hater". I just have a different view on it.

I also realize Military does not pay for housing or medical and many other things I pay for as a civilian. By the statement "Military does not make alot" is being pretty general. I know for a fact I have a MP living in my neighborhood who makes me look like i'm living in squalor. These are the same people who had a party with their military friends who offered my 12 year old daughter alcohol as she was walking home from a friends house. And yes, i called the police. So, quit putting every enlisted person on a pedestal.

So do Doctors deserve a discount? How about Fireman? No, because they make "too much" money. But they still provide a service that all of us can say we have benefited from, and in some cases have saved our lives.

I really tried to avoid this thread once it started going off from the original topic (a person venting about the fine print and nothing else). But in the end I have to get my opinion out there. So here goes...

I'm AD USAF and am grateful to DL for the discounted tickets because without them my family (5 all together) wouldn't be able to go this year.

Your posts about military seem (to me) that you have a chip on your shoulder based on your limited experiences with military.

Also I love how people (in general) make assumptions on others without knowing the full story. The person above that made you feel like you were living in squalor may be a higher ranking individual (Senior NCO or Commissioned Officer) not to mention maybe their spouse works as well. On the other hand if the individual was single, did they have roommates (thus creating extra spending money), did the individual/family believe in living debt free so they are able to save/spend accordingly.

Bottomline to me is don't pass judgement on things you only are experiencing as an observer and from a distance at that.

Don't paint with a broad brush. I know a retired major who if was still on active duty would be working real hard to get those types out of the service. They give a bad name and are not wanted.

Firemen, doctors and soldiers. Let's not compare apples and oranges. Are you willing to take a bullet for what the military pays you?

Honestly what is people's problem. For starters this is a disney board and what I like about disney is it's a place where people can be happy. A fun place to take your family and enjoy the magic. WHY are we bashing the military at all? Why would you bash anyone at all period. You should see why it would suck for anyone to budget a vacation and then realize they have to pay more? Some people are defying the money gods trying to get out there. Everyone deserves a vacation and that's that. So if a discounted ticket doesn't work out for someone the correct response is... oh man that sucks. Not damn those boozer, womanizing, no good military guys. I mean Darn those handicap parking spaces... I mean if you got a wheelchair why should you be in the front row anyway. Darn those firemen and cops I mean... they already get all the ladies. PEOPLE be happy for people and wish the best for them not come from a jealous/selfish place full of negativity and bad feelings. Promote your fellow man in all their endeavors. Oh and btw I'm military currently in iraq.

Thank you for your service to our country. Many people do not understand the hardship the military imposes on your body and your mind and your families. The day to fear that comes from being OS. All I can say on this subjectto those who never have is try it and then give me your opinion.

Wow I don't normally say things to rude remarks, but that was very uncalled for.

Does this mean people who can't get free dining plan at DW suffer from the same thing?

I hate to see threads on these boards turn ugly, so I didn't want to chime in, but I did actually want to agree with you about the stuff above. My husband is in the military. He has been in for 9 years now and will probably stay in for the next 11 (by choice) because of the lifestyle it affords us. You're right, we get extra money to pay for housing that doesn't come out of his paycheck, and we get great health insurance. Yes, his job causes us to be separated for months and months out of the year, but I wonder if most people that aren't in the military know that while deployed, a military member makes a lot more money than when they are in the states due to things like hazard pay and extra allowances. Plus the money earned while overseas is tax free! For most years, only 25% of my husband's entire income has been taxable...that's a big chunk of change that goes into his pocket. So yes, while deployments are dangerous, these men and women and their families are compensated for that danger.

I always appreciate when somewhere offers a military discount, but I would never say that we deserve one, because we have a successful and secure life because of his military career. In fact, if you were to see my husband in his uniform and go up to thank him, he'd shrug it off and blush from embarrassment because he doesn't see what he does as a huge sacrifice - he sees it as a job, just like any other. Just like you mentioned, there are doctors, policeman, and firefighters out there that save lives every day and often can't see their families very often either because of demanding schedules. I think they should be just as "entitled" to discounts, if not more so!

Just my two cents :)

Well put!

All military do not make the same. When you live off post you get a set amount for rent. Those of us that live on post who have children and may not be of a high rank may not have extra money to do as the MP does.

You can't group us all together because of the 1 person on your block.

And i do know for a fact that military was getting over seas pay for being stationed in Alaska. I don't know if that still is true or not.

It's not overseas pay. It is called Cola. And it is for our regular pay will not cover the cost of living in some states.

chrissie lives in anchorage not kodiak. if you read before, she is of military family..

ok. i think that this thread has gotten off track.. chrissie was just speaking her opinion about the Op's problem, yeah maybe her comments have rubbed some of you the wrong way, but again just see her speaking her opinion, nothing wrong with that... anyhow i see this thread taking the wrong turn and i am suggesting that it be closed, i don't see how we can really get back on topic after what was said,as anyone who does read this thread wil read through the post's and qoute and comment back and i just see it as building the fire bigger...just my opinion!

Back to the topic....is there any chance you can pay a blockout fee. Kind of like with AP on blockout days I believe you pay $40. That wouldn't be as bad as paying full price. Hope it all works out for you and your family.:wizard:

Okay, I think it might be time to close this thread up. Once a thread takes a turn, it's hard to get it back on course.:goodvibes I don't think there is much point in keeping it open right now.
