I feel like WDW is my second home and I know it like the back of my hand, but we are thinking about visiting Universal for the first time this summer. Where is the best place (online) to learn the basics? What do you recommend for a first timer?

Hi! On the DISboard of course & Universals website. My advice is if you can stay at one of the onsite resorts do so/ FOTL/great location &service. IMHO :thumbsup2:cool1::cool1::cool1:

To me the Universal side of the Disboards is better than any book or the actual website, however, be sure and check them out as well. There is also a great book written by one of our members, I have it, just can't remember the name and am too cozy to get up and look for it. Don't worry, someone else will know lol. Feel free to ask ANY questions on here and make sure you read the stickies!

Universal definitely does not require the planning that Disney does. If you stay on-site you will have unlimited Express Pass (also called FOTL here) which makes everything extremely easy to see. Rumor has it that the Harry Potter rides will have only 1 express pass entrance per ride per day. If you stay on-site your room key will also get you priority seating at the restaurants at City Walk (Emerils is not included - may be a few others). You show your room key and you will get a table quickly. If you are a AAA member, your AAA card will get you a 10% discount at most restaurants in the parks and at City Walk. We usually start our vacation at Universal and love how relaxing it can be. Once you have the unlimited express pass you will really miss it while waiting in lines at Disney.

This is an extremely budget trip so we will not be staying onsite for either resort. I have played around with the universal website, but I would love to have some maps from the parks. I am definately a visual person. I will have to see if some of my Orlando friends can mail some to me. I will definately check out the stickies. I haven't looked there yet.

WoW! After Disney, Universal should be a breeze! :goodvibes Lots of great info here of course. Just start asking questions and most likely someone here will have some info. I know what you mean about being a visual person & sometimes I like to see/hold a book too, as well as online stuff. I have a Universal Orlando book/guide by Kelly Monaghan & it's been a good general reference. (It even gives kudos to the DISboards "DIS" and encourages readers to check-it-out) :thumbsup2

It's hard to beat the "been-there-done-that" crowd here at the DIS though. The closest I came to finding a map online was the one I posted on another thread, but it gives you a general idea of the parks.

Not sure when you're going, but the "stay-more-play-more" really makes staying onsite pretty affordable IMO. I don't know what off-site rates are, but there is HUGE worth to me, in walking to the parks plus the Express Pass for onsite guest. (and all the other perks too).

Good luck & for me the research is a lot of the fun of taking/planning vacations!!!

Is Universal (either park) divided into lands like WDW?

Islands of Adventure is made up of themed lands. There are also areas at the Studios but not as defined as Disney...remember...Universal is a working studio so it's not really divided like a theme park.

We leave for WDW in 3 weeks and are thinking of spending a day at Universal Parks also. It looks like an awesome place.

Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming! Here are a few more questions to get me started:

1. Which park would you go to first?
2. Where do you head first when you enter either park? What are the rides that you have to do first to avoid waits?
3. How many days would we want in each park to feel like we did everything?
4. We will have enough to do if we skip some of the larger roller coasters?

1-Whichever one you want! If you plan on spending one day per park, it won't matter. They're both fun.

2-At IOA, most people head left, since they're enticed by the Hulk & Spider-Man. Head to the right and you can do more attractions with less waiting.
At USF, most people head straight up the main path, enticed by Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Shrek, and Jimmy Neutron. Head right and you can get a jump on the Simpsons Ride, MiB, and possibly Jaws.

3-At least one day per park.

4-Yes. You're only skipping 3/4 rides if you skip the coasters. The only "big" coasters are Hulk, Dueling Dragons (Dragon Challenge), and Hollywood Rockit. ROTM is a coaster, but not that intense.

I would pst more, but the great Universal Homies beat me too it! Universal is awesome and you will enjoy (there's a reason I've gone here twice in a row. Though the Mouse is calling me back this year)! Its so much more laid back than Disney, you don't even need to make reservations to eat anywhere! Though, you can if you're incredibly OCD (like me, but I only make ressies for the Emeril's restaurants...of which I've only eaten at Tchoup Chop so far, but I digress). Universal's website used to have a interactive map for both parks on it, maybe it still does.

You can also download the pdf parks maps at universalorlando.com :thumbsup2

There is a great book out there too -

Universal Orlando 2010 by Kelly Monaghan

Pictures, maps, ride discriptions, tips, it is all there!

I'm in the same boat as you. (Tons of visits to Sea World and Disney parks), but just one visit to US and that was in 1995 and I've never been to IOA. I wanted some detailed descriptions of al the rides, etc. and picked up the book, "Beyond Disney -- The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando, Sea World, and the Best of Central Florida". Haven't been yet, but thought I'd mention the book just in case you are interested.
